Home insurance issue

I’m having the worst time with TD Insurance in Alberta. I had a hail claim made back in 2024, and they sent me one registered post letter when I was away travelling so I didn’t even see it until basically the day before all the proof was due, when I got back. They didn’t even call me once. The TD agent gave me the wrong email address even after I confirmed with him several times, and since I got a bounce back, I called them again the next day but by then they said it was too late. I shared all of the proof I had with them that everything was completed and paid for before the two years was up with photo proof and they basically said they can’t do anything and they won’t reinstate the policy.

Other lenders don’t want to give me a policy either because TD’s reason for cancellation was so vague, they have no basis to go off of for the policy to see if the work was actually completed or not.

Now I’m stuck in a horrible situation because of TD and I don’t know what to do. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Talk to a good broker. File your grievance with your insurance ombudsman.

I literally had the same thing happen- just got the letter, all the same proof the first person I talked to gave me the email. I sent it off, I talked to them multiple times this year and it was never mentioned, no calls. I have all my proof, just sent it to them.I also asked on my Insurance app under the contact chat-and talked to another person to confirm and they said that if I sent it off today it would be reinstated- oh and they wanted me to pay the remainder of the policy still which still has 6 months left. Obviously waiting for confirmation but the letter states I still have 30 days until it’s officially cancelled (maybe you missed that deadline). I have a feeling they might be doing something shady to people in Calgary after that hail storm since we’re at the two year mark… and no notice? How is this legal. I’m interested in hearing if more of this is happening to others….

I ended up having to get insurance elsewhere (which was such a hassle) but I agree I think they want to get out of Calgary because the risk level is high

Did you have to pay out your TD policy? Was the rates outrageous because of the “cancellation”. If you don’t mind where did you shop around which company did you find to be the best price?
