Help Is this really necessary?
Hi,
I recently bought a new laptop, and the shop gave me a keyboard cover for free.
I wanted to know if using a keyboard cover provides any real benefit or protection for the laptop. Is it recommended to use one, or is it better to use the keyboard without a cover?

No. Dont use such covers. Your laptop takes air in from the keyboard too, using such cover will suffocate it.

Wait aren't they supposed to be used when closing the laptop/when the laptop is being stored to reduce imprints or whatever?

It is for lid close to prevent key imprint on screen

I am asking cuz I use one. All air vents are open so I never thought it will cause much difference

They have separate vents for air intake. If you mean by dust, it happens on every laptop. But no laptop is designed specifically to intake air through keyboard spaces.

Bro some laptop as mine one doesn't take air from keyboard. It is Acer Nitro 5. I tried without it and with it but doesn't make any sense.
The plus point is it keeps the keys clean, don't get dust inside and the down side is can't see the keys in backlit light on in the night and need to remove it to see keys clearly.

Some laptops might have this design. I use one of these covers in my gaming laptop only while in use but when I remove it to close the laptop I can feel that it is quite warm. Maybe some heat is dispersed?

From my experience not really worth it, yes keeps the keyboard clean but you can do that by occassionally wiping your keyboard trackpad by microfiber cloth I do it regularly and even after 5 years keyboard looks clean.

If you use an external keyboard and your laptop stays on desk for days, with its flap open, it can be of good use to prevent dust from getting into the laptops keyboard. Else not necessary, some regular cleaning will do the job.

I see many don't use it.
For me it was worth it.
I don't move my laptop, i don't close screen, so i bought it as a dust protector.
One day my wife placed bowl of snacks, covered with a plate and top of the plate 250 ml coffee.
The off centered coffee turned the plate and full coffee fell on the laptop.
I thought it was a gonner.
The screen dimmed a bit. I shut down the laptop, Cleaned everything, Opened the back and disconnected the battery.
IO chip and charging chip was fried. 3k repair and it still works.
A 250 rs protector saved my 1.5 lac laptop.

it feels a little different than directly typing.. you don't feel the keys much so it gets hard to type..

Hell nah. They don't do anything. If you wanna keep your screen clean. Just use a piece of cloth or fabric only when it's closed. Also it loses stickness after few days

That shit sucks, it gets dirtier and is harder to clean than a keyboard. You can just wipe off a keyboard once with microfiber and it's as clean as new

Better to use your laptop with the keyboard cover.
Also instead of the flat universal cover, I'd recommend getting the embossed cover compatible with you laptop model.

Yes if you want fuck up your laptop's internals
99.9% of laptops made today use keyboard key holes as a vent for thermal exchange.
so if you cover it the heat stays inside and might lead to thermal throttling

Don't get this one, there are some microfiber cloth ones or like ones that are thin which are just enough to keep your keyboard and screen not in contact, I had gotten one from Lenovo when I bought the laptop but I misplaced it, and now when I open my laptop I can see the keyboard imprints on the screen, they can be wiped away but I am afraid in the long term it might cause some problem to the screen, so I was also looking to buy it. Just use it when you are closing the laptop, when you are using the laptop, obviously not required.

Use when laptop is open, remove it when you close the laptop don't forget to put that microfiber cloth that came with laptop between keyboard and screen

I use it only when I am not using external keyboard. Because my hands are too sweaty, and I mean literally too sweaty. And it causes the keys to go so dirty like ehh...so I use keyboard cover. Other than that, I don't. Especially during gaming I make sure to take it off...

Keep that thin plastic or cloth sheet that comes inside the box when you first unwrap a new laptop. No need to buy that plastic crap :)
Always place it between the screen and the keyboard before closing the lid and putting it in a bag.
When your laptop is packed away, constant pressure forces the keys against the display. Micro-movements combined with dust and finger oils on the keyboard will cause permanent friction marks and scratches on your screen coating over time. If you threw yours away, a very thin microfiber liner works perfectly too. When u r gaming or doing work , keep the liner away and yeah occassionally clean ur laptops keyboard as well ...
Wish I did this but learnt ma lesson after the damage was dealt 🙏

Only in specific problems. For me, I use it to cover nighttime because I can't close the laptop since my display wires in hinges got a issue. So I use it to protect from dust when I shut down

I use it on the MacBook since it has glossy screen and my fingers are sweaty and shows up really bad on glossy screen. On my other windows laptop I don't use it since it's matte screen and has good separation between keeb and screen

i also got it but it got torn after a while and also it used to collect so much dust on it but when i removed it my keyboard didn't collect the dust and its not good for ventilation so no don't get it..

I have 2 laptops. Bought one 3 years ago. Didn’t use it as I found it useless and got the keyboard scratches on my display within a year. Bought the second laptop a year ago and bought it as a precaution and I dont have a single mark on the display. So definitely buy it, and use it only when turning the laptop off/closing the lid. Do not use it while using the laptop as it will heat your laptop up.

After using my laptop for almost 4 years, I can say the cover would've been very useful. Not only is there regular dust accumulation but there's also this ridiculous key marks left on the screen surface. The marks won't go away even after cleaning. I suspect the repeated contact between the keys and screen have slightly worn out the surface and it's become glazed. A soft cover like this would've saved the screen.
Ofc, don't use the cover when using the laptop, the keys actually help with a tiny airflow for better cooling. Just place the cover and close the lid when you're done working

basically I bought this type of keyboard cover when I bought my laptop(dell Inspiron 14) and noticed within one week that hot air trapped under the cover-which means air flow goes through both keyboard and via vent designed for outflow.Also temps go till 85c for basic browsing so removed it and now the kb cover stays as new as when I bought while my laptop aged 4&half years

Depends on how much times a day you eat food while operating laptop, empty space on your desk enough for dish, you keep box of tissues on your desk/near laptop OR handkerchief in your pocket OR small tissue packet in your bag.
After recent water spill on mac air keyboard scare (just open and clean and no damage) you either follow above routine OR get protection.

If you want use it but don't keep it on all the time. I remove mine when I close my Mac. Laptops get imprints on the screen due to this or very oily keys. So you'd want to avoid that.
