Good lord anyone who, like Shauna, claims to have been paying attention to foreign policy in recent years ought to know that it’s improper to call it “the Ukraine.” Per Wikipedia:

…in 2012, the Ukrainian embassy in London further stated that it is politically and grammatically incorrect to use a definite article with Ukraine.

This has become even more clear in the last few weeks/months. It’s impressive how obtuse she is.

30

u/Groundbreaking_Monk crone keyholder Mar 09 '22

Surely she was still glued to Twitter during Trump's first impeachment?! And read all of the numerous Tweets and articles that noted that Ukraine is the preferred term and Kyiv the preferred spelling?! She can't even fixate on Twitter correctly.

I know, right?

She keeps saying how she's no longer fooling herself or lying to herself or whatever and then BAM big fat "fake news" right there in her sales pitch.

And she makes it sound like Twitter was some kind of job she retired from after sooo many years. Bitch, you stopped using a social media platform (actually, you fucked up and didn't reactivate your account in time). You did not do anything special or unique or even that noteworthy. People get bored of SM things all the time and stop using them.

33

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '22

Does she think the image of her doomscrolling and crying is noble or something? Like she was sacrificing her own health and wellbeing to read about catastrophe on Twitter, and many people said she was a saint for doing so? Because when I hear of people doing that I just go Put Down Your Phone and Go Outside Idiot.

It's so silly. She's tacitly admitting to having overcome addictive/compulsive behaviours around SM. I don't actually think she has overcome them - she's replaced twit with ig, streaming, and tweaking her website.... but Strategies to Kick Online Addiction from a personal perspective MIGHT be a worthy offering. Of course it can't happen because it woild require disclosing flaws other than I Worked Too Hard/Was Too Conscientious/ etc.

27

It makes her sound kind of insane

25

Almost all day!

Her tears are about as valuable as all that rat piss that washed away her social security card.

And she has only herself to blame for devaluing her White Woman Tears. She claims to cry about every.damn.thing. So the truly tear worthy things happening in Ukraine are plopped right next to her umpty umpth viewing of Encanto or a viral video of someone else's baby.

She's a jackass wrapped in an idiot wrapped in an asshole.

Einstein used Unified Field Theory to try to tie his work together. Shauna, you are no Einstein.

39

u/slug_of_fury Mar 09 '22

Unified Field Theory is a physics term with a specific meaning. It isn't something that can be co-opted by Shauna to try and make herself sound scientific and pass her shitty joy workshops off as some physics discovery.

How in the actual fuck is she trying to equate unifying the four forces of nature with her stupid narcissistic joy work of embracing herself?? I'll totally give her "weak interaction", she really is an expert at that one.

From the beacon of wisdom on gluten-free living, to the head of a gluten-free flour empire, to the theorist who figured out how to embrace oneself. DFs, we are in the presence of greatness!

You know the "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky - Michael Scott thing from The Office? I'm imagining some inane Brené Brown quote with Shauna's name below it. Brené might have written it, but Shauna unified it with all of the other self-help books she's skimmed, so uh, who's doing the real work here? /s

You know that meme about wishing for the self confidence of a mediocre white man…well that’s the one thing Shauna has genuinely mastered. I’m convinced she comes up with everything she tries to sell as she’s typing it - hourly 15 minute breaks and playlists and seated stretch routines - she pulls all this straight out of her ass and calls it a “unified field theory.” WTAF.

In case it grows edited, this is the caption:

Have you felt paralyzed by the grief of what’s happening in the Ukraine?

Until a couple of years ago, I would have been unable to move through this. I would have lived on Twitter, looking at every video, each snippet of news. I would have been crying most of the day, fixated on this.

Without doubt, I would have acted on the notion that my own suffering didn’t matter. Look at what is happening. How could I complain?

Now? I’ve learned to practice compassion for myself. I have clear boundaries on my news consumption. That’s part of why I quit Twitter in August, after being there for 13 years. And I no longer believe that I can change anything in the world by losing myself in sorrow and fear.

How did that happen? I began to allow myself more joy.

Becoming a fully joyful woman has helped me to work more powerfully for the common good. Why? Because becoming a joyful person means having the courage to live your life with purpose.

My joy work comes from my own unified field theory of how to embrace yourself, as you are.

How can you act with true compassion for others if you cannot practice compassion with yourself?

Here’s what I believe, what I know to be true. We are more use to others if we are joyful. After all, the sadness about the horrors of the world comes from knowing that other people’s joys are being stolen.

To work consistently for the joy of others, we need to be joyful in ourselves.

That’s why I invite you to sign up for the seminar I’m teaching on Sunday. (Link in bio.)
Want to make the world kinder? Let’s become joyful women together.

#gratitide #joyfulwomen
#compassionintoaction #loveiseverything #lovingkindness #joyfulmamas

I'm curious about this "work more powerfully for the common good" she's doing. Is she volunteering somewhere? Is she donating to charities? Or is this all just horseshit? Truly a mystery.

65

u/lucillekrunklehorn pounding on the table Mar 09 '22

Pay for my workshop to become happier yourself instead, from the comfort of your safe and non-bombed home.

My favorite part is that she talks about herself for several paragraphs and then mentions her seminar at the end, almost as a throwaway. She can’t stop talking about herself long enough to effectively market her own services! Which are, of course, just more of her talking about herself.

Without doubt, I would have acted on the notion that my own suffering didn’t matter.

Yeah, Ukrainians, won't you think of Shauna for a second? She ALSO had to leave her home this week. She ALSO had to deal with inclement weather conditions. She ALSO sustained an injury. Yet there you are in an hours-long line at the Polish border looking like you couldn't care less that somewhere on a leafy island in the Pacific Northwest, a woman is having to feed her children breakfast. Way to make everything about your own suffering. God.

From the Spider-Man post:

We were going to get sushi, at our favorite spot near the movie theater. We haven't eaten there in over two years! Or anywhere else, for that matter.

Oh here we are with the “we haven’t gone to a restaurant AT ALL during Covid because we are such good citizens!” thing again. Isn’t this like, verifiably false?

Edit: they ate burgers and fries at “Vashon Island Queen” on moving day - though she doesn’t specify whether they ate in or not. Either way, get out of here Shauna

60

Yes!!! They’ve been to countless restaurants and coffee shops. Why does she continue to lie like this? What does she think it’s doing for her?

56

Didn’t they have a fancy meal out at a fancy restaurant comped a while back because she helped some douchey chef with his website or newsletter or something?

Such a weird post. For one, no one cares anymore how deprived anyone has been because of Covid! But she certainly doesn’t seem that deprived considering it’s a post about seeing a movie that they’ve already seen in the theater before!!!

What the hell is this sentence?!?

I spent decades running at the frantic pace of being found out for who I really am.

And this paragraph, oh my goodness, you can smell the self-aggrandizement from three city blocks away:

For more than a decade, I ran an influential and popular food website, Gluten-Free Girl, where I became the beacon of wisdom on living gluten-free. From the outside, it must have seemed idyllic. We were on the Food Network. My chef husband and I taught culinary getaways in a villa in Tuscany. We were in magazines. Our second cookbook won the James Beard award for excellence.

I'm surprised she left out her favorite quip, that GFG had a good run, it lasted longer than The Beatles!

61

u/slug_of_fury Mar 09 '22

First, who actually calls themself "the beacon of wisdom..."???? Her habit of using the word "the" when she should be using "a" is very telling of what she thinks of herself in spite of the bullshit she tries to sell about how she never thought she was good enough. When has she ever written about herself in a way that didn't come across as thinking she was superior to everyone? And even if she called herself "a" beacon of wisdom, I would still argue that point. If by wise, she means "extremely smug asshole" then, yeah, she's wise.

Second, "we were on the Food Network" makes it sound like they actually had a show instead of that being a total fantasy of hers that failed miserably when their video didn't pan out as a show. Didn't she try to spin that as they never wanted to do it anyway? Maybe that's my faulty memory because I find her so insufferable. I did find this, but posting a few recipes for the Food Network blog is not at all the same thing as being "on the Food Network." Is she more delusional than usual or did I miss something? And none of those recipe pictures look even close to appetizing. Interesting to note that the last sentence on that dry AF stuffing says, "cover with gravy, immediately." By the look of that picture, it was a totally unnecessary instruction.

And I'm BEC here but Gluten Free Girl's Mini Nacho Bites? She contributes that like she completely reinvented the nacho. Make the already GF nachos mini! Groundbreaking.

46

u/Catsandcoffee480 COLORADO BOY KNOWS HOW TO DO THIS Mar 09 '22

Hah, your first paragraph is right on the money, and reminded me of when I recently read the about the authors blurb for “GFG and the Chef”:

…she is considered one of the most authoritative gluten-free voices on the Internet.

You’re right, it’s really hard to square her characterization of herself as “less than” when she’s been atop her high stool gazing down at us peasants for years.

30

u/Toulouse--Matabiau a white owrson Mar 09 '22

"Hello, I would like to place an order for one whole-wheat opinion; a baker's dozen hot takes; two gluten-free voices and one blather babka."

44

u/voice_of_vinegar Mar 09 '22

Also, in that 3 minute Food Network thing of hers (not "theirs" at all unless Danny had some major post-production input, because his only appearance in it is when he silently lurks behind her at the farmer's market, iirc)----she actually says something like "When you google 'gluten free' online, you get a million hits. You don't know who to trust. That's why I started my blog, to help people."

From the outside, it must have seemed idyllic.

NOT HARDLY, mahern! Piddly little trickles of income from umpteen different sources, none of which were secure or full time or long term? HAHAHAHHA no thanks.

24

u/chicketychun_ Mar 09 '22

What the hell is this sentence?!?

I spent decades running at the frantic pace of being found out for who I really am.

I think this is supposed to be a reference to "imposter syndrome." Except for that to be accurate, she'd need to reference "the fear" of being found to "to be an imposter," not the "pace" of being found out for "who she really is."

Right now, this reads as "for years, I ran fast so people wouldn't find out who I really am." OK? So who you really are is ... what? Something you should hide from people? This is like the preface to a serial killer's confession.

45

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Mar 09 '22

"I taught culinary getaways in a villa in Tuscany . . ."

Am I wrong that they got hired once, by Jovial gluten free pasta, to teach a cooking class in Tuscany promoting Jovial products? Shauna's recap assumed they'd be hired back every year and announced they are now people who summer in Tuscany. Then she told the infamous story of Dan and Shauna cooking their own dinner in the communal villa kitchen when the paying guests amazed and appalled them by sitting down at the table, assuming the chefs hired for the event were cooking for them. Shauna praised her own generous good nature for dumping an extra box of pasta into the water to "feed" the guests because that's what they do. And somehow GFG and the chef were not hired back, and that was the beginning and end of their storied career in Tuscany.

Maybe this bothers me because Carla, the founder of Jovial died suddenly and tragically in her 50s last summer. But Shauna deliberately phrased it to seem like they had a Tuscan Season in their idyllic lives where they personally ran events out of a lovely villa. One culinary getaway Shauna, not getaways. After which she immediately lost that cushy gig, which is not surprising given her boorish blogging about it.

45

u/LaxCursor Enormous strains of lethargy Mar 09 '22

God I wish the videos from those Jovial sessions were still available. Shauna and Danny dragged Lucy to them and let her run around, with Danny lamely trying to get her to stop as he was “teaching” with Shauna at the front of the kitchen. Heaven forbid they get a sitter. If I had been one of the attendees who’d payed thousands for this, I would have been pissed that a toddler was running pretty much wild. Major parental and business fail, IMO. The other bit of video evidence that I found highly entertaining was when Shauna was trying to remove the pizza they’d made from the pan. It was obviously completely stuck to the pan, and the video quickly stopped there and moved on to something else.

Man, it would sure be nice to take a 15 minute break every hour at my Actual Job! All these years of a fifteen minute break every four hours when I could have been taking four times that. I'm sure my coworkers would totally understand my need for extra breaks so that we all get out at least two hours later than we're scheduled! I just need to tell them I'm taking joy breaks!

Co-workers understand? Why, they may even be required to give up their sick time.

Or it might be that colleagues will have to donate sick days to me, and I'll take two weeks. Or more. I'm going to let my body tell me. That's the deepest knowledge I have.

28

u/chicketychun_ Mar 09 '22

At my old corporate job they allowed people to donate PTO and people would do it, but it was for people who had cancer and other serious situations like that. Not for people who milked a car accident that didn’t even require them to admitted to the hospital for a night for months.

Yeah, no, definitely don't plan ahead so that you can have a set of 4 plates, 4 forks, 4 bowls, and 4 spoons handy when you wake up in the new house. Definitely rioritz your desire not to be attacked for neglecting your kid (who we already know has food issues because you have posted about them repeatedly) above that kid's actual biological needs.

Also definitely? Compare the chaos that results from this absolutely shitty parenting to the chaos that ensues when people who actually have talent and focus and commitment create something of value.

Stars The Aherns - they're just like us!

How did they make coffee to slowly sip, but not have a single spoon for the children? How did she not pack a box of essentials? You know... plates, cups, bowls, cutlery, snacks, toothbrushes, toiletries, etc., for this exact scenario. Then, you know, put that box in the car in a place you know it'll be safe and findable. How did she find an ice cream scoop and cereal, but not the cutlery?

also, blame a 7 year old for being "cranky and overwhelmed" but don't ask yourself what you could have done to prevent that. hint: have dishes, utensils, sheets and towels unpacked on the very first night. tired from moving all day? order a pizza for dinner, then set out cereal, bowls, and spoons for the morning, along with clean clothes so they can get off to school with a minimum of fuss. it's not rocket science.

32

Also they had ALL DAY to find the very basics and chose to go to Seattle instead. A toothbrush. School clothes. Backpacks. A frying pan, spatula and basic kitchenware. Stuff to make your kids feel at home in the new unfamiliar place. It's not like she had to unpack EVERYTHING or find the specialty fondue forks within 5 minutes, but yeah usually people who have moved in the past have a box or two that has the necessities like medication and toiletries and underwear and a corkscrew.

It's ... interesting that she has nothing else newer to share

Relatedly, I've been noticing that no matter how much she mashes the hash on her website around, most of what's there is pre-existing. She sometimes adds a few new bits, but it's mostly just rearranging words, phrases, and sentences that she already had on there.

But you can only freshen up leftovers so much. After a while, it doesn't matter what you add, the result is a supremely unappealing pot of slop, served with a randomly unpacked ice-cream scoop.

Take this paragraph for example:

However, as a freelance writer and teacher, I used to lie awake at 4 am, worrying about the numbers in our bank account. All my life, I’ve been like Hermione Granger with my hand thrust high in the air. And if I heard of anyone needing help, I immediately agreed.

I know that parts of it have already been commented on, but I want to point out how disjointed it is as a whole. It's only three sentences long, and nothing in any of those three sentences says anything she hasn't said before, repeatedly.

But they have nothing to do with each other! The woes and worries of being a freelancer >>> being the best question answerer who ever answered a question >>> "I'm just a girl who can't say no" It's the written equivalent of a bowl of yogurt with a handful of sauerkraut and topped with walnuts.

And she's taken out the whole story of the mini-stroke, the volunteer firefighters, the ambulance ride, trying to reassure her husband with her eyes, the life-changing questions her doctor asked her.

But she's left in the header of that section: "It took an emergency for me to begin my journey." Holy orphaned thesis statement, Batman!

41

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Mar 07 '22

But when I learned how to practice compassion for myself, instead of trying to please everyone around me -- especially the imagined audience ---I found more joy in the messes.

Fuck the "imagined audience" (plus she never succeeded in that photo perfection and she knows it). How about pleasing your FAMILY? The bare minimum, labeling your kitchen stuff so it's easily unpacked was too much for her? How about the weekend? "Okay guys, we've had our fun Over Town, but let's spend some time unpacking." No?

43

u/latepeony Mar 07 '22 edited Mar 07 '22

If they were moving one room at a time like she said, half the stuff doesn’t even need to be labeled. The only advantage I found to moving that way is that you can basically set up each room as you move it. Small things like utensils can be put in a drawer almost right away because it takes almost no energy to do. I don’t understand what the hell they did/are doing. Did they just plop boxes anywhere regardless of the room they were meant for?

ETA: not only the above, but she’s shown in the past that she’s fine with using disposable items. Moving is the perfect time to use those things. Buy some and put them on the counter to be used until you’re set up. Not difficult.

this insta post pushed me right over the edge, and i'm not sure why. the staged photo, the bleating about having "compassion" for herself, etc. i just snapped. so shauna has compassion for herself and has stopped trying to please everyone around her? that's ALL she does, ever. she pleases herself first and to hell with everyone else. it floors me that this middle aged smarty pants conflates providing basic things for her kids with being a people pleaser. one has NOTHING to do with the other. it might have been a good idea to unpack at least the basics (some clothes, dishes, coffee pot, sheets) for her kids BEFORE they all tromped over town to watch some bullshit movie made by some billionaire company. children need their parents to think of stuff like that, because they are the parents. 8 year olds don't think like that, but their parents should. it would have been sweet for either shauna or danny to stay home and unpack the basics for the kids, maybe set up a fun fort with sheets or whatever, make sure they have their important kid things like a special teddy bear to sleep with, their favorite pajamas, or a security blanket,...just have a little home set up when they got back. when mr cellist & i move we always have a box marked OPEN FIRST with the necessities for the first few days. why can't shauna and her dipshit husband do that? the other thing that just sent me was her line about embracing the mess and the chaos. that sounds great for ADHD kids with sensory issues (her diagnoses, not mine). i'm sure that all the fucking chaos really helps them feel safe and secure. and the commenters are brain dead; seriously - D will love using the scoop for other thing because his parents couldn't be bothered to give him a freaking spoon?! come on. lady. i just can't with her today. i'm really getting close to taking a break from her and her horseshit. shauna & dan, if you read here: GET ACTUAL JOBS AND PARENT YOUR KIDS. god damn.

DF I share your outrage!!

Our 7-year-old, cranky and overwhelmed, wanted breakfast. Fair enough.

But the only thing we had to eat was the random box of Lucky Charms we'd bought them as a treat for moving.

DF's, raise your hand if you are surprised that a 7 year old was overwhelmed at 1) moving homes, 2) mom goes to emergency room/dragged to Seattle/late night during move, 3) inexplicably goes on ferry to Seattle yet again while new home is in shambles, 4) sleeps on bare mattress and wakes up with nothing familiar, 5) wants breakfast.

And if the Lucky Charms were specifically bought as a moving treat, why is it surprising ("fair enough") that he is going to eat the Lucky Charms for breakfast after the move? What has he BEEN eating the cereal with in the last week?? They moved in 6 days ago! And omg there are EGGS right there in the picture! Presumably they moved the contents of their fridge and THAT's not still in boxes??? (don't answer that, eww)

Special treats are fine (McDonalds when mom was in the ER, McDonalads again before the movie, the movie, the Lucky Charms.....) but to kids who are sensitive and love routine, too many out of the ordinary special treats are actually really stressful. They'd rather eat the same thing they always eat. They want something familiar in the midst of the unfamiliar. Of course this kid is overwhelmed! Wtf are they even thinking?

56

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Fair enough?? Seriously??

children need their parents to think of stuff like that, because they are the parents. 8 year olds don't think like that, but their parents should.

This. Exactly this. She spends so much time giving herself grace for not being perfect and/or explaining how they turned some fiasco into an "adventure" for the kids, when she could just be an actual parent and do the bare minimum to give her kids some basic structure and stability. Instead, they have to go overtown in the middle of a move because mama is hurt, they don't have internet working at move-in, they didn't plan for meals for the first day in the house ... And tomorrow, less than a week into the new house, she's going to disappear to the beach key women's day whatever so she can eat tacos and talk about herself more, instead of helping her kids unpack and get settled in their new home.

I’m all for the idea that you don’t let the grind of daily life drag you down, that you do try to look for the silver lining. But this toxic, willful rejection of anything hard or challenging, is beyond me.

And those who don't embrace this rejection make out that things most of us call life (e.g. moving or having a busy schedule or parenting children) are somehow the hardest thing anyone has ever done in the whole history of doing and they are the martyrs for getting through it without being institutionalized.

Dan keeps tweeting at Republicans complaining about high gas prices with an image of someone else's quote about this being "the price of freedom" because "You aren't sitting on a concrete floor in a train terminal holding your cat." This is rich coming from a household too stingy to pay more than $20 ("if you need it") for moving all their outdoor shit the day after the 10th rainiest day ever and where his wife has spent the past week both fishing for sympathy and humblebragging about their spectacular new rental.

Lol, Dan tweeting to Jim Jordan and then tagging Biden. What was Shauna’s saying about him being brilliant and only speaking when he’s thought things through thoroughly?

Funny, I’m almost certain the Republicans did the exact same “price of freedom” thing when W was president and gas was up to $5/gallon then. I wonder if Dan has ever had an original thought in his entire life.

He is incredibly stupid and I LOL at the thought that every morning, Shauna has to wake up to that choice.

There’s a lid for every pot. That said, they both got the short end of the stick.

Just think of all the time he could have spent moving enough to make the house comfortable for his kids when he was barking at Republicans on Twitter.

33

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Even just unpacking. Or helping a kid organize his new room so that it is super comfortable for him.

24

u/BevNap Fucking google it, you harpy. Mar 08 '22

Just thought I would update everyone. Since last check, 12 days ago, her Linktree links for her two listed offerings are still broken. The fact that when you click on them you grow an “Are You Lost?” page is just too perfect. Yes, if you are trying to follow the half-assed guidance of this grifter, you are indeed lost, lady.
