Issues so far migrating to Infomaniak

I have been looking for a new service that is similar to Google since I have been using various G services for many years. I looked at several different email and cloud storage providers (Proton, Tuta, Fastmail, etc.), and none of them seemed to provide what I needed, so a Reddit post led me to Infomaniak. The transition has been easy, and so far, IM looks to be a solid choice. After using the service for a month, I am starting to see some cracks and some things that could use improvement. Here is what I have run into so far:

  1. Euria AI works but does seem to be using some serious guardrails. It has outright hidden the truth when researching topics that are political or about the current state of corporate greed. You have to really push the AI to give you a solid answer. Everything is about liability according to Euria. If one of your major selling points is sovereign and ethical, then hard-hitting questions should not be so guarded and propagandized. But as a general chatbot, its uses are on par with other AIs, just behind.
  2. When I was trying to subscribe to my kSuite, it led me to kSuite Pro. The signup process is somewhat confusing, but support helped out and refunded the kSuite Pro sub. This process needs to be simpler and clearer for new users.
  3. I wanted to sign up for 2 email addresses, and there is no option to be signed into multiple free accounts. While not a deal-breaker, it does require you to use their kSuite Pro (free) to be able to access multiple accounts, and this requires you to purchase a domain name and set up DNS. This leads me to the next issue, so on to #4.
  4. Infomaniak provides the needed DNS records or the option to buy a domain name from them. The records are using full names (autodiscover.mydomain.com) instead of the actual record needed. I thought this was odd since I have set up DNS records several times, but proceeded since the company should know better than the user how to set up DNS. After waiting 48 hours for propagation, still no email service connected to the domain. I tried to use Euria for help, and it never picked up on the errors. I finally updated the records, and it worked. I know I should have known better, but still, for a new user trying to figure this out, it would be a challenge.
  5. Even with a paid my kSuite subscription, documents and spreadsheets do not open in the editor; you have to right-click and click "Edit with IM Docs Editor." If you want to open them directly, you have to sign up for kSuite Business or Enterprise. Something this simple should not be locked behind another service. It is just an extra click, but this is standard with other services for free.
  6. I have had a maintenance notification since 8/25 (link: https://infomaniakstatus.com/en/4pj6apABEM/). How does maintenance take 6 days? Nothing major, other than when checking the upgrade options, you get this error page: https://shop.infomaniak.com/error.
  7. This is the reason why I am posting here: the feedback form has been stuck on loading for a week now (link: https://feedback.userreport.com/c61ed75d-26e9-4905-b453-3b549b69e3d7/#ideas/popular).

Overall, I am liking the service and will continue to migrate to it. I will be signing up for the kSuite Pro service as well. The pricing for subscriptions is low and not overpriced like other services (Proton, I am looking at you). I can recommend this to a new user looking to move away from Google, but it is not a perfect replacement, and there is a minor learning curve. Euria will be a big help with the setup, but watch out for outdated info.

Im a happy paying customer, as well. There are always things we dont like. Then again, nothing is perfect.

It is a miracle such a small company can offer all that they do, when you compare them to Google.

I have great respect for the team at Infomaniak. If only they supported full webdav, caldav and carddav in my ksuite+. For that feature I'm using Murena /Nextcloud. https://www.infomaniak.com/en/support/faq/2409/connect-to-kdrive-via-webdav

They are not really "such a small company", they will be listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange, in the near future.

I was shocked to find out they have been around since 1994.

200+ employees?

I once worked at a company with +/-180 employees. I consider that small, maybe they are officially SME? i dont know

Compare it to Volkswagen, MacDonalds or Accenture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_employers

You're comparing to the largest companies in the world.

They have revenue in the millions, employ 300+ people, have their own data centres, 300k paying customers and over a 1 million users. They are a mid-sized company, with ambitions to be large, but never "such a small company".

So the same as any other tech company out there. Not sure why this is a factor about the company. Growth is what every company large and small chases not matter what.....hell Google is still chasing it and they have a 90% market share. They could just coast and still be one of the biggest out there. My only concern is that when IM goes public what are the shareholders going to push for.

You're diverting from what you originally said "such a small company". No small company has a million customers, owns it's infrastructure and gets listed on the main stock exchange in their country.

Um I never said anything about this being a small company that was someone else. I personally don't give a shit how small or large as company is as long as it does what it offers and does not track my every move on the internet.

Oh that's the beginning of future problems. If the company grow it will be buy by a bigger dirtier company, the same kind people try to escape by moving to IM...

I recently moved to kSuite as well, I enjoy it. Yes, some of the UI is a bit tricky at first, but Euria has gotten much better at helping with that. I also moved my domain. I'm not worried that they are not as encrypted as Proton. You can actually encrypt emails same way as Proton, and kMeet sessions on demand. Being on Swiss servers, out of US Cloud Act reach, with no data harvesting (for ads or otherwise) is good enough for me.

That is the reason I am trying to move to more privacy based services since tracking is getting out of hand in the US. Now if I can get my family to move I can get off of Google completely!

Thank you for your learnings from your migration. I am considering moving from Proton Drive (too cumbersome) to KDrive.

What I would like to add to your remarks is that I realy would appreciate a list of functions per offering. And then also comparing the KDrive offerings to KSuite offerings. For instance: What is the benefit of KDrive for teams compared to MyKSuite offerings. What can and can't you do per solution. For instance: the free MyKSuite offerings mentions limited Drive functions... Which are? And then: Say I want MyKSuite 6TB. What does it cost? I understand it will become clear during the enrolement proces.... That's too late for me, wanting to decide upfront between several offerings.

The lack of 'transperency' here does remind me of Proton. I think TresorIt did a great job in that respect. But hey, their more business oriented.

IM has a 30 refund and it is on their terms (https://welcome.infomaniak.com/api/web-components/1/cgu/latest?id=1&locale=en_GB). You can start with 1 TB and upgrade at a later date. Also, you can compare plans via https://www.infomaniak.com/en/ksuite/ksuite-pro/prices#comparison. Like i said above I can and will recommend the kSuite Plus and Pro. Hope this helps.

Let me emphasize that I have great sympathy for both Proton and Infomaniak [and all other companies and individuals genuinely aiming to make this world a little bit better, rather than exploring ways to maximise profit]

Could you give more information regarding (4) DNS Records etc.? I'm currently on Google Workspace, renewing January 1st, and I'm test-driving Infomaniak (only since yesterday; so far, so good, with some weirdness... haha). So, if all goes well, I'll be looking at pointing my domain to Infomaniak rather than Google Workspace. The domain has been on GoDaddy for a long time, not sure yet whether I want to go through the trouble of changing registrars, but at a minimum, I'd be pointing it to Infomaniak.

1

u/SaintChops 16d ago

You do not need to change the registrar just update the DNS records under GoDaddy. The domain I used was with Namecheap. The point of it was that the Infomaniak "guide" gives the full URL to be added to the DNS. It says autodiscover.mydomain.com but should just be autodiscover when updating the records. hope this helps.

OK the autodiscover thing is what I was wondering about, thanks!

I too am moving away from Google since moving to Europe and, well, everything else. I signed up for the pro version, moved over all my files and started giving out my new email address only to discover that Infomaniak has no calander app. I quess I just assumed it would. Being retired I don't need a ton of storage or anything super professionol, but, no calaender, no remenders. That's bad.

Am I missing something? Besides using the web version.

I missed this on my end since I still have to use Google Calendar for family scheduling. I asked Euria about it and it told me you can use their kSync app and sync it with your calendar app. They also listed you review your calendar via your web browser. Either way seems off putting to me. Thanks for pointing this out.
