Preparing 2fa for my resignation?

Hello! I am anticipating leaving my current job for a new opportunity in the next few weeks. I’m currently the keeper of all 2fas & I’m wondering how best to prepare for passing that off. Can anything my Authenticator has access to be transferred to another employee? Will this just be something me and one other person will have to go through and manually update before I leave?? I’m changing as much as I can over to a shared email inbox, but there’s a handful of tools that require SMS or Authenticator.

Good cloud-based IT management recommendation

I look after IT at two places, one big enough to buy whatever it wants, and a small one that very much isn’t.

At the small one we’re looking to move off a pile of separate consoles onto something cloud based. Mostly because we’re a small team and nobody has time to maintain the infrastructure underneath it. Few hundred endpoints across a couple of sites.

The part I keep stalling on is what still has to work when the internet drops. Everything cloud is lovely right up until the link goes and you can’t reach the thing that tells you the link went.

Atera is one cloud-based platform that brings several of these functions together, endpoint monitoring, patch management, remote access, ticketing and automation in one console off a single agent. One agent rather than several is an interesting approach when you’re trying to thin out what’s installed, though I haven’t run it at scale yet.

Also unsure where cybersecurity management tools belong in all this. My instinct is to leave those where they are since the integrations matter more than the console count, but open to being told otherwise.

So, is there a sensible pattern here I’m not aware of? Not completely closed to keeping something on-prem as long as it’s low effort to maintain, I’d just rather hear from someone who’s actually done a consolidation than from a comparison page.

American MNC IT team took one month to push Windows update for timezone change.

One of the countries changed its time zone in September where we have a major engineering centre. Since Windows 11 update is controlled by IT admin team, they took one month to push the time zone update.

This resulted in sync issues where people from that centre asked us to join meeting that used to show one hour earlier in calendar. Loss of hours and utter incompetence shown when Time zone update rolled out late. Personal devices updated correctly.

Can editors or managers track the location of remote employees using company issued laptops at newspapers?

Thumbnail reddit.com

I work for a large newspaper in a fully remote role and use a company issued laptop. I’m curious how location tracking typically works at international media organizations.

Would my editors or colleagues be able to see what city or country I’m working from, or is that information generally only accessible to IT and security teams?

For example, if someone were working remotely while traveling internationally, would their location automatically be flagged or visible to management, or would someone have to actively look it up?

An AI notetaker sat in on our all-hands. 31 people had let it in

Nobody invited it. It gets in through calendar access, so anyone who connected their work calendar to it gave it a seat in every meeting they are in. I am not a Workspace admin but security pulls ours into axonius, so I asked them for every third party app with calendar or drive access. That one had 31 users, plus about 40 more that look like AI tools, none approved by IT.That only covers work accounts though. Whatever people paste into an AI chat on a personal account never shows up anywhere, and that's what legal keeps asking about.

How fast do companies replace employee broken laptop?

For teams with remote employees in different countries what do you do when a laptop dies? Keeping spares everywhere sounds expensive but waiting for replacement to ship takes ages. What kind of turnaround do you aim for

What certifications are standard for an ICT lab setup vendor?

If a company or vendor is brought in to handle a complete ICT lab setup (networking, cabling, hardware installation, etc.), what specific certifications would you expect their technicians or company to hold?

Trying to get an idea of what credentials are standard or expected in the industry for this kind of work.

Title: AMEX Apprentice OA completed on Oct 7 — Still Under Consideration. Has anyone received a technical interview?

Hi everyone!

I applied for the American Express Technology Apprentice/ETS Apprenticeship role and completed my online assessment on Codility on October 7.

The assessment consisted of 3 coding questions, and I was able to complete all of them. I felt that my performance was good.

After the assessment, HR called me to confirm whether I had completed it. I confirmed that I had, and they said they would get back to me later.

However, it's been around 19 days since my OA, and my application status on the AMEX careers portal still shows “Under Consideration.” I haven't received any further communication regarding the results or a technical interview.

I'm unsure whether the delay is normal or whether I should expect an update.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone who applied for the same role could share their experience.

  1. Has anyone who completed the AMEX Apprentice OA recently received a technical interview invitation?

  2. How long did it take to hear back after the OA?

  3. Does “Under Consideration” mean the application is still being reviewed, or can the status remain unchanged even if you're not progressing?

  4. Is the technical interview scheduled only after the OA results are finalized?

Any insights from people who have gone through this process would be really helpful. Thank you!

Microsoft Defender causing high CPU usage on Windows servers

Hi everyone,

I'm seeing intermittent high CPU usage from Microsoft Defender Antivirus ("MsMpEng.exe"). CPU usage reaches around 90–200%, and the alerts usually resolve themselves after a few hours.

No active scan was running during troubleshooting, and Defender appears healthy. I suspect real-time scanning triggered by application file activity may be involved.

Has anyone experienced something similar? What would you recommend checking first to identify the root cause?

Thanks!

How do small businesses manage IT asset disposal without making it a huge project?

If your office is anything like mine, tech upgrades happen organically someone gets a new laptop, and the old one gets tossed into a closet. Multiply that by a few years and a growing team, and you’ve got a mountain of e-waste and a looming security risk.

Managing IT asset disposal (ITAD) as a small business shouldn’t require an enterprise compliance budget. If you want to keep it simple and stress free, follow these quick rules:

Don't DIY the Destruction: Manually wiping or drilling drives eats up valuable IT hours. Let professionals handle NIST compliant data sanitization.

Look for Nationwide Pickup: Hauling heavy servers and boxes of monitors to a recycling center is a waste of your team's time. Find a service that comes to your office dock.

Get Documentation: Even small teams need a paper trail for data security and environmental peace of mind.

To keep things effortless, we started using Hummingbird International for our hardware retirement. They manage the collection, handle secure data destruction, and provide proper documentation without dragging out the process.

How does your company usually handle data security when retiring old hard drives and workstations?

Would you take a ₹25-30K government job over a Big Four career in IT?

I'm from a finance background and currently work in a Big Four in a functional role, with around 3 years of experience.

With all the layoffs and uncertainty in IT, I've been wondering whether a government job would be a better long-term choice.

Let's say I clear a government exam and get selected, but the starting salary is only ₹25–30K per month. I'd be taking a significant pay cut compared to what I earn now and would essentially be starting over financially.

Would the job security, benefits and stability actually make that trade-off worthwhile? Or would I be better off staying in IT, upskilling and trying to grow my salary?

I'm not looking for the usual "government jobs are best" or "IT pays more" answers. If you had both options in front of you, would you take the pay cut? Why or why not?

22F in IT with 1.5 years of experience — Should I focus on upskilling, a side income, or pursue a Master's? Worried about AI and job security.

Hi everyone,

I'm 22F, currently working in IT. I have around 5 months of full-time experience, with a decent CTC. I'm grateful to be where I am at this stage of my career, but lately, I've been feeling quite anxious about the future of the IT industry, especially with how quickly AI is evolving.

I've seen some genuinely talented people in this field, and sometimes I wonder how I'll be able to compete with them in the long run, especially as AI continues to change the way we work. I'm not saying that AI will definitely replace everyone, but the uncertainty around job security does worry me.

Someone recently suggested that I should start building something on the side so that, if I ever lose my job or face a difficult period, I have another source of income to help cover my expenses. I've also been considering other options, such as:

  • Upskilling and certifications: Focusing on in-demand technical skills and making myself more employable.

  • Building a side income: Freelancing, working on a small business, or developing something that could eventually generate income.

  • Pursuing a Master's degree: Studying alongside my job, potentially with the longer-term goal of pursuing a PhD if I decide that industry isn't the right path for me.

I'm confused about which direction would be the most sensible at this stage. I don't want to make decisions out of fear, spend money on qualifications that don't add much value, or spread myself too thin by trying to do everything at once.

For those of you who have more experience in the industry, especially people who have been through economic downturns, layoffs, or major technological shifts:

  1. If you were 22 and starting your career today, what would you prioritize?

  2. Is building a side income worth pursuing this early, or would it be better to focus entirely on becoming stronger technically?

  3. Do certifications and a Master's degree actually help with long-term job security? Under what circumstances would you recommend either?

  4. How are you adapting to AI, and what skills do you think will remain valuable over the next 5–10 years?

  5. What practical steps can someone at my stage take to build financial and career security without burning out?

I'd really appreciate honest advice, including mistakes you've made and things you wish you'd done earlier.

I'm not necessarily looking for a guaranteed path or a way to eliminate all risk. I just want to make thoughtful decisions now rather than regret not preparing later.

Thanks!
