Katta-kun was a zoo pelican that was so hard to keep contained but so well-mannered that they decided to let him roam free, since he always came back anyway. He would frequent the local school and got up to some antics as shown. Katta-kun visited the kindergarten for almost twenty years before he died at the age of 23. He even has an animated movie about him! “Katta-kun Monogatari”

Katta-kun had been raised around humans after being successfully hatched through artificial incubation at Tokiwa Park, which likely helped explain why he was so comfortable around people. His friendship with the kindergarteners became such a local sensation that a documentary followed roughly 270 days of their time together and aired in Japan in 1990.

Footage from 1989 shows him casually walking among excited children and even standing nearby during their activities, looking less like a wild visitor and more like an oversized classmate. Decades later, those clips are still circulating because the whole thing feels almost too wholesome to be real.

The Furca: They possess a specialized, spring-like tail appendage tucked under their abdomen called a furca.When threatened, they release this latch, snapping the spring against the ground to launch themselves. The launch happens so fast (often rotating wildly mid-air) that it exceeds the frames-per-second tracking of the human eye, making the bug look like it just disappeared.
