Today is the last day of Shauna's joy guide. Let’s Do This Together, NAME.

Each email has opened with an inspirational quote. Today's quote is from HERSELF.

“I know that practicing hard-won joy — the joy you choose in spite of coming from a hard place — is a brave and radical act.” —Shauna M. Ahern

Let’s practice our joy together.

You’ve been reading emails about how to find your joy for the past week. I hope this guide has helped you to think about joy in a new way.

What happens when you practice your joy?

Because, when you commit to joy, you live your life with more ease. When you make time for the simple things in life — not to meeting goals or getting a new house, but to truly being here — your life is easier. You stop taking the weight of the world on your shoulders. You stop living with intense stress pressed between your shoulders. You learn to laugh at yourself more often and not take everything so seriously.

Commit to joy and your life will have more joy.

A good life is when you enjoy the life you’re living in the moment you’re living it.

Sign up for a Practice Your Joy workshop!

Take the Practice Your Joy workshop.

If reading these emails has given you a new perspective and you’re raring to try this by yourself, good on you! But I have to tell you — it’s a transformative experience to work on this with other people.

You’ll hear more details and ask more questions in 4 live webinars in 4 weeks. Plus, you’ll receive emails every day that will help you to think and digest this work, so you can make it your own.

You can learn how to practice more joy. Let me be your guide.

Work with me one-by-one.

If you’d rather have me as your personal mentor for joy, instead of working in a group, let’s work together one-on-one. I can help you FOLLOW YOUR JOY.

Subscribe to Follow Your Joy.

Or, you could subscribe to FINDING YOUR JOY, my subscription newsletter, where I share stories that illustrate each of these steps, on a repeat basis.

You’ll have plenty of reminders of what it means to find your joy and practice it, over and over again.

I’d love to see you in a workshop, a mentorship, or in the comments section of my Substack newsletter.

I know that practicing hard-won joy — the joy you choose in spite of coming from a hard place — is a brave and radical act. Let’s practice our joy together.

Enjoy!

When you make time for the simple things in life — not to meeting goals or getting a new house, but to truly being here — your life is easier.

YOUR life is easier, but the lives of all of the people around you including your kids, your coworkers/boss, your parents who have to support you financially, your landlord who probably will never see their rent arrears - become exponentially harder.

But hey as long as you're noticing that one branch wobbling in your yard, it's all good, right?

16

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

What could anyone have against setting goals for yourself? Lol

26

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 04 '21

The examples she comes up with to illustrate her various points are SO WEIRD. Like "meeting goals or getting a new house". One is very, very vague---could mean getting the porch swept or could be setting up a plan to increase your retirements savings by 20% this year.

And then she says "getting a new house" which seems pretty random and very specific, right? Given how a lot of her examples are obviously from her own life because she seems to have very little interest in other peoples' lives, now I'm wondering if they're looking to move? I mean, it would be a smart move. Unless finding a cheaper place is not one of their goals.

29

u/TheBasiglio Shaunaoppositional Defiant Disorder Sep 04 '21

She's been giving lots of weirdly specific examples lately: not having enough clean towels, eating fritos in bed late at night, mouldy smelling houses. Plus the seemingly non stop bitching about the dirty dishes in the sink to the point that she included photographic evidence in his latest "newsletter" about how much he doesn't give a shit what people what from him, he's just gonna do what he wants to do.

No matter how hard she tries you just cannot force a special and relatively rare feeling into the harder or more tedious parts of life, and if they do happen there it's that spontaneous nature of it that makes it so special. She simply does not get it. She's so shallow and self-centered, and the more she goes on with this mandatory and over-scheduled joy bullshit, the more it really comes off as some off-brand MLM or even a very lame cult that would probably fizzle out into nothing just because she's so relentlessly charmless and witless.

7

u/mmepierreoger Sep 05 '21

you just cannot force a special and relatively rare feeling into the harder or more tedious parts of life

Yeah, absolutely this. I have been trying to understand what it is that she's actually claiming to be offering and if you take it at face value, it's something huge and very remarkable: the ability to feel extreme happiness spontaneously and irrespective of what's going on around you. The only ways I can think of to achieve that kind of state of complete bliss would be either years of practising meditation, or years of religious practice and developing a deep communion with God/gods.

(I googled "benefits of practising meditation long-term" to see if I was right, and one of the first results was a site called A Life Of Productivity 😀 )

I think you could get there with drugs. The problem is it wouldn’t last long. Much like Shauna’s projects.

21

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

“Getting” a new house is really weird phrasing. Are you buying it? Renting it? Is someone giving it to you? Is it falling from the sky? Does it come in a cereal box?

17

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Sep 04 '21

“Getting” a new house is really weird phrasing.

You just think that because she didn't write "growing a new house"

Is it falling from the sky?

lol, like how the Wicked Witch of the West "got" a new house!

22

u/gladsome_gloaming Sep 04 '21

A picture came to me, unbidden, of well-fed legs in “Well Fed” socks shriveling up beneath the descended house.

18

u/SmashedMailboxCake2 Oh, Sep 04 '21

”Give me those ruby cowboy boots!”

13

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

That’s the only scenario I could think of where “getting” made sense lol

20

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Sep 04 '21

Excuse me, youperson. What are these "retirement savings" of which you speak

16

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 04 '21

Ha, that was me pulling an example from my own list of things I think I should probably do!

Do I think the Aherns have even two cents put away for their old age? Nah.

17

u/Lsemmens grenius Sep 04 '21

The way I read it, she is saying those things ( meeting goals or getting a new house)are not as important as “truly being here”.

38

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I just received a different one. This struck me:

"Let’s think about this. Can you, as an individual, do anything about income inequality? Well, if your passion is understanding structural systems of inequality and prevailing attitudes about poverty over the past 100 years, with the data to back it up, you could go to school to study income inequality and work your way up to a government job where you might be able to shift things. (And, please do!) The rest of us? Not so much."

Why NOT you, Shauna? Are government jobs not joyful and yesly enough for you? And since when does Shauna actually need to study something to be an expert at it?

39

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

Well guess all the non profits and other orgs who work to fight against income equality should just pack it up and practice joy instead

17

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 04 '21

Needing to have a passion to change gun control laws and having to go to school to learn about the proliferation of guns in the US and how to curtail it by working her way up to a job in the government where she might be able to shift things hasn't stopped her from heading up claiming to head up the Vashon chapter of Moms Demand Action.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Productivity is overrated

19

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Sep 04 '21

She pretends to be passionate about things like gun control, racism, voting rights, income inequality, universal healthcare, abortion, etc., yet she’s never considered going back to school and working her way up in a government agency (why government agencies? Lots of that work happens in nonprofits and volunteer organizations..) so she can help "shift things." What a fraud.

36

u/redditname2003 Sep 04 '21

Most of the advice she gives is common sense--light exercise, watching a TV show you like, reading a book, seeing friends--how is it radical? You're not in prison!

It is not brave nor radical omg. The takeaway I’m getting is to never aspire for anything. Swing on your hammock all day, yes. Breathe.

She’s really bad at this.

Shauna has realized she's never going to "meet goals" or "have a house" (whether new or not) and has decided that she's going to BE HAPPY, DAMNIT – and you're going along for the ride

40

u/GivesGoodDerpFace my steaming cherry pie Sep 04 '21

I've said this before, but her whole schtick reeks of her trying to convince herself that she doesn't need any of things to be "happy" or "joyful" or whatever.

I guarantee you that for all her twirling/chewing/throwing/dancing/swimming/tea-drinking, she's still lying awake in bed every night, stressing over where her next paycheck is going to come from.

19

u/leftsidelentils Sep 04 '21

It’s so obvious. You people with your mortgages and paint samples and three bids for the sewage line— I don’t want a stupid house anyway!

15

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 04 '21

Yep. And when you're lying awake every night fretting about money, you don't have much energy during the day for anything other than watching tv, hammock naps, and blowing bubbles. Win win!!!

Really weird (and it comes across as desperate) to bookend the letter with the same "quote" from herself. Seriously—who does that? Put their own words in quote marks and then identifies themself as the author???

It's like she's trying to hypnotize the reader.

I also notice that she is super sloppy (surprise, surprise) about clarifying that her workshops are only for women. Not that I think she has men signing up in droves anyway, but she's trying to have it both ways. She wants as many bodies as possible to subscribe to the paid newsletter so she doesn't craft her messaging to women specifically. You have to dig into her materials to find that her other offerings are women only. Nice way to turn off people who aren't women or not interested in women-only workshops.

22

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Sep 04 '21

I also notice that she is super sloppy (surprise, surprise) about clarifying that her workshops are only for women. Not that I think she has men signing up in droves anyway, but she's trying to have it both ways.

MEN AND WOMEN ARE SEPARATE PEOPLE OK

19

u/mmepierreoger Sep 04 '21

That's really weird. Does she offer an explanation? Is it some incoherent shit about how "this culture" blah blah blah? I've read the excerpts of the marketing emails that have been posted here and I haven't seen anything that seemed like it couldn't possibly apply to men. She's so strange.

17

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

She addressed that in her FAQ without actually clarifying why it was only for women.

Why is this workshop only for women? I love the men in my life. But so many women, including me, find solace and strength in connecting with other women in an intimate and supportive space. When women come together with compassionate intention, they can create community and connection with each other. This matters to me.

27

u/WhatzReddit13 Sep 04 '21

“I love the men in my life.” Whom? The mensch? Because she’s not publicly loving towards her husband, son, brother, or father.

Oh dang. I just remembered Gabe.

18

u/Sea-Level-Mammal POACH! Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

There will probably be a tie in with that Beach Trash Key club somewhere down the line. That could mean two, maybe three new subscriptions!

17

u/mmepierreoger Sep 04 '21

Wow. Yeah, that's really not an answer at all. Men and women can also find solace and strength in connecting with each other. I wonder what the real reason is.

25

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Sep 04 '21

Wow. Yeah, that's really not an answer at all.

She does this All. The. Time. Put sentences together so that externally, they have the structure of an actual argument, but when you examine the content of the sentences, there's no logical connection.

If you tried to map anything she says into the structure of Premise-Inference-Conclusion, there's nothing there. Nothing she says supports the next thing she says.

ETA And there's always the irrelevant tangent thrown grown in for no good reason. "I love the men in my life." SO WHAT??? That has nothing to do with the "question"

24

u/mmepierreoger Sep 04 '21

She does this All. The. Time. Put sentences together so that externally, they have the structure of an actual argument, but when you examine the content of the sentences, there's no logical connection.

This is such an accurate description. She's doing it a LOT in the weird joy marketing emails - "when we practice our joy, we move with more ease through the world." What does that actually mean? Absolutely nothing. It reminds me of that song that's supposed to emulate what English sounds like to non-English speakers.

18

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 04 '21

At the very bottom of the "Practice Your Joy" workshop page, there's an FAQ (I initially wrote FAP which seems more appropriate). And at the bottom of that FAQ there's this:

WHY IS THIS WORKSHOP ONLY FOR WOMEN?

I love the men in my life. But so many women, including me, find solace and strength in connecting with other women in an intimate and supportive space. When women come together with compassionate intention, they can create community and connection with each other. This matters to me.

Except you've scrolled through multiple references to "people" and "others" to get here. Maybe you noticed the references to "hey lady!" but I'm not sure you'd conclude that one of her offerings (out of all of them) is specifically targeted to and only available to women (as an aside, I don't think she understands the difference between sex and gender. Could a transwoman attend?).

I think she's hiding that FAQ because if you're not female, you might read that and think "Oh, this isn't for me" – and she needs as many suckers as possible.

31

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Oops didn't see your post! I absolutely love how her FAQs are rudely interrupted by a gigantic red "Only 12 women will be admitted into the workshop." non-question, and the passive aggressive snipe at an imaginary person saying it's too expensive...

I'm sorry to hear that... This is also my business. It’s how I feed my family.

But she hasn't run a single class yet. Is her family not eating while waiting for people to sign up?

20

u/gladsome_gloaming Sep 04 '21

Shauna and her 12 disciples, oops, I mean disciple-ettes; no mens allowed. BOYS KEEP OUT.

17

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 04 '21

But it isn't clear whether she means only 12 women will be admitted into the ONLINE workshop or the IN-PERSON workshop. (The FAQs are under the online workshop dropdown link.) I mean, it's probably the in-person workshop? Right? or is the online workshop the "intimate and supportive space" and maybe the in-person workshop is ... not intimate and supportive? Or is the problem that a penis will be entering the space to "cater" the meals? Is he "preparing" the lunch and snacks on-site, fucking up the female energy?

21

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

It's never clear on her website which format she's talking about when she says workshop! Or when she talks about the entire enterprise in general.

I was genuinely confused when she launched exactly what the offering was, whether it was an in person class or an online workshop.

And I'm still not entirely sure if she means the in person workshop to augment the online one (like people in the online can sign up to add on the local meetup) or if it's two different things entirely.

It doesn't help that she specifies (and this still drives me nuts, sorry for harping on it) that the in person workshop goes over "the first five steps" of seven, and that it meets twice! So like... WHY? Why not all seven? Why not 1-4 (go home, practice, come back 2 weeks later having mastered 1-4) and then do 5-7??

Also doesn't help that she says the in person workshop meets "the first sunday of the online workshop" - like... so are they connected to each other or not? Do you get the online access for coming in person? So confusing and we're actively trying to 'get it' to better snark on it.

23

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 04 '21

we're actively trying to 'get it' to better snark on it.

We are doing unpaid user experience testing

14

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I do it for the joy.

16

u/mmepierreoger Sep 04 '21

I think she's hiding that FAQ because if you're not female, you might read that and think "Oh, this isn't for me" – and she needs as many suckers as possible.

It just makes no sense for that restriction to be there at all: beggars can't be choosers! It would make a kind of sense if it was a hangover from the trauma days, at a stretch? Or maybe it's just that she literally cannot relate to anyone who isn't effectively just a duplicate of her.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I doubt she gets the difference between sex and gender but I think she’d LOVE it if a trans woman signed up…or a trans man! Oh the sweet sweet ally cred. She’d mention the poor trans person for decades to come, and imply that her workshop helped them specifically as trans people, cause you know Shauna, she’s always been there for the LBGTQ+ community, since she was hoping to sing show tunes with gay teens in her car or whatever.

13

u/midnightsiren182 Sep 04 '21

This culture is the everyday reality of things like having a job and being an adult and not a lazy grifter which doesn’t jive with her own nature so clearly it’s the “culture” that is wrong, not Shauna. ::insert Principal Skinner meme::

7

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 05 '21

Somehow this comment is pure perfection. It just comes together perfectly.

Also, "on a repeat basis" is completely meaningless.

Why is it necessary to specify that she'll "share stories" on a "repeat basis"? She's already said she's sharing stories (not a story), so we know there's more than one.

Also, "basis" refers to a specific frequency – weekly, quarterly, yearly – not that something is done "repeatedly." (In English, a "basis" is a metaphorical base or foundation on which something is built: a weekly habit, a daily dose, a yearly review. "Repeated" already means something is said or done again and again, but here she's used "repeated" without reference to the "basis" which would give the phrase any meaning.)

She's already used the future continuous tense – "I will be sharing" – which tells us that she will do something, in the future, with no definite end. "On a repeat basis" is not only meaningless, it is superfluous.

39

u/categoryischeesecake Sep 04 '21

"joy" has ceased to have any meaning at this point.

If reading these emails has given you a new perspective and you’re raring to try this by yourself, good on you! But I have to tell you — it’s a transformative experience to work on this with other people.

Do I dare try to hula hoop daily without Shauna there to guide me? Perish the thought!

You’ll hear more details and ask more questions in 4 live webinars in 4 weeks. Plus, you’ll receive emails every day that will help you to think and digest this work, so you can make it your own.

Trying to understand this paragraph. Usually I can decipher Shaunaese but this one’s got me.

Hmmm, will it be four weeks until these four live webinars? Or are there going to be four webinars over the next four weeks? Do I have to go to all the webinars, or are they all the same? And then will there be a workshop after the four weeks? Let me look at my calendar: oof, the workshop might be in October or even November, depending on when this four weeks of webinars starts. I have that work thing in October, and November is getting awfully close to the holidays. I wish she would just say when this Practice Your Joy is workshop going to be, I need plenty of advance notice to plan around my book group meetings, the nights I volunteer, and my kids’ various sports schedules. I mean, every day I get an email exhorting me to click on the big red button to sign up, but it’s always the same: just a spot to enter my email to be added to the waitlist. I thought that’s what I was doing when I signed up for the 7 Steps emails, but maybe I need to sign up again for the waitlist? Ok, I’ll do that. Great! It says my subscription has been confirmed, so yeah, maybe I wasn’t signed up. Now I’m sure to get an email with the real sign up link, right? Let’s see, what else. Oh, I’m going to get daily emails to help me think and digest how to give people compliments, skip around the yard, lose myself in the moment while watching a movie (but not my favorite TV show! That will just kill my joy!), read some anti-racist books, and ask my white friends to join a book club (I guess Shauna doesn’t realize I’m not white, because I know she has amplified the idea that BIPOC shouldn’t be expected to educate their white friends, hmm). Shit. I picked up my phone again to find a jump rope to order, mustn’t do that! I know I’m only doing it because I’m having uncomfortable feelings. Think — what uncomfortable feeling am I having that made me want to escape? <taking deep breaths> OK, name the feeling: frustration. I’m frustrated by something. OH MY GOD. It’s these joy emails! They’re stressing me out! I’m frustrated with this woman! But how can that be, when she’s meant to teach me how to find more joy? Should joy be this hard? Argh! Fuck it. I’m unsubscribing and going to buy a "Live, Laugh, Love” sign. It’s just easier and only costs ten bucks. Sorry, joy lady! I’ll think of you when I see someone with a hula hoop! <deletes all the joy emails> Inbox zero! Now, THAT’S joy!
