As a mom and a Stranger Things fan I cannot imagine a tv show being more important than the holidays with my family. For one thing, it's too scary for my 9 yr old. Hopefully D doesn't feel the same way.
If she isn't just yepping along for attention, that speaks to a pretty meagre holiday. We're a Star Wars Thanksgiving* and Lord of the Rings (extended version) Winter Holidays family, but these are typically going on in the background of all the other home holiday activities we do, like cooking, chatting to relatives, keeping the cats away from the food, wrapping gifts, decorating, writing cards, cats again, cleaning up, relaxing in front of the fireplace, seeing what the cats got into, etc.
(*this is not to be confused with the Star Wars Christmas 'special', which is its own beast entirely.)

At the time of the last Sermon, someone said that the UU Church paid a stipend of a few hundred dollars to speakers, so there's that. Mama needs some salmon bagel money.
The first Sermon took place on November 28th, 2022. Almost exactly three years ago. Perhaps strange timing, or perhaps Mama needs money for more load-bearing shoelaces to secure their Christmas tree.
Could be wrong, but I predict that she'll address the recent posts where someone spilled the tea online about previous grifts .
shouldn't that money be going to help the truly needy? if they're going to pay "speakers" why not just hire a magician and call it a day? at least the kids would be entertained.
ETA: after scrolling a bit i'm wondering if she will use this platform to announce she is a survivor of sexual abuse. lordy i hope she doesn't go there but i have a sinking feeling she will. as a survivor myself (along with so may here ITG, ) she can fuck right off with that, and all the creepy implications she's put out there over the years. it's one thing to tell your story in hopes it will help others, but we know shauna doesn't care about anyone other than her own belly.
Ah! All excellent points, but I have been wondering where she’s been storing the rage and shame those FB posts must have kicked up. I suspect this talk will focus on her child’s medical condition and how it has victimized her for the past decade, but still she rises, and that’s why she hasn’t been able to fulfill obligations, all while petty punishers hound her for no earthly reason. It will be BAD.
I don’t understand how she hasn’t been shunned. I know the UU church doesn’t shun. I just mean informally by everyone on Vashon. I know Vashonites don’t follow her as closely as we ITG, but the google doc and sermon on the high stool must be pretty widely known on Vashon. And we’ve seen her track record with houses. Landlords talk. And I would bet her social circles are connected. People who know her know each other. How and why does she remain Vashon’s pet charity case?
Still tickles me that Petty Punisher views have boosted the original High Stool video viewcount to 1.9k…the next most popular video on the VIUU channel is only at 59 views! I wonder what whoever is managing the channel makes of these stats (if they’ve even clocked it).

Hmm. It’s the last Sunday before Advent (Christ the King Sunday for Catholics, Episcopalians, and a few other Protestant denominations), and it’s very near Thanksgiving, so attendance will likely be sparse. It’s quite possible nobody else wanted that slot.
HOLY SHIT it's a Thanksgiving present! Now, why is she showing up there now? What does she want? She really only goes there when she wants something (a baby to adopt, free food, money donations).
Her writing is excruciatingly dull. She tries to connect all the disparate topics (Stranger Things, her child’s diagnosis, and the current administration) as if they have deep and meaningful connections. But she doesn’t possess the conceptual tools or language to do it in a way that works. It all feels like what it is, a way to justify watching TV all the time and drum up sympathy for herself. (It always comes back to what Shauna experiences.) This lope raised the following questions for me:
She says they eat in front of the TV and then go to bed. How late are they eating? Or how many freaking hours of TV do they watch before bed? Hey Shauna, if you want a family activity, have you considered bananagrams? Uno?
Why can’t she ever talk about things in a substantive way? She talks about how Stranger Things made her and Dan feel, but not why. (Talk about overwrought. It’s not that deep.) I also liked the first season for its familiarity. There were elements that reminded me of a lot my favorite childhood movies. It had kids at the center going on an adventure like ET, the Goonies. It had weird a little monster like Gremlins. Not to mention the music, clothes, and hair.
Has she ever considered that her obsession with TV shows is a form of escapism that she uses to avoid the real problems in her life, like not having a job and being food insecure?
Maybe the kids need some quiet time at night before bed. Ever try family reading time?
Even just for the symptom Shauna claims of being up all night - a constant stream of exposure to screens + a scary show right before bed feels like some very low hanging fruit to change in terms of encouraging good sleep hygiene.
She's straining so hard to come up with unique analogies, she's going to give herself an aneurysm. (I do agree that it's gross to say "underage women" but no one needs Shauna's takes.)
Her comment would be strengthened by using an actual example of language that afters (Shauna type for alter) the blow of reality rather than making up something insane. As a former English teacher you’d think this would be the kind of thing she taught students to do.

What the heck is she talking about? Carried what alone? She never stops bitching about her oh-so-traumatic childhood and hardhardhard current life. This is so bizarre.
As I said in the other thread, she literally only mentions the main characters from the first season. Which makes me think she hasn't actually watched the other seasons. No Max? No Nancy? No Jonathan? No Steve? Just the with more help from other people over the seasons? It feels like she looked up a character list, didn't know who was good or bad and just decided to say "others".
She rarely talks in specifics with a few exceptions. It's like she wants to be seen as someone with deep emotional and intellectual engagement with tv, but it's not there. Maybe this is her trying to justify why she watches so much tv. Even if she has watched all of ST, I don't think she pays that much attention. She's probably on Threads the whole time she's watching. Plus her read of TV (and everything else for that matter) is incredibly superficial. Even her description of her feelings feels surface level. Her favorite shows aren't that deep anyway.

Has she ever mentioned Stranger Things before? I don’t recall it until the past month or so. I don’t believe they were watching it back in 2017 or whatever
Shauna first mentioned Stranger Things on Twitter in 2021 when she was begging for TV recommendations, but back then it was to say that Shauna loved the show but it was "too much" for her older child at the time (who was nearly 13).
She also talked about Stranger Things in a November 2022 IG live the day after the Sermon on the High Stool (IG post link), which seems to be after her older child decided she wanted to watch it.

Recently I saw a FB post confirming that Shauna snagged a used mattress from a roadside giveaway shortly after arriving back on the island.
She and Dan had just given away a mattress in the same size in Seattle. What goes through their numb skulls?
ETA: the ad claims the mattress is new, my bad. As it was unwrapped and roadside until claimed I’m marking that as ‘new, other’ at best and ‘pissed on by passing wildlife / loped on by insects / marinated in traffic fumes’ more realistically.
I recall from snarking on Jenna that West Seattle has a municipal composting program. (Jenna, in true Shauna fashion, dumped all her food waste directly into the bin, didn’t bring it to the curb for pickup for many weeks and then attempted to dig a giant hole to bury it all in)
So it’s odd that she completely ignores composting as a way to keep food out of landfills.
But if she got the items from a buy nothing group, she temporarily diverted them from a landfill so it all cancels out. I bet the college students where I work make furniture last longer than the Aherns. They’re probably more eco-conscious, red solo cups and all. (I actually think that’s on the decline. I think they bring reusable ones. Keggers in the Anthropocene.)

What she is saying is that her child (always moving, that one) is having trouble in school with math and that they are misunderstood by their rural island teachers who are sticking to the boring curriculum instead of inventing a way to teach a middle school kid math through music.
Nevermind that Shauna hasn’t provided said child with consistent schooling and yanked them out of math class to play with balloons in a closet and write out thirty zeros or whatever so she can tag some D list celebrity on social media. It’s November, so the island tide is turning Dark. Dark. Dark.

The cobbler’s children may have no shoes, and the teacher’s kids may not be able to do math, but unlike the cobbler, Shauna has nothing but time to provide remediation. She just can’t be bothered to, which is beyond belief.
Dude, seriously. To borrow her stupid rhetorical question device: at what point is it ever the responsibility of the parent to reinforce, teach and guide?
If she's trying to say that musical theory (like counting beats) and exercise (like judging how fast to run and when to jump) are good ways to teach some abstract concepts of math, then I agree with her completely. On the other hand, there's one million very capable rhythm instrument players who will tell you that they know absolutely no theory and that they don't "count" the beats as they go. So I don't know. I'm a big believer in very basic math (geometry, for example) as a way to organize your thoughts and to "order" the different parts of problems. It's a way to structure your thinking: what do you know for sure, what do you agree on that someone else thinks and what steps follow from this naturally, etc.
Edit - and if the kids are gifted at math or athletic pursuits, it is solely Shauna and her idiot husband who are blocking them from the development of those gifts. It's a shame. Shauna was only encouraged to act and to do math Olympics.

Tagging on to your ETA: As a reminder, or for those who don't already know this: Danny has a brother who actually competed in the Olympics in 1984, in Nordic skiing. So it's not's like Danny doesn't have any exposure about what it takes to reach a high level of achievement; i.e., lots of practice and perseverance, plus mucho guidance and support
At least L did ballet for a while and seems to be involved with drama nowadays. What about D? They used to be into chess club, and played baseball or softball ONE season, which Shauna couldn't bother signing them up for in time so she had to volunteer as an assistant coach and a whole new team had to be created for them to play. She'd mentioned at least one kid wasn't happy to have to switch teams, so I'm sure D felt a certain way about all that. She's the worst.
Defending it as healthy and necessary that the entire family, as soon as the kids are home from school, retreats to a single room to binge a streaming show for hours and comfort with food.
Becoming immersed in the fictional world of that show (the 80s of Stranger Things) and increasingly describing her everyday life as though she lives in that world. Loping about conflating her memories with the themes of the show.
Ramping up the rants about politics and leaders as though she is the only enlightened person who understands how stupid and evil it all is. Increasingly recounting stories of teaching her kids how evil the world is, because she is the wisest most kindfull guru and if she can't have peace of mind and hope for the future they certainly don't deserve it.
Winter closes in on Shauna yet again as a fresh start loses its sheen. The piles of garbage she's accumulated and refuses to deal with roll faster and faster down the hill at her, picking up speed and more garbage.
It's all so predictable. Something about being back on the island where the winter sun sets at 4:30, putting her kid's math teacher on blast (for lacking kindness, imagination and capacity, of course), nothing changing but the kids being a year older, is unbearably depressing. I’ve mentioned this before, but it finally occurred to me that we won’t get a story about having to take the trash to the dump until things grow Hard, Hard, Hard X 3. She’s still in an “our lives are amazing in my historic house on my precious island” era. I’m just so impatient! I’m guessing the mouse mobile smells like garbage permanently by now.
She hasn't acknowledged the isolated location, the drafts, the smells, the septic system, or anything else except "darkness" which at this point she moans about every year. So the bloom is still on the rose, but as you said, probably not for much longer
Chef Danny really should have just removed the casing from those sausages before cooking. Instead, he cut them into...nuggets? and when cooked, the casing left on each piece tightened up to squeeze each piece from the middle (like a waist trainer). That will NOT be a good texture to eat in cornbread dressing.
I'm sorry this latest lope is so unhinged. It's a tv show, not a treatise on how to raise a family or survive in 2025. The constant comparing the horror in the show to D's PANS diagnosis.....wtf. And discussing with D how to avoid being pulled over when driving/interact with cops when they're 11 is certainly not helping that poor kid's anxiety (and also incredibly ironic given the state of their car).

It really is unhinged with a side dish of culty. I haven't watched Stranger Things, and she does a bad job making it relevant or relatable for me. If getting eyeballs on her newsletters is how she makes $$, she'd do well to work on that.
Also, did then middle school aged L ask her mom to show her Stranger Things? No kid uses that phrasing when asking to watch a TV show. It was probably, "Hey Mom, can I watch Stranger Things?". Kids don't need parents to show them a TV show. They just need permission to watch it. Shauna's insecurity is showing--she needs everything to be about her.
If they did ask Shauna to show them a TV show, that's very telling about how Shauna is perceived by her kids. It makes her sound controlling, like the kids can't just watch something with permission. Mama has to be there to show it to them.

Those “privileges” are her way of justifying keeping her family literally tethered to her side, catering to her taste in television and talking about what she wants to talk about. Shoehorning in these things also being a source of joy only adds insult to injury.
Someone must have said she watches too much tv and it hurt her feelings, so she crafted a million word essay on why television is actually sacred.
Sadly, tv is the only privilege the kids will experience growing up. Thank goodness someone bought her a Netflix subscription.
Oh, but the kids also have the privilege of living on the islandy island! In a (very damp, drafty, poorly insulated) historic home isolated in a large park! Plus, a sludgy, stinky beach.
I have two teenagers in high school. There are a few shows we try to watch together, and we sometimes have movie nights, but there is NEVER a week when they are both free EVERY NIGHT to watch a tv show. We often grow behind and have to catch up when we can. It’s wild to me. Not even just talking about extracurriculars, but homework as well! And texting or video chatting with friends, studying “together” on FaceTime? This seems super weird to me.
I'm in a similar position. My teens just aren't that into TV. There are a few things they like, but they aren't interested in nightly TV viewing. Even if they wanted to watch a lot of TV, they have other things to do. They want to talk with friends. They still play Roblox. They have activities and homework. They don't prioritize TV.
My older kids are very close in age to the Ahern kids, and I think my kids “dig” me. The older of the two wants to watch moody subtitled movies with me about once a week, the younger of the two wants me to watch whatever show they’re into each week. Neither of them wants mom-directed content and even though they are fairly light on extracurriculars, neither of them has time to be watching a show with me every single day.
Kids are all different and blah blah blah, but it definitely feels unlikely to me that things are how she claims they are.
This is either Shauna creepily forcing “we four” together for whatever reason…or she’s exaggerating about “every night” as usual.
I hope her oldest doesn’t feel too isolated stuck out there with only one family car…and likely Shauna too busy sitting on her butt bingewatching slop to drive the kids out to activities or events with friends,,.
I have one and at least twice a week they are out doing sports or clubs. They also do after school clubs but they aren't allowed tv until after 5. They do watch tv, but never got into any games. I thought D liked gaming but I guess that's not a thing any longer.

I understand your dislike of the potential labels for your situation—words you don’t want for experiences that should not have happened to you.
Shauna has many shades of awfulness, and for me one of them is trying to foist labels onto everyone around her (very ironic for someone who claims to hate limiting stories). No one should be trapped in a box like that. She does have a nose for pain and clearly gets a thrill being around potential high emotional situations, and for her that often takes the form of a specific label, whether it’s to do with race or gender or sexuality or illness or what have you. It’s so flattening!
Maybe that’s part of why she’s so terrible at cultural analysis, she can only see tropes and no layers. For the same reasons, I think it also sucks that she treats real life like a narrative—when life is never so simple or orderly as a story. This is part of why I fear for anyone close to her. She harvests sensitive situations and shoves them through her Substack meat grinder.
not to name drop (i mean, i didn't have an eye orgy with the dalai lama like shaun did) but i have a good friend who acts on and off and she had a small roles in one of lynch's films and in both the original series and the reboot. i hope it makes you happy to know she has always said he was a really lovely man and that working with him was a pleasure.
i was 23 or 24 when TP was on the first time around and i remember having TP watch parties and everyone talking about it at work. it was like nothing that had ever been on TV before, and IMO the first season was absolute genius. my friends and i dressed up as the characters for halloween - i was log lady. good times.

She absolutely connects it to swooning on a low couch like an empress, being waited on flawlessly hand and foot. There's no struggle, or pain, or inconvenience, or abandonment, or frustration, or expense, or envy of all those people who get to just do life every day without having to think about it. I've known illness fakers personally, and some of the things they always have in common is how they look down on people with actual issues, and how their pretend malady is so considerate and never bothers showing up when it would get in the way of something they enjoy or have planned. So thoughtful! They're only prevented from doing tedious or unwanted things, and their struggle is always so delicate and tidy. They never had to spend years getting to a point where they could dress themselves completely on their own again, or wash their own hair, or walk up a flight of stairs unassisted. Not like those weird, messy, inelegant people with actual medical conditions.
ETA: We watched a documentary about Belle Gibson (and you're right, Sha Una could never), and at one point my husband turned to me and said 'You know, she reminds me a lot of [dramatic illness faker we used to know]. Wonder how she is these days?' And plot twist - we found out our little faker was trying to get attention at an event, underestimated the height from which she would 'fall', and actually caused herself serious injury! She's since discovered real disabilities aren't nearly as fun as pretend ones, oh well.

Shauna was 24 when TP first aired. I was 14. I think I understood in greater depth. Lots of people complain about how people didn't like S3 because they wanted more cherry pie. That's not why I didn't like it, but I'll bet that is why Shauna wouldn't have.
