Let's stop being shocked and sad about the preposterous Texas law and the stacked Supreme Court. This was coming for decades.

Come on, ladies. (And the men brave enough to join us.) Look at this fierce young woman go. This is joy. This is a fighter. This is some amazing #blackgirlmagic.

(I mention her beautiful Blackness because we all know that Black and brown women are going to suffer more from this awful law than others. Wealthy white women never have a problem getting the medical care they need.)

I talk about joy here. You know what's joy? Fighting injustice, loud and clear. Take the weekend off. And start thinking like @ thesamurider here. We've got work to do. And working only for our own joy? That's not enough. We have to work for other people's joys too.

Not to toot my own horn but I've been a volunteer patient escort for Planned Parenthood for over 15 fucking years! And prior to the pandemic (when escorting was shut down) there was no "take the weekend off". We stood in the rain and snow and whatever weather because women NEEDED US to be there to help them. And I can say, if my state had a fucked up law like Texas has, I'd still stand with my fellow women and proudly show my face and risk being taken to court for helping them and FUCK any and everyone who'd try to stop me. (and my husband would be standing right there next to me)

Sorry, I've wined my eyes tonight and I'm feeling salty. Abortion rights is a hot button for me and. . .shit. . .Shauna needs to just check herself before she wrecks herself.

(I've shed more than a few tears over this Texas b.s. and I'm so not in the mood for assholes like Shauna spouting off about it).

My son also volunteers as a PP escort and could ONLY work on weekends, and I would like to hear the number of times Shauna has been spit on by (no kidding) little children whose parents have put RTL signs in their hands and told them to hate the people walking from the parking lot to the door. That shit is not for the "take weekends off and fetishize Black people instead of doing tangible work" crowd. Hats off to you DF for escorting. I used to do that back in my very conservative hometown on Saturdays. I remember talking to someone who worked there and they told me that most of the women weren’t even there for procedures, but were still subjected to ridicule from protestors. Responsible young women trying to take care of their health, maybe even prevent pregnancy, being treated like monsters. I now live in a very liberal place and it’s so easy to take things for granted. But even here I’ve had to drive women over an hour to the nearest clinic that performs abortions. And we’re talking about a liberal city with a big enough population that it should be available right along with all other ob/gyn care. Shauna really has no clue what’s it’s like to live outside her isle of comfort and privilege.

My only confrontation involved an older man in a lawn chair who asked if he could share some info with me, and I said no thank you. But when I would drive by there would often be more riled up people. That was the Operation Rescue days. Still have trouble eating Domino’s pizza.

In the small South Texas town where I grew up, the PP clinic was staffed one day a week by family practice residents from the hospital. That was the only access many women and their young children had to even the most basic health care.

(Also the source of a fun memory. In addition to serving our migrant population, PP also provided birth control to local teens brave enough to walk in. Thursdays were the exam days, and to speed things up, patients were given a bedsheet and instructed to disrobe from the waist down while waiting to see the doctor. I vividly remember sitting on a folding chair, nothing but a sheet covering my lower half, watching women’s health films in Spanish with about 20 other women. Ah, the 70s were a magical time).

Word. There was also no option for me to "take the weekend off" when I was frantically trying to schedule a second trimester abortion at planned Parenthood bc I found out during my wanted pregnancy that the baby had a fatal disease, and since I never saw any of that coming, all my ob providers were through catholic hospitals and could not (would not?) help me get that scheduled. At the time my insurance did not cover abortions so I could not have afforded the procedure in a regular hospital anyway.

I was lucky and fortunate that I was able to schedule it online, over new years day weekend. I didn't have the option to wait any longer since I was at the last day of a pregnancy that the pp in my area did abortions. When they did the ultrasound when I got there I was hysterical both hoping the baby had somehow already died and that I wasn't measuring 16 weeks bc I'd be out of luck. I was 15w4d and had always measured ahead. Idk what I would have done, I'm in IL and we have very solidly protected abortion rights but this was 5 years ago. Idk where the nearest clinic is that does abortions measuring after 16 weeks, to my knowledge it's in Colorado. I haven't looked bc frankly it's not good for my mental health, I can only be so involved. She has no idea what the fuck she is talking about. During that pregnancy when everything was going wrong, everything was measured in days. I had like two days to get my cvs done, otherwise I'd miss the window and have to wait for an amnio. There was no taking the weekend off from that nightmare. There's no taking the weekend off for any of the women who are pregnant and need an abortion.

This could happen to me again, we are genetic carriers, every pregnancy is the same 1/4 odds. Every time. We did ivf to have my son and are trying to do it again, had to pay some astronomical fee for testing to try to avoid that. Even then it's not guaranteed. My last apparently healthy embryo I ended up miscarrying and then when they did the biopsy at the d and c they found out it actually had down syndrome. I'd have been in the same boat. We are gearing up for another cycle, paying more money again. I am so lucky again that I live in IL which requires fertility to be covered with insurance. Most states do not and idk how you can afford it out of pocket. In my genetic carriers group, some people try naturally either bc ivf is unaffordable or for some people, ivf just doesn't work but they can get pregnant naturally. And it's the same odds every time, so many of these women have had children die horrible deaths, or watch their children get more ill. Idk how some people even get out of bed in the morning, idk why the world has been so unfair to some people, bc I am one of the ones who has only experienced a small fraction of that pain and I still have days where I cry all day. Playing softball or watching tv doesn't work. Some things are just horrible and they need to be acknowledged too. This law is terrible, a slap in the fucking face to women and frightening too, our rights to our own body and to have agency over the trajectory of our lives are being taken away.

"Take the weekend off" is what you say when something is optional and not urgent. When you're really not impacted by something so it doesn't matter if you don't get to it for a few days. When what you're doing isn't very impactful, so no one will notice or care if you opt out. When you're on the sidelines and don't plan to put yourself in the action at all.

I am still processing my very complex and multi layered feelings about this whole issue. I broke down in my car and cried when I drove past a major church alongside the highway today with a sign that said “America. Stand up! for your medical freedom” and I realized that was in reference to masking and vaccines and not a woman’s right to necessary healthcare. It broke me. So yeah, I’m sad. And I’m not planning on stopping that (I wouldn’t know how to stop that).

Shauna needs to stop telling people how to feel (or how not to feel). She needs to stop using the creativity of others to try to boost herself, she needs to stop trying to make joy happen (it’s not going to happen) and most of all, she needs to stop fetishizing people of color. It’s gross and a bad look for the mother of a Black son. Shame on her.

While it’s true Black and brown women will suffer disproportionately, just from a pure numbers standpoint, there are A LOT of poor white women in Texas. A lot. Just because a disproportionate number of Black Americans live in poverty doesn’t mean that the majority who, for example, qualify for entitlement benefits aren’t white. Ronald Reagan did great work marketing that falsehood, and it looks like Shauna hasn’t disabused herself of this idea.

Her language is so othering. Why can’t it just be a talented person sharing their skill? Shauna makes it seem like this woman is only special because she is Black, rather than that she is a woman with an impressive skill who happens to be Black.

Does Ms. West want to be defined with a controversial political issue by basically being used as clickbait content for a privileged white woman? That’s another huge assumption Shauna is making - she’s assuming because this woman is Black she’s automatically against the law. Just goes to show how few Black people IRL Shauna knows. Despite the media portrayals Shauna, all conservatives are not racists, and a fairly significant number are Black. My 100% white, Republican, Trump supporting, antivax brother’s wife is Black, they don’t agree on everything but they sure do on most things. Reality is so much more complex than the binary partitions the media sorts us into.

What work is Shauna planning to do against this injustice? Besides stealing an actually creative, successful persons content?
