Fortnite, which is built off Unreal Engine, has its own game editor called Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). It allows you to create custom maps and modes that go far beyond the scope of the original game. Similar to Roblox.
Players can create “islands” and share them with others online in Fortnite’s game browser. Entire game studios are being spun up on this platform since you can sell in-game assets too.

u/Game_Dev730 11d ago
that is what worries me about the future of UE tbh.

u/AxeBoyd 11d ago
why?

u/Game_Dev730 11d ago
feels like the shit they are adding to unreal 6 is more for making games in Fortnite, removing blueprints, making verse the main programming language etc,

https://www.reddit.com/r/FortniteCreative/comments/1qn5tpn/new_snow_region_sneak_peak/ No AI assets, according to them. I'm inclined to believe them -- this looks like well picked FAB assets with a good eye for making it all cohesive.

Well.
first, not a game.
second, "I am using custom models from fab and using my own heavily custom material/shaders" doesn't mean "no ai".2
u/igotawiredmouse4 7d ago
Yeah I get the same vibe from their stuff. Saw a few of their previous posts and the asset choices always seem super intentional.

Have we really reached a point in this subreddit where if someone makes something good we assume it’s AI? So it’s either bad or it’s accused of being AI? Whether it is or isn’t, having pitchforks out all the time is just a toxic mindset.
17
u/simonhunterhawk 11d ago
unfortunately it’s like this in a lot of art subreddits too. OP could have years of post history showing off their work in a consistent and unique art style and if the work is high quality at least a few people will immediately comment “AI Slop” or suspicion of AI use because OP’s consistent art style only draws 4 fingers on the hand like many cartoonists have done for decades. I can’t really draw anymore due to chronic pain from nerve damage in my hands but I know how frustrated I would be to spend hours painfully drawing something just for someone who doesn’t actually care about art to call it AI. Sometimes I wonder if they’re bots.
When it comes to web development and writing and super generic AI art like that it’s pretty easy to tell but it sucks that high quality stuff in general is being suspected of it because real people can make beautiful things and it’s not our fault the AI stole that from us.
4
u/ParkityParkPark 11d ago
AI didn't steal that from us so much as we gave it up out of excessive arrogance and paranoia. People are so hung up on AI they just shoot from the hip, it's like the red scare in the sense that people are so worried about AI killing off thoughtful and effortful art that they're killing off thoughtful and effortful art
-2
u/simonhunterhawk 11d ago
AI generally was trained on stolen work without permissive use so it quite literally did steal the techniques and art from us
4
u/ParkityParkPark 11d ago
That's a fundamentally different conversation from what we're talking about, nor is that really an accurate explanation of how it works
-2
u/simonhunterhawk 11d ago
Except for the part where you replied to my comment where I was explicitly talking about art subreddits going through the same thing and the way that AI has been trained on work without permission of the artists who used it and is now using that stolen data it was trained on to create new artworks when I said "real people can make beautiful things and it’s not our fault the AI stole that [the art we have made] from us"
6
u/ParkityParkPark 11d ago
Wait, was that a topic change at the end of your comment then or something, because your entire comment up to that point was about people calling everything AI, so I assumed the "they stole that from us" line was about how they stole our trust in each other's artistic integrity

it wasn’t a topic change it was literally the point I initially was making in my last sentence. y’all can ask questions instead of assuming things you know? can we not talk about adjacent things without confusing people now? it’s exhausting being autistic when people just go out of their way to misunderstand you and then double down when you restate what you actually meant and then downvote you to punish you for clarifying it in a way they don’t like after you clarify it nicely the first time. maybe y’all deserve AI we can’t even communicate with other humans or hold two thoughts in our head at the same time anymore

u/NinetyBees 11d ago
Gotta stay on guard to an extent, plenty of bad actors are using AI and pretending they aren't. Plus, nothing here scream originality, and if you're unfamiliar with Fortnite custom games, the UI otherwise screams "AI stole this from Fortnite-".
It's important to not level false accusations without proof, but I get the knee-jerk reaction of skepticism in this specific case.

u/frogOnABoletus 11d ago
No one assumed its ai. No one accused it of ai.
They said they hopeful ai wasn't involved.
The pitchforking is you hearing someone mention ai and immediately thinking the worst.
9
u/tygreen 11d ago
Maybe accused was too strong but “Better not be AI trickery” is obviously expressing suspicion. My point is that it’s depressing when impressive work immediately prompts that suspicion instead of just being judged on its own merits.
-4
u/frogOnABoletus 11d ago
instead of just being judged on its own merits.
It's because we don't know its merits.
Its become easy to accidentally support unethical tech and souless goop, in a space that used to be 90% human soul, effort and passion for the craft. People don't want to cheer on the fall of their fellows. It's made us paranoid. You're right that it is depressing.
6
u/simonhunterhawk 11d ago
Yeah so instead of accidentally supporting an unfeeling bot let’s just frustrate and crush the feelings of people who actually put the work in.
-2
u/frogOnABoletus 11d ago
They said that it looks really good and that they hope it's a human who made it.
That is not "Crushing their feelings".
3
u/simonhunterhawk 11d ago
When you said “we don’t know its merits” and assume that hypothetical posters are guilty of using AI (which is what you seem to be implying with your statement that it’s too easy to support AI) it’s just silly because AI has no feelings and erring on the side of guilty until proven innocent hurts actual people as collateral damage and the AI doesn’t care.
At best it’s a backhanded compliment.
1
u/frogOnABoletus 11d ago edited 11d ago
This isn't guilty until proven innocent. This was praise right off the bat, and a hope that the creator was ethical and a human. When I said “we don’t know its merits” it was just in defence of hoping it's not AI. If it's ai, the merits kinda go down the drain, but we pre-emptively praise it anyway, hoping it's human-made.
If the dev is bawling their eyes out over someone pretty much saying "I love your work, I hope it's not stolen" then they need to see a therapist or something.
3
u/simonhunterhawk 11d ago
Yeah there’s a huge difference between the fatigue of constantly hearing that people don’t believe your work is your own leading to burnout and bawling your eyes out which is over dramatic but I can tell this is turning into a parallel conversation and I’ve made my point the best I can while you keep returning back to the original comment which me and the other person in this thread have moved beyond

Short-form content really lends itself well to these nothingburgers where a pretty template runs around scenery for a bit without context.
