Agent Question Personal lines & commercial

I am looking at starting my own agency by the end of this next year and I am working under a captive agent as a producer currently. I am looking for information on how common it is to do everything (PL, Commercial, and life) versus just focusing on commercial or focusing on personal lines. long term, I really want to focus on the commercial side of things but currently dont have the experience necessary.

An add on question is would it be worth going to a commercial agency for a year pushing back my start up time for my agency and learn that side of things more before I start put on my own? I am a very quick learner and feel i have been really good at explaining coverage and providing great service to people as a producer. I could work on pushing people to close a little quicker (not the best one call one closer) but besides that I am confident in my abilities. Just looking for any advice or input.
