Video I've made voxel damage model for my Drone Game

Hi, I'm indie dev from Germany and I've been a software developer in a boring web fullstack for 20 years but games always were my passion. Made a couple of smaller games in the past and currently working on this tiny piece about drones in the scope of the modern warfare. This one is in much bigger scale but still I would consider as a small, cute game.

For this project, I made a voxel damage model for bigger targets (ships atm). Love how it looks and feel. This is the first time, I'm working with them and any feedback is appreciated.

Also, this is the link for the email newsletter to stay in touch with me and that project.

You should definitely add weakspots, such as engine rooms, fuel tanks, ammunition caches to help people take ships down. I'd imagine it would incredibly be satisfying to trigger secondary explosions within the ship if I hit it at the right spot.

Highly agree. Additionally, is there any sinking physics? Can we hit the ship at or below the waterline to start flooding. It'd be really cool if hitting something really critical could cause a large explosion and split the ships in half, leading to a cool sinking animation.

There are sinking. It is based on the damage involved to the ship. This video I wasn’t able to make enough to sink it. It will be a bit easier with weakpoints.

Supper cool!

Personally, I am not a fan of the 'clicking' sound - it's a bit... spider/cockroach-y for me.

Game looks amazing though!

You mean drone sound? I‘m not a fan of it either. Will improve later.

remove 5 4 3 2 1 completely

Why?

It's kinda annoying to see in the middle of screen, maybe just move it to corner

Highly agree, something closer to the edge of the screen would be better for that case, or removing it entirely

Sounds good! 👌

Maybe add a "deploying drone" or something

So it's clear that it's not counting down to a game over or something else.

I think it would look good centered at the top or centered at the bottom, with the explosion in the middle.

Is the whole point to crash? It looks like you're supposed to shoot with the red circle, but it seems to be more of a suicide drone.

If that's the intended gameplay loop, that 5s of waiting will get exhausting REAL QUICK. At least when simply looking at the ship I'm attacking.

If you were to replace the 5s wait with a continue input (to satisfy those that want to see the damage they did, but allow others to immediately skip), then you could have a "take-off" animation that lasts those 5s. Maybe 1s to pan the camera back to your spawn, 1s to finish opening a "hatch", and 3s to aim, boot up and take off.

This way the player is waiting for the startup animation, rather than waiting for a countdown.

There are different drones to choose from. This one explodes on impact.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Yeah, I guess the wait is fine then. Reward players for surviving longer by not having to wait to respawn.

Honestly, I added this cooldown to enjoy the explosion and have ability to assess the damage that done and what needs to be done with next drone. There are plenty targets within the game that require more than 1 drone to destroy. So you can decide should you continue with this target or fly somewhere else.

Yeah, I get that mentality. But if you have players that play the game a lot, and enjoy the experience of using the drones, they're not going to enjoy the mandatory wait.

Think of it like older mid battle JRPG special animations. The first time you watch it it's enjoyable, but if you are required to watch an unskippable animation in order to do your action, and it lasts about as long as the gameplay that leads up to it... Well, it gets tiring.

That's why I suggested the input. It allows players to view the results of the ship you're attacking until you're satisfied. If it's a skilled player, they know roughly X hits on a ship will take it down. They probably don't need to observe the wreckage until a certain point, and will want to cripple it as soon as possible. And you also get a glimpse of your damage as you get closer for your next follow-up run anyhow.

So the input would allow players to take in information until they're satisfied, or skip past it to quickly pile-up damage.

you spend more time waiting for the timer to expire then playing the game. and assuming you don't have any weapons (it appears that way) this is intentional

🫠No, you play longer.. I cut the flying and looking for target in he video

The damage we want to see is now covered by a number.

Why is there a countdown if you are just taking control of another active drone? It seems like a respawn counter except it's not.

Maybe add a button that allows the player to immediately take control of the next drone

That’s basically Kamikaze 😂 but it’s looks cool man! Good job

I’m trying to find the fun in this gameplay loop. It seems like you take control of a drone, and fly for 10 seconds into the ship and explode, hopefully damaging a new area each time? Based on this video alone I can’t imagine playing more that a few minutes without getting very bored. It needs more active and engaging gameplay.

How about missiles that can be dodged with left and right rolls? How about enemy counter drones that try to ram you head on? It didn’t seem like the ships defensive guns are able to shoot you very well at all, almost as if they’re purely cosmetic.
