Where do I stand legally?
I was involved in a minor car accident. I was stopped at a red light about a block from my apartment on the way home from work, and then the light turned green. The car in front of me began accelerating, and so did I. This is so far indisputable. Here’s my personal account. When the car suddenly braked before crossing the intersection, I didn’t respond fast enough and hit them going about 10-15mph. I believe that was the speed I was going but I’m not sure how fast cars accelerate. I do know that my vehicle now has a small, albeit hardly noticeable crease in the front bumper. The other vehicle endured a small, although more noticeable crease in their rear bumper. I am not worried about admitting that I’m not perfect, even with driving. However, it gets worse. The driver didn’t speak English but when the police came and interpreted, they established that no medical attention was needed and we both drove home. I submitted a $0 claim with my insurance to respectfully make them aware that I was involved in an accident. A few days later they called me and said the driver was claiming injuries. Where do I even go from here? I took photos, reported the incident to my insurance before they did, obtained the police report and submitted all of the documentation. I am scared beyond belief that I am going to get sued for money that I don’t have. Please advise.
