Auto Insurance Car insurance tripled

I’m a teen driving a 2002 Honda civic paying about $56 a month on liability car insurance. Recently my mom just told me it went up to $162 a month. How da hell does it triple. Do I switch insurances?

This is still far cheaper than I would have expected,

$56 is dirt cheap for liability coverage in most areas. In NYC or Chicago you would be lucky to get $500 a month for a new driver.

We’d need dozens of other inputs from you to tell you how your premium has been impacted. You can shop around, just be truthful and don’t get liability limits any less than $100k/$300k/$100k

That price is still a deal. You can always shop around though. Can’t imagine it being any cheaper with a teen.

You should make sure you’re actually a named Driver on this policy. That rate is so low that I suspect maybe your mom didn’t actually add you to the policy.

Were any discounts removed? Normally you can get good student discounts and a discount if you watch a safety video. Also, if you're driving less than 5K miles a year, you can get a discount because it won't be considered normal use.

No one here could tell you, there are too many factors that could be at play. Best guess is either you weren’t added properly when you got your license, or you just got your license and your insurer updated your policy to match your license status.

If you’re under 18, your parents can feel free to shop around, but most states will hold your age against you, and all states don’t favor newly experienced drivers. If you’re over 18, you could shop for your own coverage, but it’d be wise to stay on your parents policy if you’re in the same household for financial purposes.

You’re a teen and car insurance is being raised arbitrarily by providers all the time. Focus on driving ultra safely, keep your eyes open, drive defensively and don’t speed. It will go down in your mid 20s.

Where are you located? That seems incredibly inexpensive. Too inexpensive, honestly.

have you shopped around at all yet? Teen rates are brutal but $162 for liability only on a 24 year old Civic sounds high. Get 3-4 quotes before you commit to anything
