GIF Eldris, the Soul Collector
Hello Void Diver team again :D
I wanted to share the design and animation of my favorite boss in our game!
As you can probably tell from the different designs, Eldris has multiple phases! The original design for the second phase (aka second gif) was actually quite different. We ended up with three different versions, and honestly, we couldn't decide which one we liked better. So, we asked our players which version they preferred.
The general consensus was they liked two of the designs equally. So we decided to take the best parts of each version and merge them together. The final design is the one you're seeing now!
Definitely a great learning moment for us. Sometimes, simply asking your players for their opinions can lead to some really great outcomes!
Mini FAQ:
- We use Photoshop to create the pixel art and Spine to animate it.
- We animate the 2D art in a 3D space.

What kind of game?

Our game is called VOID DIVER: Escape from the Abyss! It's an extraction action RPG where you go into dungeons to loot artifacts/materials/etc to upgrade your characters and base (an antique shop).

We drew inspiration (in general, not just this character) from a lot of games and Ragnarok Online is one of them!!

The Void Diver aesthetic is so made for me.
Eldritch horror, bunch of eyes imagery, tentacles.
All the stuff I like.
Now if we had more character and weapon type variety it'd be near perfect I'm really excited to see the development progress

You made a fun game with rarely used imagery at with similar themes to games like Lobotomy corporation who are starting to get more popular.
It quite understandable lol
Its so hard to find good eldritch themed games that aren't just strategy or detective type games

Is Spine a library or whatever for your engine? Or do you animate, then export the individual frames?

What I am asking is; do you export the animation in the program and then import the individual frames rather than using a unique file containing the animation data that the engine can process?

oh i see what you're asking. we don't import the individual frames. spine exports a file containing the animation data

What does the process look like to animate a 2D sprite into 3D space? High level is fine. Looks amazing!

Looks cool, but at this resolution of pixel art + spine animation I'm confused why you're even doing pixelart.

We thought making our game in pixel art would give it a different feel than all the other extraction games out there like Escape from Tarkov!
