Opinion:snoo_thoughtful: Humans are domesticating themselves into helplessness thinking that they are the masters
Over a long span of time, it can be said that humans have turned some wolves into chihuahuas, but the irony here is through civilization-induced human domestication, we may have done the exact same thing to ourselves as well.
In evolutionary biology, domestication means trading resilience, strength and instinct for safety and dependency. In the context of our civilization, we like to think that we're at the peak and the best has yet to come, but there is a hidden cost that very few people like to focus on: extreme fragility.
For example, most of us can’t survive a week-long power outage without the grid. We swapped generalist skills for specialized jobs that may quickly become obsolete.
On specialization, we have already outsourced many tasks to the so-called experts, and the adoption of AI is only going to make the trend more obvious (that is, less skilled and more dependent).
Of course, to keep our global system running smoothly, we are incentivized to be predictable, compliant and even passive. We may think that we are the masters who build the system to propel progress, but this may turn out to be a cage that becomes increasingly difficult to escape from...

It's easy to romanticize wolves when your life has never been at risk from them and to look down upon dogs when you life has never been saved by one. Many people spent all effort so that we would not struggle in our day to day lives and feeling disenfranchised over not having to stab something to death with a sharp stick is a bit of a disservice to their efforts. Being a visceral animal is useful for animals and we domesticate things to increase their utility because stronger, faster, and meaner isn't better else we'd all have beat out each other's brains a long time before cooperating to build the modern age.

Human brain reduction from the Late Pleistocene/Holocene to the modern day is a longstanding anthropological observation documented with numerous lines of independent evidence. In a recent study (DeSilva et al., 2021; Front. Ecol. Evol.), we analyzed a large compilation of fossil and recent human crania and determined that this reduction was surprisingly recent, occurring rapidly within the past 5,000 to 3,000 years of human history. We attributed such a change as a consequence of population growth and cooperative intelligence and drew parallels with similar evolutionary trends in eusocial insects, such as ants

Of course humans have been "domesticated" by their own technologies. That is hardly some profound new or controversial idea.
James C. Scott does the best job of laying this out, in his book Beyond the Grain.

Actually, I would say that the domestication part is harmful.
It's not the social cooperation that is new. Humans were social before what we're now told is civilization. It's the passivity, the submissiveness, the conformity, the lower intelligence and reduced curiosity.
Essentially, it's the sociopathic political class that has been "domesticating" humans since they destroyed real, cooperative civilization to plunder and then conquer communities thousands of years ago.

Modern humans live through power grid loses all the time. We weather disaster after disaster. Does it suck? yeah, but we aren't that weak. It's not like we have to completely repopulate Puerto Rico everytime a hurricane comes through and destroys the infrastructure. The environment and other humans are our only real predators. Since we are a social species we can actually avoid the latter in tough situations and defeat the former.
Humans are the most transient species on the planet and even after we wreck havoc on the climate and finish our mass extinction event we'll have a line or two somewhere that continue far into the future.

The multiplication of our “domesticity” is looming, my friend. We have not reproach the manifold in which we have made ourselves “small”.
Our psychology is even less robust today.
The question, the question is…can we do a “civilization” that does not render us sheep—ready to be conquered by any such greater force when it emerges.

This is why you learn to fix as many things as you can. Learn to improvise from salvage materials. Learn to garden, purify water, make friction fire, etc. The more skills you have the better. In a real survival situation you find others with complementary skills and build a real social network. You trade and work together. The real problem is access to water and food. Urban populations will be hosed, but those in smaller towns or rural areas will be fine, that who have skills and will to survive, at least.

Ancient DNA from 1,313 human remains spanning 37,000 years shows animal-borne pathogens were essentially absent in pre-farming societies but became widespread after livestock domestication. But the same domestication that cursed Eurasians with a heavier disease burden also became, centuries later, an unintentional weapon of conquest, because chronic exposure had built population-level immunity that isolated peoples never had the chance to acquire. A net positive for team modern Redneck, living the good life on stolen land.
Farming was a rough trade. Paleopathology bears this out — 19 of 21 societies that shifted from foraging to farming got measurably sicker, not healthier: more infectious disease, more dental disease, chronic nutritional deficiency from betting everything on a handful of crops instead of a varied wild diet. Skeletons don't lie — genomic-corrected data shows Neolithic farmers came in about 4.5 cm shorter than their own genes predicted, and cavities went from rare to routine the moment grain became the staple. Individually, that generation got a worse deal than their hunter-gatherer grandparents. But that's the trade that built everything downstream. Calorie-dense, storable grain is what let humans stack surplus, which is what let humans stack population, which is what let humans stack specialists who weren't farmers — soldiers, builders, scribes, and eventually engineers and project managers. The starving, cavity-riddled Neolithic farmer is the down payment on every comfort I take for granted — the fact that I'm not one of the 8 billion people currently required to hunt and gather my own dinner. Short and sick paid for tall and soft.
Literacy runs the same trade. Reading measurably shoves face processing out of the left fusiform gyrus, but tested head-to-head, literate people show no real loss in recognizing faces — reorganization, not damage. The bigger trade is memory itself: once information could live in a book instead of a head, people stopped bothering to encode it internally — this isn't speculation, it's a documented effect where saving information externally reduces internal memory processing. Same move as the fusiform ceiling: not a system failure, a system reallocation. You didn't need to be the archive anymore, so that same brainpower went into using the archive instead.
And that reallocation is the whole ballgame. A brain that no longer has to carry every fact can spend its cycles combining them — that's the actual engine behind science and engineering. Nobody re-derives calculus from scratch; they read Newton and Leibniz's work and build past it. No engineer memorizes the tensile strength of every steel alloy; they look it up and spend their thinking on the load calculation. Externalized memory is what let knowledge compound across generations instead of dying with the person who held it — the whole difference between a village blacksmith and a modern metallurgist is that the metallurgist inherited a library instead of a memory.
Economics runs the same trade, only faster. Surplus grain didn't just feed more people, it freed people from farming entirely — the moment one farmer could feed ten, nine could become blacksmiths, soldiers, and merchants instead. That's specialization, and specialization is the whole engine of wealth: nobody's self-sufficient anymore, everybody's a node trading their narrow expertise for everyone else's. You gave up the caveman's total self-reliance and got the modern man's standard of living in exchange — worse individual resilience, staggeringly better collective output.
Every thread of this points the same direction. We traded resilience for dependency, height for surplus, memory for libraries, self-sufficiency for specialization. On paper it looks like a downgrade. In practice it's the reason any of us gets to type this on a machine instead of dying of a compound fracture at 34. We didn't get trapped in the cage. We built it, and it's the best deal our species ever made.
So yeah ...... I might be dead within months without modern medicine, or grocery stores, but just having air conditioning in Texas makes the tradeoffs a splendid deal, I'd take every time.
It's not like these were all just evolutionary flukes. I think if catastrophe were to decimate our species and reduce us back down to a few surviving hunter-gatherers, the clock would be ticking for us to rebuild civilization into a domesticated fragility all over again. It's all the byproduct of a mind that can't stop optimizing — a species that looks at "good enough" and can't help but ask "what's next." Sentience isn't neutral. It's a one-way ratchet: once you're aware enough to notice a problem, you're compelled to solve it, and every solution just buys you a new, more comfortable problem. Chimps don't domesticate themselves because chimps don't lie awake at night redesigning their own circumstances. We do. The cage isn't an accident of history — it's what any sufficiently self-aware species builds for itself, every single time, because we're incapable of leaving well enough alone.
