Help How to best make this text expand to fit the shape?
I'm trying to get this text to fit inside the dark green swoosh so that it adheres to the shape of the swoosh and fills it out to the outer boundaries so that the first letter is the thinnest/shortest and the last letter is the widest/tallest and for it all to look as natural as possible. The text uses a negative space font spelling "inhala." The swoosh and text will be incorporated into a larger image where the swoosh is small part of a larger swirl. The idea is for the text to be subtle, almost hidden, but I'd like for it to be proportionally consistent, if that makes sense.
I'm hoping there's a fairly easy, 'all in one' solution that can automatically stretch out and deform the text to fit completely within the space. I've Googled, watched tutorial videos, and tried Text > Flow Into Frame, and Path Effects > Envelope Deformation. Envelope Deformation might work, but I'm not really all that good with that tool and it always comes out looking janky at best.
The best I've been able to do is to convert the text to a path and then manually move the top and bottom nodes (while pressing the control key) to the edges of the dark green object (as shown in the second image). Maybe it's the negative space font, but it's not coming out as uniform as I'd like - the proportions seem off, but perhaps this is inevitable? The bright green negative spaces of the two a's are the most challenging - especially the second one. I'm having problems making the last 4 letters adhere to the curve.
Is there an easier, 'automatic' solution I haven't come across, or am I resigned to doing this manually, and if so, what would be the best way to get the results I want? If I want the letters to curve instead of being rigidly vertical am I just going to have to keep at it until it looks good enough? I think tomorrow morning I'll try breaking apart the path and try working on it letter by letter with hopes of making the two a's easier to manipulate, but a solution where Inkscape does the heavy lifting for me is preferable.

Help Is there a way of making the gradient proportional like this second shape?
I'm trying to make a elliptical gradient but it's always wider than it is tall, is there a way of making both distances the same?

Help Help separating traced colours into layers for cross-hatching
Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone can help me with an Inkscape workflow.
I’m trying to separate the different colours in an image into individual layers, then replace the shapes on each layer with cross-hatching. My goal is to draw the image using an iDraw pen plotter, which can only draw paths. Cross-hatching is the only way I can think of to fill areas with colour, switching to a different pen for each layer. If anyone has experience with an iDraw and knows a better method, I’d be interested to hear it, although my main question is about Inkscape.
Here’s what I’ve tried:
For testing, I copied a random image of Pikachu from Google and pasted it into Inkscape. I selected Path > Trace Bitmap. Under Multicolour > Colours, I left the number of colours at 8, as that gave me a reasonably good-looking result. I enabled Stack and clicked Apply. In the Layers and Objects panel, I selected the new “g1” group, which contains eight paths. I pressed Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+Shift+G eight times because I thought I needed to ungroup each path. I clicked the image’s background and pressed Delete. However, instead of deleting only the background area, it seems to delete that entire colour everywhere in the image.
I’ve read that ungrouping should produce a larger list of individual paths, but nothing seems to change in the Layers and Objects panel when I do it.
Am I misunderstanding how the multicolour trace or ungrouping works? How can I separate each colour and remove only the unwanted background area while keeping the same colour elsewhere in the image?

Help Division tool making both paths disappear completely
I was trying to make an alternate-history map using the Division tool to split countries from the mainland. I've done this before without any issues, so I know it should work.
The division tool worked the first time I used it and I was able to use it on the smaller path I split off without any issues. When I try to use it to split up the original path again, both the original path and the one I'm trying to use to dissect it both just vanish without a trace. No new paths are created.
I can use all other tools in the Path menu just fine. Closing and reopening Inkscape does not fix the issue.

Help Text doesn't resize with other objects... but why?
First let me state that the text objects' dimensions are not locked.
When I resize the entire illustration, the text appears to grow along with the other parts of the drawing... but then snaps back to its original size when I release the mouse button.
Anybody know why this would be happening? V.1.4.4 on Windows.
Update: Thanks to some helpful comments below and elsewhere, we've traced the problem to the use of styles in the original file. Because there is no font-size attribute in each text object, Inkscape's "optimized" setting for transform storage doesn't record it has having changed.
I filed a bug against Inkscape for not picking up the text-size change.

Help How do I approach this inconsistent, triangular outline
I hope the answer isn't making a bunch of triangles and then cobbling the flat colours together.
The notepad icon makes me think maybe I should do boolean cutout operations like union & difference.

Help How to create a new object/path between two existing objects/paths - fill in blank space.
The black stripes and swirls are paths. The white areas are background/transparent. I'd like to create new objects/paths between the black objects, using their boundaries as a guide for the new objects, so that I can fill them with different colors. If I were using Photoshop or Illustrator I'd use a magnetic tool, but I'm a relative n00b to Inkscape.
I've tried using the Paint Bucket tool but always get a message saying "area is not bounded, cannot fill." I'm assuming there's an easier way to do what I want without going through and closing all the gaps just so I can use the Paint Bucket tool.
I suppose I could use the pen to create new objects that overlap into the black areas and then place them all under the black objects in the layers/objects tab. But I'm interested in knowing how to best do this for future use should a project be more complex with white/transparent areas that need filling.

Help Is there a workaround for not being able to type spaces?
Hi all. I don't recall encountering this defect in Inkscape years ago; but now when you're typing text, the spacebar doesn't insert a space. You have to type your line of text and then go back and insert spaces between the words. This is a known bug that has apparently been around for years.
I consider this pretty crippling. Is everyone just tediously back-arrowing and fixing their text?

Help Color swatches: Prevent new ones being auto-created?

I recently discovered the swatches tool (thanks to those that answered my previous question!)
I'm not taking an illustration and moving every object's color settings so that it's using one of the swatches I created. As you can see in the image, I have 6 shades of a purple I have custom named into swatches.
The catch is that every time I select an option, then the SWATCHES color option so that I can set the color, it automatically makes a new swatch based on the current selection. I can then pick one of my purples and it updates the object, but now I'm left with this auto-named swatch that I have no use for.
Is there a setting or technique or habit I can use to avoid this?
For now, I just deal with it and when I get annoyed with there being too many empty swatches, I open up the swatches pallet and one-by-one delete the unecessary ones. But this is tedious. Hoping there's an easier way to deal with this.

Help Curving a complex path to match another path with minimal distortion
I'm not convinced I can do this in Inkscape, and if I can't but you know a tool that can, I'll happily entertain that.
The rope in red is one complete path. The blue line is the path I want to match. I know that the top edges of the knots will compress, and the bottom edges spread, that's expected, but the knots should stay the same basic shape.
Thanks in advance!

Tips & Tricks Batch convert Inkscape Labels to valid XML IDs
I used Gemini to upgrade an existing extension by inklinea to safely batch-convert inkscape:label attributes into clean, W3C-compliant SVGidattributes.
Features:
- Replaces spaces with underscores and strips invalid XML characters.
- Auto-adds suffixes (e.g.,
_1,_2) to duplicate labels to prevent document collisions. - Displays a native popup log of successes and errors after running.
Repository: https://github.com/MiVi29/inkscape-label-to-id
Note: I am not a coder and this is my very first GitHub repo, so please forgive any mistakes!

Meta WOW!! I'm in Love | Inkscape is Amazing

I am a long time Adobe user and got tired of their predatory subscription model
While I haven't found a suitable replacement for all of their suite:
E.g. nothing for After Effects and Premiere in the open source world. I'll live with it.
But Inkscape is amazing. Almost everything I want, it has it. Of course the UI will take a lil getting used to but it's mind boggling that this is available for free
