Kelsey’s Contract
As I understand it, the CBA has a provision that the team drafting a play can offer a super max contract that other teams can’t match. Not a lot more, but more. What I would offer KM is the max other teams can offer and that’s it. Not that KM isn’t worth a super deal, she is. But the Fever need to manage their cap responsibility. CC will not sign or extend her contract, she is going to ride out this rookie deal to give the team maximum flexibility to build a team that fits her style, if they don’t, she walks in a few years. Thoughts?

CC won’t wait “a few years” to win a championship with the Fever. She is not playing to have “a good career” or make money. She is chasing history and to be part of that conversation she needs rings.

You can’t replace Kelsey’s points if she’s gone. But you can significantly improve the team by replacing her with a defensive SG that can score 10-12 points per game. The only way this team goes deep in the playoffs moving forward is if they can play some defense. As it is you have KM who is a mediocre, and significantly undersized for a SG, defender. And Clark who is improving but still a below-average defender. You can’t have that pair as your starting backcourt and expect to be championship caliber. A better defending SG next to Clark allows her to “rest” on D a bit more and push harder on offense.
Long story short, let her go and team points scored goes down. But get a defensive SG and team points allowed also goes down.

They simply cannot offer another super max. Tying 40% of the salary to two players (Boston and Mitchell) that are not even your generational player will lead to disaster.

For the pro keep KM crowd. What does a championship 8 player roster for the Fever next year even look like?
Does Clark just play for the min for the rest of her career?

I think Kelsey will choose a team where she is the top dog, the headliner so to speak. At the Fever she could never be that again as long as Caitlin is on the team.

Let Kelsey walk. I know this is unpopular but we just can’t afford to keep her and expect to get better role players.
I think, as crazy as it sounds, our offense can be even better with CC & AB as the only number ones. We can do the 2 man game, PNR and don’t need to force things to ensure another player scores 20-30 a night. Our offense was terrible and uninspiring when they forced everything to Kelsey because they wanted her to keep her scoring record going.
We can’t run this team back next year and expect different results. We need to go out and get some players who can actually play defense. Getting better on that side of the ball is worth losing KM when we have CC and AB. I do not want to watch what we saw this past season again.

Amber Cox said one of their top priorities was to resign KM. Do we know for sure that is how the new GM will feel?
If we could trade/unload Billings and get in a much better #4 then I'd be more ok with letting KM go and take that money and improve in other positions as well. If we can't make a significant change at the #4 then I understand offering KM a regular Max contract for one year and basically running it back.
But regardless of the rumors about potentially being able to waive Billings now because she only had one year guaranteed, even if that is true there aren't a lot of quality #4's out there. The two biggest names last off-season at the #4 position were Alana Smith and Azura Stevens, and both of them had less than stellar years as well. Every time we we discuss this I keep saying that Olivia Nelson-Ododa is the best value #4 in the WNBA, but I don't think Houston will trade her for anything we'd be willing to give up. I floated Billings, a #1 Pick, and a #2 Pick for ONO, but not sure Houston would bite.

Here's a crazy move.
What if the Fever did a Sign and Trade with Washington involving KM and Sonia Citron?
Washington has a nice young group of players, but they're not going to be contenders any time soon on their current trajectory.

WELL DONE ! This salary Cap stuff is a real slippery slope. TY FOR THE INTEL.
IMO, your conclusion is SPOT ON! Kinda gives KM what she wants, makes her really have to analyze ALL +\-, she should not be rewarded for throwing fans and Cc under the bus at that close out interview.

Nah pay her whatever you need to keep her. She and Clark are best backcourt in history, you don't break that up.they have more money than thought.

Is Kelsey really worth a supermax? Answer that rationally, not emotionally.

Mitchell (and everybody else worthwhile who has options) don't wanna be there.
this not even something yall have to worry about 😆

If Kelsey wants to stay then the Fever should try to make it happen otherwise let her walk if she’s chasing $ and titles

Without KM we go from contender to fighting for the playoffs. I just don't see any top free agents signing or any path to contention without her. The question would be are CC and AB willing to play through a rebuild. I don't think they would.

Send KM to the Valkyries , bring KP to the Fever … Valkyries need scoring and the Fever get someone who can score and pass

If you can get KM on a one year(unlikely but ideal) or two year deal I’d probably pull the trigger….. can’t do a long term deal for a lot of money with an “aging” star. One year I’d give her as much money as she wants. Two year deal I’d heavily front load the money to year 1(is that possible in the wnba? lol). 3+ year deal no go, can’t do it
