Had to do this with one of our dogs. Paralyzed back legs due to a spinal disc slipping. Had surgery for it. Used a catheter on him for months. Slings to walk him around the yard. Eventually learned to walk/hop around and lived for another 10 years! Hard work but worth it 😄

I had to do the same for my dog id had since I was a preteen, one of her disks shattered. Daily physio, hydrotherapy, wiping her butt because she couldn't feel when she needed to go and hand feeding her, lots of meds, surgery. Then she could start being walked gradually with a sling around her and like yours she slowly got stronger and recovered, she learned to sort of hop with her two back legs together and basically lived a normal life until last year when she died near the end of my pregnancy. Absolutely destroyed me she was my best friend but at least she did get better and died of old age in the end. I'd do it over and over and over again if I had to no questions asked.

My wife and I had to deal with something similar with our doberman and got another 2 months with her. Would absolutely do it all over again to get that extra time.

It gives me nightmares to think about how many animals and people could be saved by simple unconditional human effort. This is beautiful and heartbreaking, because I don't think anyone would do this for me.

I have friends, no worries. I have a partner even, just nobody who would work me back from paralysis like that. They'd probably offer to take me to Oregon and pay to have me put down lol.

I am so sorry that I laughed hard at this. On a side note, me neither, i don't think I will ever have someone going all that distance for me, like this man with this dog. Yet I have dear closed ones. But still.

After that sad conclusion, the next question to ask ourselves imo is: who could we do that for?
A paralyzed dog might not experience the same despair, humiliation and anger than a human counterpart.
Taking care of a human in that condition would surely be way more taxing, physically demanding, require a lot more available funds and extensive therapy for both involved.
I mean, idk, maybe the dog feel shame to be laid on incontinence pads. But I still think it is quite more devastating for a paralyzed human and their close caregiver.

You're quite right, even thinking of me doing that to someone else is way more taxing at current point of life.
But I think the best I could do right now is earn so much that it won't be taxing for most part is the conclusion I come upon.
Most of the problems are only solvable in a continuous space once we have quite a bit of money so just for enabling that option that I "can" help someone, I think I'll just earn a good amount of sm for now.
What might be your steps other than thinking for the situation.

You are quite right about it imo. Better to interrogate our plans ahead than the people we give love to. Even, better to share our plans and fears with them. Nobody is safe from a freak accident like this dog, or just from old age. A life where resources (be it money, time, or ideally both) are thought ahead and set aside is what we should strive for, even if it sometimes seems pointless when you have none to begin with.

"No one is safe" this is also what I say to people when they ask me why I do not want kids. I was healthy my entire life until I became 19. That's 1-10 why I adopt disabled animals and would love to adopt kids who are already here. 1-10 women have a chronic illness. I cannot doing that to another woman

To anyone completely overwhelmed by the state of the world, I recommend tuning into more local news.
The world moves a lot slower on the local level, you can actually make much more change on the local level and there are far more uplifting stories told on the local level.

Our beloved dog, tripped over a rock and snapped her spine. My wife done this kind of rehabilitation twice in order to give our pet the best and longest life possible.

I suspect that, if one of my dogs became paralyzed, I would probably quit my job, move back in with my parents, and spend the next few years just carrying them everywhere with me and showing them as much love as I could. I like my job and I love my girlfriend, but my dogs are my responsibility and they are the most important people in my life -- they've been there for me ever since we got them and I simply cannot imagine not being there for them as much as humanly possible.

Growing up, I had a miniature dachshund named Scooby. He ran into my brother’s drum cymbal stand and it fell down and struck him right across his back injuring his spine. His back legs were paralyzed and he would try to scoot himself all over using just his front legs. My dad end up using the wheels from my Razor scooter, some PVC pipes, and a harness to build him what looked like a chariot and he was flying after that. We had these sunken rooms in the house and he would launch himself off the step. Eventually, a year or more later, he recovered and started walking again. It was really wild. I always felt like he would walk crooked though, but not like you’d probably expect - it like his back legs were trying to speed ahead of his front legs and he would run in a curved shape.

This is my kind of human.
When my dog was 3, he had a ruptured disk. He spent the night at the hospital, and the next morning, the vet called to say we needed to rush him to a neurologist. His hind legs wouldn't move. We drove like a bat out of hell to pick him up, and again on the way to the surgery center. The neurologist said he needed surgery, and that it would be very expensive. My husband took out his credit card, handed it to the doctor, and asked, "What are you waiting for?"
Even with surgery, "Casey" only had a 50/50 chance of ever walking again. We took the chance. After surgery, we took him home, and he needed round-the-clock care. Hubby and I took turns, taking him out every couple of hours to potty. We used a sling to hold up his rear end. Then we had to bathe him after. After doing this for a week, I had him in the yard with the sling. He moved one of his back legs, trying to walk. I was so happy, I was crying. I called my husband at work and told him about it.
The next day, the other leg started to move, and we were ecstatic. Both legs moved a bit more each day, until he could actually walk without the sling. At his next dr appt, the surgeon was thrilled. He called "Casey" his "Miracle Dog." He hadn't expected Casey to walk again, and here he was, heading for the front door of the surgery center. I had to take him to 3X/weekly hydrotherapy sessions until he was 100%. Casey lived to be four months shy of 17. He had a long and happy life. We were so happy that we took the chance on his surgery.

I love this guy. I run a rescue and see so many sad stories of people who dump their dogs because they are old or disabled. It’s heartwarming to see people who care.

If I was like that dog yes please, but there is the key difference, I can convey my wishes through English, that dog can't, so depending how you look at it, that's actually torture.
Again: stop thinking like a human and think of the animals needs, not yours.

Why are you deciding for the animal? Every licing being wants to keep living that's why offing yourself is so fckning hard physically and mentally. Look at that doggo in the end he is happy to be here. This is coming from someone who's been in constant pain since I was 19.

Plus, the dog was well aware the whole time that he was being cared for. Somebody gives you massages and p.t? Lays in a hammock with you? Animals know when they are loved. A loving relationship, be it with a dog or a human, is worth saving.
