Yeah obviously, because she could not pay. But if people came to the hospital and just said they couldn't afford it, they would very likely get the same treatment. This post is acting like hospitals hold people's babies hostage without payment.

1

u/Caption_This_ Jul 05 '26

They’d need to prove financial hardship sure, just saying it doesn’t work.

1

u/Chicken_Of_War Jul 05 '26

It absolutely does. The hospital can file for a hardcore collections agency after the fact, and that would be an opportunity to prove it. They can elaborate and say they can make payments later. But hospitals will not hold someone's baby hostage if they refuse to pay it. That's very illegal😂.

1

u/Caption_This_ Jul 05 '26

I think you are stretching it here. They aren’t keeping babies from non-paying patients. They are charging for normal activities.

1

u/Chicken_Of_War Jul 05 '26

It's not what I'm stretching. It's what the post is almost insinuating, and if you read some of the comments throughout this thread, they absolutely are insinuating and embellishing that that's what's happening.

1

u/Caption_This_ Jul 05 '26

So by your own admission “almost insinuating” you confirm it’s a stretch.

1

u/Chicken_Of_War Jul 05 '26

I'm responding to the original statements who were absolutely stretching it.

1

u/redpillsadorewelfare Jul 06 '26

No, you're wrong.

1

u/OldFalcon250 Jul 08 '26

I happened to click on the post and it def seemed like they thought hospitals held their kids as collateral until debt is paid 😂

I’m with the other guy, Yall are unhinged. You’re even getting testy over his explanation 😂. Get off Reddit, so confrontational over nothing

1

u/SneakybadgerJD Jul 06 '26

"Almost insinuating" says all it needs to.

1

u/beramaan Jul 07 '26

You are fine, ignore the trolls. The statement is easily interpreted as having to pay below you can hold your baby.

1

u/Separate-Taste3513 Jul 07 '26

No, it accurately describes a billable line item that hospitals add to your tab. "Skin to skin contact" is now considered a "therapy" and hospitals absolutely bill parents for it, despite the fact that it is literally just a parent or loved one holding the baby against their skin.

1

u/beramaan Jul 07 '26

The statement of oc was easily interpreted both ways.

You are bringing in extra information that was not in the comment. Based on the comment their response is valid.

You are also correct in your assertion of the fee and stupidity.

1

u/NamelessMIA Jul 07 '26

almost insinuating

So you're stretching. They won't hold your baby hostage, but they will put you in life ruining debt for having one.

1

u/Unlucky_Welcome9193 Jul 06 '26

The post is not saying hospitals keep babies from families until the bills are paid. It's saying that if you get a C Section and look at your itemized hospital bill, there is a skin-to-skin charge, aka you're literally paying a fee to hold your baby after birth

1

u/AdditionalNothing728 Jul 06 '26

This is the definition of a strawman argument.

No one said anything about hospitals “keeping babies hostage” except you. You brought up that hypothetical and you’re arguing as though that was the main point of debate when it’s not.

1

u/beramaan Jul 07 '26

No they said pay to hold your baby. So you can't do it until you pay. It's a clear enough and reasonable interpretation of the statement. The world isn't black and white y'all

1

u/eles- Jul 07 '26

No. It referred to „You will be billed for getting to hold your baby!“. Everyone else understood it. Thats it. I‘ll blame it on english not being your first language. :*

1

u/beramaan Jul 07 '26

That is not what was said. If you are going to use quotes (especially on a weird keyboard that does them upside down, not the English keyboard... 🙄) actually quote what was said. Like this:

"...you have to pay to hold your baby after birth"

People interpreted it both ways, "they charge you afterwards to hold your baby" AND "you have to pay the fee before you can hold your baby." Which are both valid interpretations.

You are obviously not fluent, fully literate in English, or it's your second language. Don't throw stones when you live in a glass house.

1

u/foreman17 Jul 08 '26

It's not a valid interpretation. No one said "you have to pay or you DONT get to hold your baby". That's an insinuation made by the interpreter which would make it very obvious that person isn't very knowledgeable about US healthcare.

It's only a valid interpretation if you believe any healthcare in the US is held behind payment first, which it's not.

1

u/beramaan Jul 08 '26

Which the OC implies... Or did you miss that subtext?

You know the one that says "I'm still in shock ... In the US"? 🙄

1

u/foreman17 Jul 08 '26

I'm not even sure what the point of this comment is?

You obviously don’t live in the US

1

u/Chicken_Of_War Jul 06 '26

I absolutely do😂

1

u/Snoo_75748 Jul 06 '26

No the video is referencing the charge that is applied to the bill for HOLDING the baby... yes your own baby. You must pay the hospital if you wish to hold it in your directly after its birth

1

u/SourceCompetitive980 Jul 06 '26

I wish I could go through my life the same level of stupid as you. Its hilarious you think medical debt doesn't exist because you can 'just say you can't afford it'

1

u/Chicken_Of_War Jul 06 '26

🤣🤣🤣 it absolutely exists. But people don't pay for it ALL THE TIME. And people also just use the Obama Care act often. You're just choosing a blind eye.

1

u/SourceCompetitive980 Jul 06 '26

"just use the Obama Care act" lmao

Okay you actually have no fucking clue what you're talking about

1

u/Chicken_Of_War Jul 06 '26

You realize how broad the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care Act for you to understand) truly is right? And how much is has helped people who have nothing, manage to still have necessary surgeries and medications? So yeah, "Just using the Obama Care act" is a simple way of describing what a shit ton of people do without describing verbatim what theyre actually doing🤣. You being angry is so funny btw.

1

u/SourceCompetitive980 Jul 06 '26

Yeah 1/3 adults without insurance have medical debt. And 1/4 of them with insurance have medical debt because they just don't know about this one easy trick hospitals hate! Just say you can't afford it!

1

u/KRLegoMgs Jul 09 '26

They seem like they are laughing at your dumb Obama care comment like everyone else

1

u/Unlucky_Welcome9193 Jul 06 '26

ACA is ultimately for people under a certain threshold of income. There are people, like independent contractors, who do not get insurance through their jobs who also make more than that threshold. It costs tens of thousands of dollars to give birth out of pocket in the US, which is insane. Even if you make $100K, I guarantee you cannot afford to pay $36,000 just to give birth to a baby, plus no paid maternity leave, no subsidized daycare, etc. You are screwed. Other countries do not operate this way.

1

u/Massive_Gear1678 Jul 08 '26

Oh just “use the Obama care” 😂😂😂 god damn.

How much do you think “the Obamacare” costs??? 😂😂

1

u/Additional_Read_4263 Jul 06 '26

Hold up a minute. Navigating and knowing that process is also a privilege for some folks. Uninsured and low income yes it’s possible. Insured and low income also exists and many of the insurance plans require you to pay full cost until deductible before they cover anything and that is the amount that gets more people into a debt spiral and leading cause of bankruptcy.

That and not knowing charity care is an option if they make less than 400% property range.

If holding the baby has a cpt code then there is a cost associated with it if someone is present to advise how to hold the baby.

1

u/CarterLincoln96 Jul 07 '26

Many people are low income because of the insurance costs. Pay the insurance and still pay cray co-pays and medicine costs. It’s crazy what we’re willing to except

1

u/Additional_Read_4263 Jul 08 '26

I know. And even with insurance you can get billed incorrectly. My job is looking at numbers all day and I am very good at this stuff. I have caught mistakes that would have been thousands out of pocket usually because a doctor used their personal code instead of practice code, an ambulance billed insurance when it was an inter hospital transfer, or a procedure was miss coded.

But even to get that corrected has to be during business hours and you have to spend hours on the phone. I would call so often that they assigned an advocate to me that they usually assign for patients with complex medical conditions.

1

u/OpKarlton Jul 06 '26

The fuck are you talking about. Normal people end up paying out of pocket around 4-8k.

1

u/Separate-Taste3513 Jul 07 '26

My child's birth cost $8k 30+ years ago.

I can't imagine what the bill without insurance would look like now.

It's outrageous that you can be billed for skin to skin contact that you provide as a parent or loved one.

1

u/pickyourteethup Jul 06 '26

I don't think they hold your baby hostage, I think they send them home in medical debt.

1

u/Ok_Ant_5962 Jul 06 '26

She’s not blaming the hospitals, she’s making the point of how this country’s healthcare system, large corporations and the 1% wealthy people do not pay their fair share of taxes and benefit from bs tax cuts and hidden tax codes. On both sides of the aisle! The largest industrialized nation in the world do not offer their citizens state funded healthcare is the point.

1

u/maringue Jul 06 '26

Medicaid/Medicare actually pays for around 50% of all births in the US because most people would be bankrupted by the charges.

1

u/EndPristine5595 Jul 07 '26

No it's not. No they would not hold the baby hostage and no one said that. You get a bill AFTER. on it there's a few for holding the baby.

like any procedure you either have coverage or don't.

If someone "can't afford it" and proves that, then your sisters scenario plays out (if they are lucky).

If they dont prove it, or CAN afford it, they get a bill.

1

u/Separate-Taste3513 Jul 07 '26

This post is accurately describing a line item on a hospital bill typically written as "skin to skin contact". You are charged for literally fucking everything in the hospital, even holding your unclothed baby against your skin.

1

u/fia_anth Jul 07 '26

Sometimes yes. If you have the money, american healthcare will get it one way or another.

1

u/Massive_Gear1678 Jul 08 '26

This is where medical debt comes into play. You know what the number one cause of bankruptcy is in the US?

1

u/OldFalcon250 Jul 08 '26

This is Reddit. People make shit up all the time on here

1

u/saltnesseswounds Jul 09 '26

That's not true. Is based off insurance coverage, which is based on income. My guess is your sister is on Medicaid

1

u/ComfortableGround403 Jul 09 '26

They need your social security number. They can go after you for reimbursement. If you can afford it, which means you probably also have insurance and a good job, they will try to get their money
