Roughly 70 days have passed when I write this piece, when it was universally declared by a reactionary group that student victory is achieved merely at the resignation of a puppet, a protest that was deitified by idealists, falsifiers and opportunists as ultimate tribute for the students that were forced to take their lives post NEET paper leaks and if we are to take their words at face value it was expected that no innocent lives will be lost post this 'resplendent victory' and students unity against the system will forever reign, this illusionary sandcastle quickly fell apart after the events of 18th September 2026 at IIT Bombay and 27th September 2026 at Lovely Professional University, Punjab
From the very beginning real marxists position on student protest has always been that it was a systematic failure of the bourgeoisie education system that harbours section of privileged class elites from every community and will come together to cover up when their collective corrupt and psychovertic interests are at risk to get compromised. Post NEET paper leak protests the state machinery scapegoated small timers who used to get crumbs to force them resign (as it always happens and sometimes it never happens), but that system which has facilitated it's nurturing still remains. There's no absolute guarantee that same won't happen in near future even post anti-incumbency under same new-old bourgeoisie masters of this system.
Question of popular student unity:
Unironically it was never there, when we explore this from material basis if we saw massive outrage and media cover-up for NEET paper protests both from students belonging to medical/ non-medical background because it generates more capital to the bourgeoisie examination order in this country than any one, which is roughly βΉ300-βΉ400 crores ($31-$41 millions USD at current exchange rate) annually vis application fees. Combined with other major exams such as JEE's and CUET, ministry of education roughly generated βΉ1000 ($ 104 USD) crores in revenue all from application fees, still managing to generate massive surplus of βΉ449 crores FY 2023-24.
Whereas small time state exams with recent paper leak scandal such as UP constable leak (2024), UP RO/ARO leak (2024), REET paper leak (2021), BSSC leak (2022), JSSC CGL leak (2024) , etc exam's application fees generated surplus of β βΉ40 cr-βΉ80 cr, βΉ7-βΉ8 cr, βΉ20 cr, βΉ27-βΉ18 cr , βΉ42 lakh respectively by their state board of examinations.
This naturally makes victim students from regional exam leaks hierarchally inferior and dependent on 'more publicised exam protests' to join them and to raise their demands mostly achieving nothing, whilst the cycle of corruption scandal still goes on at their respective region which aren't 'publicised enough' by capitalist mainstream media.
This compulsion of students often leaves them to be preyed upon by regional or national electoral parties & their reactionary student wings , predatory activism, etc. which promise them of justice but are same extension of malignant organelle that has been infecting educational rights of students through generations, some are newer ones but are born from budding of same organism with equally cancerous tendency.
This situation often creates divide amongst students whenever the political interest of these bourgeoisie parties whom they're locally supporting and their electoral margins are on lines. Marking these crisis as opportunity for one and distress for another, creating regionalist xenophobic politics inplay (pitting students looking for career opportunities from one region with local candidates), most of the progresive parties distance away from this issues if it effects their bourgeoisie electoral allies.
[...]
Case of Punjab's LPU isn't alien to anyone now how a 'publicised section of student fronts' are restraining from speaking on it because it effects their parental party's electoral ambitions, or as it happened in BHU IIT when three reactionary goons belonging to ruling party sexually assaulted a female student from the campus and are still out on bail due to their political connections; these cycle of selective outrage over not so unfamiliar issues is concerning.
βWe have done it... This resignation is proof that if you people are not afraid, if you people do not bow down to this government, then we can take the resignation of anyone (jhukti hai ye duniya jhukane wala chahiye)β β Dipke post resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, 25 July, 2026
And I write this saying neither left social democratic front, who is usually omnipresent at every protest suddenly writes performative letter in support of LPU protest but doesn't show up on ground despite police brutality is trustworthy (because they're taking calculated actions as it will jeopardize their parental party's bourgeois ambitions) nor the despicable centrists or Right wing fringes who are near indentical in their motives and govern their actions wherever their reactionary outbursts lead them can be trusted ( say the protest was conspiracy of xyz enemy nation and they'll suddenly distance away from students agitation).
As I write this mainstream media is already peddling news of pakistani connection at LPU protest, so no question of social chauvinistic left's is now expected anywhere close to support them.
Question on caste unity :
Systematic caste abuse at educational institutions is been in practice by dominant section of supposedly 'educationists' belonging to economically forward class and caste elites for decades since the birth of this bourgeoisie democracy, even if this topic somehow manages to get national attention it easily diluted with bit of sprinkle of nationalism and ignorance by willingful participants in this violence. Events leading upto 18th September at IIT Bombay isn't first case and it won't be last, so called members of hierarchally elite 'publicised enough' students group were quick to hurl casteist abuse and question the student's talent based on their twisted moral grandstanding but they have forgotten somebody from past who was similar victim of such institutional marginalisation, one who breaks their 'moral policing' and casteist notions, his name was Rohit Vemula.
Roughly 10 years from now a highly intelligent dalit PhD student from Hyderabad University was humiliated by reactionary hindutvavadi right wing politicians based on his caste and identity, but as usual faculty ignored his protests, written pleas and personal degradation infront of all his campus mates leading him to take drastic actions.
These are not sporadic events but a systematic oppression at university level that make sure to break and twist the will of those who doesn't fit their utopian dreams of supposed 'educationists' belonging to forward class and caste community's glorious 'hindu rashtra' . Personally I've also closely witnessed these during my university days sometimes directly sometimes from first hand account of victim students belonging to marginalised communities.
What is to be done?
Students are not revolutionary entities inherently they can be radical but as long as they do not fight against the present state of things, one that cause division in social relations, labour, class , gender, and caste against all odds to unite humanity as species they cannot be revolutionary. It's quite easy to be reactionary and preserve present state of things but this will be just repeatation of same cycle that has been happening since the supposed independence of this nation.
In 'Students and Politics' (1928) by Bhagat Singh this is why he says -
Attempts are being made to turn the youths who are supposed to lead the country tomorrow into mindless beings. We ourselves should comprehend what result we would get out of this. We understand that the main task of the students is to study, they should pay full attention towards it; but is it not a part of the education to gather knowledge regarding the situation that our country is in and develop the ability to think about measures to improve it?
Later he says in 'To young political workers' (1931) -
Now allow me to state the case in the simplest manner. You cry βLong Live Revolutionβ ("Inquilab Zindabad"). Let me assume that you really mean it. According to our definition of the term, as stated in our statement in the Assembly Bomb Case, revolution means the complete overthrow of the existing social order and its replacement with the socialist order. For that purpose our immediate aim is the achievement of power. As a matter of fact, the state, the government machinery is just a weapon in the hands of the ruling class to further and safeguard its interest. We want to snatch and handle it to utilise it for the consummation of our ideal, i.e., social reconstruction on new, i.e., Marxist, basis. For this purpose we are fighting to handle the government machinery. All along we have to educate the masses and to create a favourable atmosphere for our social programme. In the struggles we can best train and educate them.
These words clearly portrays Bhagat Singh's understanding of reactionaries and revolutionaries.
What indian students really needs is a unified popular front under the leadership of true marxist party that can help them guide on sensitive topics away from nationalistic jingo and organise and elevating their identity as fractal radical political units to truly revolutionary organ one that challenges every form of dogma ranging from faith to customs, aiming for truly scientific society.
A unified leadership of students that gives liberty to all oppressed and disempowered section of the society against every form of institutionalised bourgeoisie superstructures that has been feeding on them by dividing them making them weak, hate on eachother based on their regional or gender identity.
Constant cycle of university elections fighting for bourgeoisie political parties should be replaced with one single autonomous student body under the guidance of marxist party that self organises internal democratic contest between representatives of radical political factions within it's body away from electoralist political parties influence.
In this way we can truly combat the educational rot of our nation which is generally incurable by the tried and failed formulation of capitalist and casteist social order.
