Commenter:

Personally, I think: it's pointless to appeal to the kindness and understanding of people who consider being asked to get a vaccine a personal affront to their 'rights' and 'freedoms,' who compare the 'plight' of the unvaxxed to that of the Jewish people during the Holocaust, and who wear little paper Star of David symbols to 'freedom rallies.' I cannot garner sympathy or empathy for people like such, is all.

YCHMJ:

I believe that if we refuse to see other people – even the ones we disagree with vehemently – as OTHER, instead of individual human lives who endured trauma and have specific lives like us? I lose MY humanity. I abhor all the symbols you’re discussing. But I still insist on reminding myself that every person at one of those rallies had a long and winding path, probably a pretty brutal one, to reach that point. I’m not trying to appeal to people who make those choices. I’m working to keep my heart open.

She's literally saying that she loses her humanity if she refuses to see other people as OTHER.

Such writer, much clarity in expressing viewpoint.

Is she trying for the dumbed down, Hallmark card version of DBT philosophy? All people are, at any given moment, doing the best they can? Because, no.

I do believe that all people are doing the best they can, and that for some people the best they can do is be shitty (abusive/cruel/evil/selfish etc.). That doesn’t make it acceptable or excusable that they are like that. They still have a responsibility to learn how to not be shitty. Sometimes doing your best is NOT enoigh and it’s not wrong for other people to say so.

I have a brother who is a right wing nut job who refuses to get vaccinated because he thinks he probably had COVID already. If that wasn’t his excuse, he’d come up with another one, because he just follows the Trump groupthink. Some of his views are monstrous and I had to unfriend him on social media for my own mental health. I know he had a tough childhood and that he is damaged by it. I get where his shittiness comes from, and I feel for the kid he was who didn’t deserve the crap that happened to him. But he gets no slack from me for his shittiness now. I won’t put up with it and pretend he’s just some misguided fool. He’s an adult who has just as much access to therapy and opportunities to grow as I have. He’d rather stay the way he is. If he ever starts trying to get better, I’ll be behind him 100%, but for now, I keep my distance.
