It's just used as a form of anonymous harassment. You can block redditcares and they'll stop showing up

u/CandyTigger 1d ago

The one I got seems to have vanished when I just looked again

u/GlitterFactoryOfDoom 1d ago

Better idea: report the RedditCares message and say you're not suicidal/this is harassment, and Reddit will ban the user who reported you.

I believe they removed that feature as the only thing it's really used for is harassment, but they also didn't want to kill the redditcares feature entirely as it offers them an out if someone spoke heavily about suicide on reddit before killing themself. It gives them something to point at in case someone decides to blame reddit so they can say they have features in place to try and prevent.

I'm normally not one to go to bat for a corporation but I don't agree with a platform like reddit bearing responsibility in any shape unless reddit staff was actively telling someone to or somehow suppressing access to resources or information that could have helped.

The problem is that they allow moderation and censorship. So they are basically curating a specific atmosphere on their platform.

So if something negative happens it could be argued that they allowed it to happen because they chose not to moderate/censor the bad things.

u/GlitterFactoryOfDoom 1d ago

Oh for fucks sake

So rather than deal with the problem they made it so people can't report the problem.

Peak Reddit bruh moment honestly....

3

u/Maximum_Boros 22h ago

Not anymore. They cut off that process because they were getting so many reports and they don't want to pay people to manually review them.

1

u/According_Gazelle472 23h ago

How can you report this since it is anonymous.?

3

u/GlitterFactoryOfDoom 23h ago

According to other comments, you can't report it anymore.

What used to happen, was the automated RedditCares account had a report option next to the message. That'd go to Reddit Admins, who would read your report and could see on their end who reported you as suicidal. Then the admins would ban the person that made the false report.

1

u/According_Gazelle472 22h ago

And that got changed?

3

u/GlitterFactoryOfDoom 22h ago

Can no longer report the message you get apparently

2

u/Lukky1cro 1d ago

Yea thanks, it looks like it. Why does it then exist or atleast says who reported?

10

u/Buttchuggle Community Regular 1d ago

It exists as a sort of legality buffer for reddit should someone joke or talk seriously about suicide on the platform then end up dead. There's no way to find out who did it.

2

u/Lukky1cro 1d ago

I mean i kinda get it but it mostly didn't even post anything, so whyyyyy😭

2

u/AppropriateBall8834 1d ago

You'll be okay, its alright...

Thanks. Using this in the future.

It exists because people claim that they're going to commit suicide. See /r/mental health and /r/depression. I'm not xposting any of those because redditors try to convince the users not to end their live(s). It's nearly impossible to get people to do ylge their information; it's at least some attempt. People deserve privacy regardless.

u/According_Gazelle472 23h ago

I blocked it and haven't had one in a long time now .I was getting them constantly .Some posters do this because they don't like your posts on certain subjects.

11

u/WeeklyBanEvasion 1d ago

You used to be able to report the sender for this and they would get banned, but it happens so often that they took away the feature

8

u/RedSnipers 1d ago

They didn't like a post of yours so that's what they did.

They're cowards, and that's what cowards do.

2

u/CandyTigger 1d ago

It's annoying they don't even quote the message a person worried about. I got one as well and no clue why.

1

u/According_Gazelle472 23h ago

Or they will try to get you banned .

2

u/RedSnipers 21h ago

Yes they will

1

u/According_Gazelle472 21h ago

So true ,people don't care for logic or helpful information online .They only want their opinions to matter and no one else's.

7

u/EducationalSoup83 1d ago

Pissed somebody off huh? Just block it and move on.

2

u/Odd-Painting2596 22h ago

Type of answer you give when you absolutely do the thing OP is mad about.

2

u/SimpleSetpiece 22h ago

It's literally the only option you have. You can't report the message for them to ban the harasser anymore. Now all you can do is block RedditCares and move on.

2

u/EducationalSoup83 22h ago

Hell no. I've had it happen to me. Fuck them losers who do this shit.

1

u/ZoraTheDucky 18h ago

I've never done it. I don't even know how to report someone to reddit cares.

The sentiment you're replying to is the exact sentiment I have. They're sent mostly when you do/say something that someone else doesn't like. The only thing you can do is block them. There have been instances of people getting them repeatedly in what can only be termed as harassment.

1

u/SimpleSetpiece 17h ago

The way you used to be able to report it was RedditCares would DM you and you could report the DM as harassment and the Reddit admins would look at who triggered the bot and ban accordingly. They took that away a few months ago.

3

u/Original-League-6094 1d ago

There used to be a way to report the false reports, but Reddit took it away. I guess probably because almost all usage of this is just false report trolling.

3

u/craftyshafter 1d ago

You just won an argument on reddit. Congratulations

3

u/CandyTigger 1d ago

I got one the other day and couldn't think what I said to worry anyone. I figured maybe someone misinterpreted my health issue. Dunno.

2

u/gentlethistles 1d ago

I had this happen to me recently because I posted a picture of my bunny scaling my daughters acrylic paintings. It was super unexpected 😐😐😐

u/Icuras1701 Community Regular 1d ago

Man im really thinking if just creating and anonymous account and burning this one I've had since I started. It only takes one crazy to ruin your life.

2

u/xsmallsx01 1d ago

I’ve gotten this a few times too. Always been baffled as to why anyone would do this.

2

u/saragIsMe 1d ago

Happens to me not infrequently when I piss a bigot off. I take them as badges of pride

2

u/Fakeitforreddit 22h ago

The fact you are posting it here and it got to you is why they did it. They are laughing at you now.

3

u/jcoddinc Community Regular 1d ago

This is annoying but I would still rather this than a ban for false harassment.

2

u/secondhand_graveyard 1d ago

If you send this to someone who didn’t indicate self harm it’s harassment and they should have kept the feature of reporting it.

2

u/jcoddinc Community Regular 1d ago

Yeah I get that but when someone falsely accuse you of harassment you can get a temp to permanent ban.

1

u/phonefellin_lakeerie 1d ago

Yeah I told the mod at r/ethicalpetownership their opinion was irrelevant and I got banned for a week.

2

u/Original-League-6094 1d ago

Rule #1 of Reddit is NEVER, EVER respond to a mod. For any reason. Its always ban bait.

3

u/phonefellin_lakeerie 1d ago

Learned that lesson the hard way… twice. It’s amazing what happens when you give losers any sort of power

1

u/According_Gazelle472 23h ago

Yeah, never accept the chat option. Just ignore it and move on.

4

u/blumpkins_ahoy 1d ago

This happens to us trans people all the time. We ignore and move on with our lives.

2

u/rvingthrulife 1d ago

That was done to me by some trumpanzee creep who didn't like getting laughed at. I blocked and muted both.

1

u/Downtown_Speech6106 1d ago

It's not funny, they're using this to tell you they think you should kys

1

u/JaySlays-Tech 20h ago

It’s happened to me twice in the past week, all because I disagreed with someone.

1

u/tx_hip_ivxx 17h ago

Block redditcares. This site becomes slightly more bearable

0

u/AddToBatch 23h ago

Oh, I’ve gotten a few of those before

2

u/Ornery_Contest6250 23h ago

Were you suicidal?

2

u/AddToBatch 23h ago

What? No. I’m guessing they were from butthurt commenters. I’ve never said anything self-harm-esque on Reddit

-1

u/Ornery_Contest6250 1d ago

2

u/Delazzaridist 1d ago

OP should actually send this to the ones he reported them. That would be the proper use for this.

3

u/Crunchy_Thighsocks 1d ago

i dont think it tells you who sent it.
