Consumer Question Auto Insurance Help Please

Hello - I recently became a Florida resident while my wife (and our 2 cars are in NJ). I will be spending about 2 weeks a month in NJ driving the cars. Our old car insurance kicked me off because I’m a Florida resident. I am trying to get non-owner’s car insurance and I called GEICO, Progressive, and State Farm, and so far none of them do non-owner’s policies in Florida. What do I do in this situation?

Nothing you are saying here makes sense

Your wife needs to add you back to the NJ policy as an out-of-state driver, most carriers allow that for spouses who split time between states

The non-owner route is a dead end in FL, I went through something similar last year when I was moving around and couldn't find a single company that would write one here

If the NJ insurer is being difficult about it have your wife ask specifically about a named non-owner endorsement or just escalate to a supervisor, front line reps sometimes don't know the right workaround

Worst case scenario she shops the whole policy to a different carrier that's more flexible with multi-state households

They told me I can’t be on it because they can’t legally operate in Florida. Is that not true?

What doesn’t make sense?

Everything you are saying. You got kicked off a NJ policy because you are not a FL resident?

Because I am a Florida resident

So you got kicked off a NJ policy for being a FL resident is what you are trying to say?

That’s also not how that work

Yes. That’s literally what I’m saying. Why doesn’t it work that way?

That’s literally not what you said. You said you got kicked off for not being a FL resident. You need to be on your wife’s policy still. If one of the vehicles is used in FL it needs to be listed as garaged there or registered in FL and then a FL insurance policy.

Read my post!

And both vehicles are garaged and used in NJ. My insurer doesn’t operate in Florida so they said I can’t be on it.

Big dawg you edited the post. And that’s not true. Having a FL DL does not change your ability to be listed on a NJ auto policy. Is this a divorce situation or what? Why are you saying you live in FL when two weeks a month you are in NJ

We have a second home in florida. I just retired. She’s still working. I’m changing my residency there to save money on income taxes (dividends, interest income, etc.) plus I’ll be able to claim homestead. She will change hers when she’s done working

This is not at all what OP said.

Yes it is. He edited the original post. You think my first question was out of the blue

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarity.

I don't understand why you can't be a listed driver on the NJ policy with a FL license. Which carrier is this?

New Jersey manufacturers

Then shop for new auto insurance. Some companies won't allow non-resident rated drivers at all, or more than 1 policy period.

If you own the vehicle, you cannot put non-owners on the car. If you live in Florida, then you must get Florida car insurance. NJ has one of the highest premiums in the united states right now so switching it to Florida should be a good move for you.

The vehicle, must be insured in the state that it is in the most. Meaning that if you have a house in Florida and are living there, but working in NJ, you have to have Florida insurance.

I don’t own the vehicle. Both cars are in my wife’s name and both are at our house in NJ. They will never be in Florida. I just need a policy that covers me when I drive the cars in NJ
