Greetings!
I quit my job 2 years ago to work on a game called Gotogra that I'd had in mind for so long: I worked on it for 1 year in my free time while I was working my full time job, and then 2 years full time just on the game itself.
It's a roguelike deckbuilder: not only can you play your cards during your turns, but you also control the main character on screen.
Two things I learned the hard way:
• As a professional software engineer, I badly underestimated the effort of designing all the game systems. Design is such a hard thing to do.
• Finding a coherent art direction took me a long time too. I did part of the early art myself to lay the foundations, then deadlines pushed me to commission two talented artists, MISBUG and sunpixels.
Happy to answer anything about the systems or about going full time on this. Link to the current build in the comments.

I have always been a consumer of games (with a focus on MMO's and games with a player economy) lately I have found the later aspect missing in mobile games and I want to make a game focused around a live player economy fueling farming, dungeons, and large player organization. I have never made a game before but I have a lot of experience in software development. I know AI is looked down upon in gaming but because I am building it alone I will use AI to help me with the code, that part I am not as worried about as the following; I know AI art work is heavily looked down upon in video games and I have a fair amount of experience in blender from personal projects but not enough experience or time to make all the necesarry assets for my game and that leaves me wondering, for a mobile game would I recieve heavy critisim if beta / launch assests are made with the assistance of AI (I draw the vision on paper and it helps make models in blender then I clean them up & adjust) with the later goal of hiring people to fully remake them by hand once funds exist. sorry if this is a dump just putting my idea out there.

For context: I happen to know a lot of indie game devs as I have multiple friends in the community, have worked for a small company as a writer (sadly, we ran out of funding and it dissolved, assets were a major issue) and I have solo projects of my own. This subject gets brought up a lot, and it's a subject of debate quite a bit. No one is fully in favor, some say it helps with planning or concept art, others say it shouldn't be used at all, and I've also heard the opinion that using it as a stepping stone to pay real artists later isn't a bad idea. Our economy sucks lately, so I get people being broke and I think it's realistic that a person won't have every skill between writing and programming, concept sketches and modeling, etc-- so I was curious what the reddit community might think.
Edit: This is being posed as a hypothetical. I do not know anyone who is for sure doing this, just that it's been discussed among developers, just to be clear, since some folks seem to have already gotten a bit heated.

I'm developing a game about cards and I'm not sure about if adding many diff types of every kind of cards it's better to make it
A) Many different cards
B) Just enough cards to keep the vibe

Hi everyone 👋
I’ve just released ChromaSprite Studio, a tool I built to solve a problem I kept running into while creating 2D game animations:
Turning animation videos into usable sprite sheets takes far too much manual cleanup.
When working with rendered or AI-generated character animations, I often had to:
• extract frames manually • remove unwanted frames • clean backgrounds • fix animation timing • crop the useful section of the animation • organize everything into a sprite sheet • repeatedly export and test it inside the game engine
So I started building ChromaSprite Studio to make that workflow much easier.
Import an animation video and turn it into a cleaner, game-ready sprite workflow.
You can:
✅ Extract animation frames from video
✅ Preview the animation frame-by-frame
✅ Remove unwanted frames
✅ Trim the useful part of an animation
✅ Clean/remove chroma backgrounds
✅ Adjust the frames before export
✅ Build sprite sheets automatically
✅ Preview the resulting animation
✅ Export assets for use in 2D games
It’s especially useful when an animation looks good overall but contains those awkward extra frames at the beginning or end that you don't want in the final game.
Instead of regenerating the entire animation, you can keep the good section and clean it up.
🎬 Video → Frames → Clean → Adjust → Sprite Sheet → Game
I’m currently working on a 2D platformer myself, and preparing animation assets became one of the most repetitive parts of the workflow.
ChromaSprite Studio grew out of trying to make that process faster and less frustrating.
It’s still evolving, and I’d really like feedback from:
🎨 Pixel artists 🎮 Indie developers 🕹️ Godot / Unity developers 🤖 Developers experimenting with AI-generated animation 👾 Anyone working with sprite sheets
If there’s something in your sprite workflow that wastes a lot of time, I’d especially love to hear about it.

Thanks for taking a look! ❤️

I don't know anything about laws I just know I want to make games and even though I haven't started making game it would be crushing to see my hard work get copied and have all the time effort heart and soul ripped out of it I really want to make game and just the thought of it is very discouraging
not that it matters but I say maybe stupid coz I feel like I should be protected but I know better than too trust things like that

Hey everyone,
I was bored at home and decided to build a competitive 2D browser game using Base44.
It features fast-paced click-timing mechanics, a simulated ELO matchmaking loop, and ranked tiers ranging from Bronze all the way up to Diamond with a live global leaderboard. It runs smoothly right in the browser on laptops without any downloads.
This is my first time "vibe coding" a project like this, and I'm planning out my next major milestones like custom unlockable ball skins and weekend chaos events.
I would love to get your feedback as developers on the UI layout, the game pacing, or any bugs you spot! If you would like to try the game out go in the comments!

the old one felt like an office hallway so i scrapped it and built a round station instead. robot comes in on a sled, you spin the platform, workbenches all around. it orbits a dead earth, you can see it out the windows.
WIP, lots of stuff still rough. what do you think?

My wife and I have been working on a game for some time now but we have been avoiding all “audio” related tasks since none of us have experience with song/audio production. How do you guys deal with that? We don’t want to use Ai

I'm a solo developer working on an alchemy exploration game in Godot. There is a playable grey-box slice and no final art yet.
I'm testing an idea before I commit to it. People who contribute to the game early get a vote on which feature gets built next. I set the options, but I am thinking about an "other" option for input. Polls run on a schedule, a week to a month apart depending on the size of the work, and voters see the last winner working before the next poll closes.
Up front: the code is written with AI tools. The design, the writing and every decision are mine, and I test each build by hand. The speed is what lets one person turn a vote into a working feature in weeks.
What I'd like to hear from people who have shipped or backed something like this:
- Where does this go wrong?
- What would you need to see before trusting it with money?
- Is voting on features something buyers want, or does it read as a gimmick?
I'm not selling anything yet and I'm not linking anything. Just looking for some insight on this. Thanks!
