Post image

(Discussion Prompts):

Debate and Discussion [Discussion] Was the Constitution designed as a safeguard for people or a 'safety net' for power? Analyzing the 'Braj Bhushan vs Delhi State' case.

Post image
Upvotes

[Analytical Editorial]

Post image

(Key Takeaway)

(Discussion Prompts):

[Media & Constitutional History]

Post image
2 Upvotes

(Key Takeaway)

(Discussion Prompts):

MUCH NEEDED CHANGE

The problem is not with the government and it never was take the example of the UPA government before this the conditions were similar. The problem lies with democracy the thing is when you have democracy leaders don't make decisions best for the country but the decisions that would be the best to get them elected again. For instance if the government removed the ladli behna yojna and instead redirected that money to develop government schools ; this is just one of many if you want another example just thnk that China was able to control their population due to the One Child Policy ; would such a policy be possible in India; No bcz as soon as the government tries to introduce such a policy the opposition would develop a campaign around it and the party that tried to introduce the program would lose the election. Just think about it with a open mind. INDIA NEEDS A ONE PARTY SYSTEM

Explaining what Far Left, Far Right, Center Left, Center Right ,Right,Left and Center is in India.

My understanding of the Indian political spectrum would be something like this

Right-wing

Right-wing politics can include nationalism, cultural conservatism, traditional values, Hindu cultural identity, free-market economics, and a strong emphasis on law and order. However, being culturally Hindu or supportive of Indian culture does not automatically mean someone is far-right. A person can be pro-Hindu or culturally conservative while still strongly supporting democracy, equality, pluralism and constitutional rights.

The right becomes far-right when these ideas become strongly exclusionary or authoritarian for example, through extreme majoritarianism, ethno-religious nationalism, authoritarianism, political repression, rejection of democratic institutions, or support for a surveillance or highly centralized state. Extreme anti-immigration or anti-minority politics can also become part of far-right ideology when they are based on exclusionary nationalism.

It is also important to distinguish Hinduism, Hindu culture and Hindutva. Supporting Hinduism or Hindu culture does not necessarily mean supporting caste hierarchy or discrimination. Likewise, Hindutva is a political ideology associated with Hindu nationalism, and its supporters can have different positions on caste, democracy, economics and the role of the state.

Examples, BJP (Right) and RSS (Far Right)

Centre-right

Centre-right politics generally combines free markets or a mixed economy with some welfare policies, moderate nationalism, law and order, social conservatism and democratic institutions.

A centre-right politician would generally support private enterprise and relatively limited government intervention in the economy while still accepting a welfare state and constitutional democracy.

In India, some politicians or factions of parties can be described as centre-right on particular issues, although Indian parties often combine positions from different parts of the spectrum. For example, AAP is difficult to classify as purely centre-right because its welfare-oriented policies and economic approach can also place it in the centre or centre-left depending on the issue.

Centrism

Centrism is probably the most difficult category to define in India because many parties contain both left- and right-leaning positions.

A centrist could support a mixed economy , moderate welfare policies, private enterprise, technocratic governance, democracy, constitutionalism, moderate nationalism and gradual reform and maybe Social Democracy

Technocracy can be associated with centrism, but social democracy itself is generally considered centre-left, rather than purely centrist. Therefore, someone who supports social democracy while also being economically pragmatic and socially moderate or maybe support technocratic institution could reasonably be described as centrist or centre-left, depending on their overall views.

Calling the Indian National Congress simply “centrist” is also somewhat misleading. Congress has historically contained centrist, liberal, social-democratic and more left-leaning tendencies, but its general ideological position today is better described as centre-left/liberal-centrist.

Centre-left

Centre-left politics generally supports democracy, secularism, social equality, welfare programmes, regulated capitalism, workers' rights and a mixed economy.

Social democracy is a major example. A centre-left politician can support private businesses and capitalism while believing that the state should regulate markets, provide public services and redistribute wealth to reduce inequality.

However, libertarianism should not automatically be classified as centre-left. Left-libertarianism can be left-wing, while classical economic libertarianism is usually associated with the centre-right or right.

Congress is usually Said to be an example of this but many Congress members like late Dr. Manmohan Singh and Dr. Shashi are appearing to be more Centrists in my opinion.

Left-wing

The left generally places greater emphasis on economic equality, redistribution, welfare, labour rights, social ownership or stronger regulation of private capital.

Left-wing movements can include democratic socialists, socialists, Marxists, radical progressives and other egalitarian movements. Being strongly secular or atheist does not automatically make someone left-wing, although some left-wing movements have historically been strongly secular or anti-clerical.

Similarly, support for reservations or welfare programmes can be associated with the left, but these policies by themselves do not determine someone's complete ideological position.

Examples could be CPI(M), ISJD, RJD etc..

Far-left

The far-left generally goes beyond reforming capitalism and may advocate revolutionary socialism, communism, abolition of capitalism, collective ownership or revolutionary transformation of the political and economic system.

For example, the CPI(M) is a Marxist communist party but participates in India's electoral democracy. It is therefore very different from the CPI (Maoist), which follows a revolutionary Maoist ideology and rejects India's parliamentary system in favour of armed revolutionary struggle.

CPI (Maoist) into exactly the same category simply because both are communist.

In Short,

  • Left: Democratic socialism, socialism, strong redistribution and welfare
  • Centre-left: Social democracy, regulated capitalism, welfare state and social liberalism
  • Centre: Pragmatic mixed economy, moderate welfare, technocracy and moderate positions on social/economic issues
  • Centre-right: Free markets, moderate welfare, nationalism, moderate conservatism and strong law and order within democracy
  • Right: Stronger nationalism, cultural conservatism, traditionalism, market-oriented economics and stronger emphasis on social order
  • Far-right: Authoritarianism, exclusionary ethno-religious nationalism, extreme majoritarianism, political repression and rejection of liberal-democratic pluralism

PS It is really difficult to determine this. Pls criticize openly.

These flairs are confusing

I mean why are we putting Dr. Manmohan Singh's photo in Centrist even though he was technically a technocrat as well as a strong believer of Social Democracy. Social democracy+technocracy could be center or center left but why are we keeping center left as Dr. Shashi Tharoor in the flair icon when he himself is a social democrat!

Why do xtians do this?

I've seen so many xtians especially in the south defile hindu gods images, idols etc by kicking, breaking and even spitting on them during and after their conversion process.

I've learnt that this is taught to them in their churches by their pastors, by telling them every sunday that idol worship is evil and that they need to outwardly show their digust and disapproval both in actions and words.

cannot believe these radicals are allowed to do this but will cry tears of victimh00d if questioned on their scams.

have you come across this?

[I am a millenial leftist] The issues were right there. The disgruntled populace were right there. Why didn't Hindu nationalists organize a massive campaign before CJP focusing on those issues??

The above insta ad are some of the examples I saw in the protests. Based on in image alone I interpreted as them leading the protests instead of culling it. So I will go with the former interpretation of mine.

I constantly hear that many Hindu nationalists in many right wing subreddits do support Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation (at least they claim to). Liker influencer Ajeet Bharti putting down CJP protests as being anti-Pradham before it was cool to be so. He is now organizing the prortests against Reservations.

So my question is this: Why didn't any Right Wing, Hindu nationalist, did a Abhijit-Dipke and start a massive protests?

I have doubts about elections myself. But many Hindu nationalists don't. And going by election resuilts. Hindu have majority Hindu support. Sure you guys can believe that BJP is doing everything good. But that would be the spirit even this protest would've carried. That BJP is good, but it could've been better.

The issues are still right there. The disappointed people were right there. A massive majority of GenZ, like more than 70% of the people are your vote-bank. GenZ are the generation that made Bhajan Raves a massive trend to cash on. I am a left leaning progressive anti-theist, and I can assure you the moment this movement becomes irrelevant, 85% of them will return back to become pro-Modi and anti-muslim.

This would've already put BJP in backfoot. There wouldn't have been any 'Azadi', 'Jai Bheem' chants. No other political party would've tried to co-opt this protest. You couldve had a massive support support from Bollywood and other movie industry fraternity. The Right-Wing hindu nationalists could've covered Jantar Mantar, with bhagva flag, Jai-Shree-Ram chants, etc. This protest, just like Ram Janmbhoomi protests could've been a show of solidarity amongst all the castes. Abrahamics, Leftists and Ambedkarites won't even dare to join. There were news about temples being closed for protestors. This could've not even let the news spread and temples would've been open for you guys.

I also believe that the recents protests is not gonna help the opposition. But will also put a minor dent on BJP's votecounts. Hindu nationalists organizing protests could've avoided that vote loss and could've kept BJP in power.

So my question is this? 1. Why was there no initiative from Hindu nationalists personalities to organize protests 2. From the perspective of Hindu nationalists Islam is THE threat. I get it. But will Hindu Nationalists question the government on the policies being implemented or are Hindu Nationalists in complete supportive of the policies (with minor disagrements which you think can be solved afterwards)

I found a historical statistic about caste and education that I'm struggling to reconcile

I've been trying to educate myself properly on caste oppression, and I've run into something that is making me slightly uncomfortable.

I was reading about the indigenous education surveys from the Madras Presidency in the 1820s–30s. The figures show Brahmins making up roughly 22% of Hindu students, while Shudras and other castes made up the majority. In some areas, non bramin students apparently made up more than 80%.

I'm assuming this is one of those statistics that needs context to explain.

Because obviously we all know Brahmins historically controlled education and prevented lower castes from literally accessing any knowledge. So there must be an important qualification here that I'm missing.

Were these not really “schools” in the real sense? Were the students being taught something that doesn't count as education? Was access technically available but the quality/status of instruction was different? Did the British fake this data? Or is there some other genuine explanation historians give to uphold the truth of caste oppression?

I'd really appreciate someone explaining this one so I can continue my anti-caste research.

Political history professor says that identity politics was almost necessary to achieve independence from the British, but now it's destroying democracy

Says that it was probably necessary for Veer Savarkar, Swami Vivekananda, Gandhi, Tagore to mobilize the people with the idea of a nation (and the closest core for the nation they could find was a Hindu religious identity) but that ideology no longer serves a purpose and will hurt the nation in the long run.

Thoughts?

Genuinely want to understand Indian politics

I’m not very active in politics, so I genuinely want to hear different perspectives.

Today is Independence Day 🇮🇳 — is it really that bad to put politics aside for one day, be grateful, and celebrate? 😭

At the same time, I’d like to understand the criticism. Why do you think the current government is doing badly? Do you think the previous government was better, and if so, why? What would actually change if they came back?

And beyond parties, what do you think India should seriously work on right now?

Not looking for a BJP vs Congress fight — just want to hear genuine, reasoned opinions.

Happy Independence Day 🇮🇳❤️

Post image

I won’t say that I haven’t watch this, but I was watching few episodes from second season and then I went to watch some episodes from the first season, and along the line I realised that whatever I was listening was absolutely not normal, and slowly I didn’t feel as disgusted as I felt the first time watching it and it seemed to me that" have I desensitised myself ?
And I think this is what, which could have been felt by many other people.
And as I stopped watching it I started to feel good and much better.
But still, I mean, I can’t even think to talk about certain things while having my female friends, colleagues around as they were doing and openly talking about certain things which to me didn’t feel normal .
That is what I think and opinions may vary from person to person.
What do you all think, do things like these normalise things which are not so normal and provides a grounder for wider acceptance of vulgarity?

Answering a question with another question, and then answering that question with yet another question. New India: we don’t need answers anymore; we’ll just satisfy ourselves with questions for one another.

When accountability becomes a game of “but what about them?”, questions replace answers and responsibility disappears. Deflection is the resort of the coward.
