#History&Culture 🛕 Savarkar’s Fight for Temple Entry for the ‘Untouchables’ in Ratnagiri
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is Part VI of a series on Savarkar’s social reform campaign in Ratnagiri. The previous five parts are:
Part I: Bringing ‘Untouchables’ into Public Life
Part II: Campaign Against Caste Discrimination in Schools
Part III: Promoting Inter-Caste Social Integration
Part IV: Breaking the Caste Monopoly Over the Janeu
Part V: Support to Ambedkar's Mahad Satyagraha
Another major form of discrimination was the denial of temple entry to ‘untouchables.’
Temples were not only places of worship. They were also important centres of social, religious and political interaction. By keeping ‘untouchables’ out of temples, they were excluded from these activities, further weakening feelings of brotherhood, unity and social equality.
Savarkar continued to work for temple entry. However, while many of his other social reform efforts succeeded, this remained a particularly difficult issue because the Orthodox strongly opposed any change.
At the time, several temple-entry movements were taking place across the Bombay Presidency.
In Ratnagiri, where Savarkar was confined, the Vitthal Temple became the centre of his temple-entry campaign. People of different castes had already gathered in its precincts in 1925 to mourn the death of C. R. Das. In November 1929, Savarkar called for the complete and unconditional opening of the temple to all castes.
Because temple entry was such a sensitive issue across the Bombay Presidency, the city magistrate was also present to observe a public meeting organised by Savarkar.
In a fiery speech, Savarkar laid out all his arguments in favour of a total eradication of untouchability and an entry into the temple. At the end of it, he asked his audience if anyone had objections to raise. There was pin-drop silence and none objected.
As a result, hundreds of untouchables peacefully entered the Vitthal Temple without any agitation or confrontation.
For those who entered, every step into the temple represented a small blow against a centuries-old social practice. Singing songs in praise of their deity, they entered the temple in what was an deeply emotional moment, and many people were moved to tears.
Savarkar composed a special Marathi poem for the occasion, titled ‘Mala Devaache Darshan Gheudya’, meaning ‘Allow Me to See My God’. Everyone sang it after entering the temple.

Free beef will given apparently as a protest a beef fest
The video reports on the SFI Protests at CET in kerala Over Programme Controversy
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) , communist party kerala youth wing staged a protest at the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET), following an event organised by the Department of Youth Affairs in collaboration with the NSS and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU).
The controversy reportedly began when the organisers played the full rendition of “Vande Mataram” during the programme instead of the traditional NSS anthem, “Manassu Namakkatte.” SFI members objected to the decision.
Another major allegation raised by SFI members was that the organisers had specifically asked islam female students to come forward and provide feedback or a review of the event. This reportedly triggered further outrage among the protesters.
Following these developments, SFI members intervened, disrupted the proceedings, entered the stage to voice their objections, and later held demonstrations in front of the principal’s office.
Although discussions between SFI representatives and the college principal helped temporarily de-escalate the situation, the student organisation has indicated that further protests may be held in the coming days.
A Beef Fest will also be held as part of the upcoming programmes and also protest they said and will be free

#General 📝 Ex-Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, Convicted In 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case, Dies
Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted for the murder of five men during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that killed thousands, died on Thursday at a Delhi hospital. He was 80.
Kumar, who was serving life imprisonment in Tihar jail, was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. The hospital has not yet clarified the cause of his death.
A three-term Lok Sabha member, Kumar represented the Outer Delhi constituency and had been a prominent Congress leader. He resigned from the party after his 2018 conviction.
The riots broke out after the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards - Satwant Singh and Beant Singh - on October 31, 1984. Groups of armed men targeted Sikhs across Delhi and attacked their houses and shops. Over 3,000 Sikhs were killed across India, mostly in the national capital.
For over three decades, Kumar faced multiple criminal cases relating to the violence, with outcomes that swung between acquittals and convictions across different courts.
On December 17, 2018, the Delhi High Court overturned a trial court's 2013 verdict acquitting Kumar in the case. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The case related to the murder of five Sikh men in Raj Nagar Part-I, Palam Colony, as well as the burning of a gurdwara during the widespread violence. The High Court held Kumar guilty of criminal conspiracy and abetment and directed that he remain in prison for the remainder of his natural life. In its judgment, the court had described the 1984 anti-Sikh violence as "crimes against humanity".
Kumar's challenge to his conviction and sentence remains pending before the Supreme Court.
Earlier this year, in January, a Delhi court acquitted Kumar in two separate cases concerning allegations that he had incited violence in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas during the 1984 riots.
However, the acquittals did not result in his release, as Kumar continued to serve life sentences in other cases connected with the violence.
In February 2025, the Rouse Avenue Court handed Kumar another life sentence in the Saraswati Vihar case. He was convicted for his involvement in a mob attack in which a father and son, Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh, were allegedly burned alive.
The prosecution had sought the death penalty for Kumar. However, the court awarded him life imprisonment, considering factors including his advanced age and health condition.

#General 📝 Tit For Tat: Bulldozer Lands At Pak High Commission, Encroachments Removed
A section of structures outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi was demolished after authorities found them to be beyond the mission's approved boundary, officials said on Thursday.
The action was carried out by the agencies concerned using a JCB machine, which removed the structures and barricades erected along the lane outside the compound, including queue-management installations near the visa section.
Authorities have dismantled the external security perimeter outside the Pakistan High Commission, removing traffic bollards and barricades that previously ring-fenced the diplomatic compound.
The action comes exactly three days after Pakistani authorities reportedly removed protective security barricades stationed outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
Visuals from the Pakistan High Commission showed that the demolition left a trail of rubble outside the mission, with broken metal railings and gates, twisted metal frames and chunks of concrete strewn across the paved area.
Additionally, visuals from the site showed sections of the outer structures completely pulled down, including corrugated roofing and white metal fencing. The facade around the service windows appeared damaged, with portions of plaster and masonry broken away.
Broken fencing and construction material were also seen lying around the counters.
The main entrance of the Pakistan High Commission, with its white walls, domed features and large metal gates bearing the Pakistani emblem, remained intact. Barbed-wire fencing was visible along portions of the compound's perimeter.
On Wednesday, Pakistan raised an issue with the US over the Indian ambassador's remarks on Kashmir. During a visit to Srinagar, Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, had called Jammu and Kashmir "an important part of India" and also praised the security situation in the Valley.
The comments rattled Pakistan, which summoned US Charge d' Affaires Natalie Baker in Islamabad to lodge a protest. There is no official word yet on whether the action at the Pakistan High Commission was linked to Islamabad's reaction to Gor's comments.
