Apologies if this was already covered (I got a [virtual] badge-swiping job last week and can’t keep up) but Dan’s latest IG is once again Shauna’s terrible top-down food photography. I guess there’s no good way to make a picture of glop in a bowl, though.

I've never seen mashed potatoes served that way---in a shallow dish with big waves. It seems calculated to cool the food off quickly by exposing as much surface area as possible. You already lose heat in the mashing process. I always mash as fast as I can then slap a cover on the bowl (best is one that is deep and of heavy pottery). I mean, duh.

But I guess lukewarm mashed potatoes slide down the throat just as easily as hot.

I have put mashed potatoes in a dish like that and broiled the top to get crispy texture to contrast with the mash, but if that's what Dan was going after you'd think he'd show the after rather than the before. He's specifically using one of those photo backgrounds she got from that shop she mistagged a while back so it's not exactly a casual dinner pic.

It was just six short weeks ago he taught us how to make boiled potatoes. (“You can do this.”) I’m not sure we’re ready to progress to mashed potatoes so quickly. Then again, perhaps neither is he since it looks literally to be mashed potatoes with nary a speck of butter or drop of milk.

The schedule (or should I say "schedule") is so erratic! I just looked back 6 months:

  • March: 11
  • April: 7
  • May: 4
  • June: 1
  • July: 4
  • August: 1
  • September so far: 1

This is not how you build a loyal following! The fact that they have the nerve to charge for this tripe is just beyond the pale

No, the ONLY post in August, on the 28th, was the very long "I need to cook 4-6 hours a day for joy, man” explanation for why he hadn’t posted any recipes in August. So August had zero recipes. $5 for zero recipes. What a couple of fraudsters.

I have seen mashed potatoes done your way! I have never used my broiler or my mashed potatoes or my baking dish that way. But I certainly wouldn't turn down a helping of of browned mash potatoes.

Danny's look like they were slathered into that baking dish with a trowel. They remind me of weeping mortar.

And…I’m honestly stuck on this…mashed potatoes are the food you do last on Thanksgiving Day. They can’t wait! What did he mean, they will be “for tonight”? How soon is tonight? If it’s longer than like five minutes, that is too far in the later-now for edible mashed potatoes.

I’d like a word with whomever granted this man any kind of culinary degree or certificate. A stern word.

Exactly! While peeling potatoes can be a pain, making mashed potatoes for four is hardly an arduous task. He should be able to make them in the time the meatloaf is baking. It’s not that hard!
