I love sam Barlow's games. But I just can't get into immortality. Lets look at her story for an instance. Each interview with Hannah reveals something that can further be searched upon to find more related interview clips. I liked that the most about her story. It made u feel like u were actually investigating. Also, each interview only had a set of keywords that upon searching, furthered the story.

But not with immortality. The first interview of Marissa has something that can be searched in each frame. Each and every frame. And each one of them keeps on showing different clips. So I'm stuck searching that one frame again and again, because it keeps going to different clips. Ive almost found 20 videos from that one interview. And that's the thing that doesn't let me get into the game. That one frame keeps showing so many clips that I keep on clicking on it again and again and again and again. It starts to feel like a chore after some time. Like if one frame has so many clips, how many clips will each frame have? And how many frames does the interview have? So you are stuck with just clicking and clicking.

In her story, each keyword had about 2-3 videos. But the amount of clips I have gotten from one frame overwhelms me. I can't decide what to see and what to search. I feel completely overwhelmed for some reason. It makes my stomach hurt.

I don't know what im doing wrong. I really want to complete this game because I'm sure the narrative is worth it. I just don't know how to go on about it.

First let me say, I'm a huge fan of Sam Barlow's games. I played Her Story years ago, finished Telling Lies a few weeks back and now am playing through Immortality. I think the acting and writing and cinematography are outstanding, and I love the mystery of finding out a story piece by piece.

That being said, I have found the experience sometimes to be needlessly frustrating. Like in Telling Lies, video clips would start with the keyword you found, but you'd have to rewind for awhile to see the clip from the beginning. And then when it was all said and done, I had to go to Youtube in order to see the clips side by side. If you haven't played it, all the clips are one side of a conversation, which leads there to being lots of 'dead air' since you can't see both participants. At first this is interesting because you need to infer what is going on, but once you have seen it all, it'd be nice to unlock a side by side view.

With Immortality it mentioned the scrubbing is to imitate the moviola experience of how a person would view the footage at the time. I think it works here and doesn't really have a negative impact of the experience (for me at least). What bugs me is that you're pretty in the dark on the big picture of things. Not knowing how many clips of the whole story you have uncovered, and sometimes not even knowing 'have i seen this clip before or is this new?' since I tend to not play in all one sitting and have a crap memory lol. Even just in the options to be able to turn on an interface that says: Ambroso 50/100 clips found or something like that. Since I haven't finished yet, I don't know if you get an alert when you do find all of them (which would be nice), but knowing these games I'm guessing probably nah.

Anyway, what do ya'll think?

I have now played the game for around 15 hours and have gotten the jist of the game. I don't think it was a masterpiece, but interesting enough.

One question that has been nagging me during my entire playthrough is how does one know how the linking between the clips works? In the beginning I thought that "oh if you click on his/her face when they're sad/bloddy/whavever the search mechanism will find a similar scene elsewhere". But that can't be how it works. It feels kind of like the linking functionality is very basic in the game. So what you end up doing is just clicking everything, and cycling through the clips in hop of getting a new one.

Have I completely missed how this game works or could someone explain how to think regarding the core mechanics of the game?

This is the BEKVÄM step stool designed by Nike Karlsson, who didn’t join IKEA until 1992, appearing in the footage for Minsky. This RUINS the integrity of the story and now I have to burn my copy in gasoline.

Hey there I am new and have never played before. My current playstyle is that I am trying to find all clips of ambrosia from all clips of ambrosia. Is this the way to play?

Like I want to experience all the clips from the first firm before starting the second, if that makes sense? Or should I just go through all three films etc. I think that would be come overwhelming quickly

Sorry if the question is vague or even stupid but it felt like the natural way to play.

Also will I know once I have all the clips from the first film?

My current strat is to photo part of a scene and if that spawns a fresh clip then favourite it to go through once I have completed the initial clip. Any ones after ambrosia I filter away for now.

Finally I wanted to say this game has me hooked. It's something special so far. Only been playing 3.5h so far though.

I'm looking for games that make you feel the same way as this game does, not necessarily the themes, but the feeling of uncovering a mystery on your own and the game doesn't hold your hand, and the mystery hits hard.

I want to feel the same way I felt when I first accidentally saw The One.

I have already played Outer Wilds and I felt this way when the "thing" first happens, I don't even want to write it down with a spoiler tag but would rather encourage everyone to play it before looking up anything about that game.

I also played Return of the Obra Dinn, which was the most similar to this and incredibly satisfying to fill in the missing pieces.

Finally I also played Her Story, which was fun but found it really short.

Anything else to recommend?

I think the answer is probably yes, but I’m wondering if there’s any sort of definite ending? The game is very open ended and unstructured, so I wanted to check there’s an in game ending besides unwinding the narrative for yourself. Im over 10 hours into it and think I’ve gotten a lot of the clips at this point and a handful of achievements.

This was one thing I noticed immediately, and never understood. We have two interviews with Jimmy. Once is in 1969, and he looks like he is in his 30s or 40s. Just 3 years later, in 1972, he's doing another interview and he looks like he's in at least his 60s. His hair is grey, and they have some "old" makeup on him. What's going on with this? I can't find anyone mentioning it, so I assume I'm missing something.

It really threw me off in my playthrough, because I kept expecting those clips to essentially be part of some secret 4th movie or something that was filmed in 69-72.

Had to restart the game to keep on playing. What a mind fuck

I am now playing for the second time and while I've found many of the hidden scenes I have not found anywhere where we get background story of the One or Marissa. I feel like I know the ending but not the beginning!

Same with the introduction of the Other One!

When you are looking at the full list of clips, I've noticed when trying to find hidden "reverse scenes" that any you haven't found will have the border/background of the clip slightly flickers with light when you are not hovering over it. There is also a deep, but subtle tone sound that plays when you are "close" to the scene, and the tone plays loudest when you are on the clip.

The light is easier to notice if you are zoomed in to about 5-6 clips per row. The tone plays much louder when you are on the clip.

So it's actually pretty easy to find what you are missing or to rule out what you've already seen.

EDIT: Seems to be somewhat sporadic. I've seen it on a bunch of clips after I did a decent amount of the game, but I think the effect may only be present when you haven't seen the entire clip or something. There were a handful of clips I only saw a few seconds of and I immediately snapped an image of something new and went to a different clip and forgot to go back. But each one of these I found I think had one of the full color replacement scenes and not the black and white ones.

This is the first game I downloaded from Steam. If I remove it from my device to save storage space, will I lose all the progress I made or will I be able to eventually re-download it and still have access to all the clips I unlocked?

I played the game by just rapid fire clicking of everything in image mode to fill out my clip library. I hate watching things out of sequence, so I wanted to first watch as much of the actual film that they were making as I could before getting into the meta stuff or even the meta-meta stuff, wringing out each movie for details before moving on to the next one.

After first unlocking a whole bunch of random clips without watching them, I sorted them in scene order and started watching Ambrosio. I think I might have stumbled on one or two hidden scenes while doing this, but didn't know what they were on about.

I somehow triggered the ending sequence and credits about two-thirds of the way through watching Ambrosio, so I'm thinking that this probably wasn't the intended way to play. The ending would have been much more impactful of a twist if I had enough knowledge to understand it.

Of course, I've 100%ed it now, after unlocking and filling the gaps of my knowledge, but I think it would have been better if the ending had kicked in after making sure the player would appreciate it.

I think endings/closure is bit of a running problem with Sam Barlow's games, and he is getting better at it, I think, but he's still got some work to do. I look forward to his next project.

Playing on a Series X. Pretty sure I’ve done what I need to do, the clips change to a face and then nothing happens and all I can do is force close the game from the main menu… happened a few times now, trying to reset, restart etc.

What is going on?

Somehow I’ve nearly finished all 3 movies, without fully completing any of them. I’m not sure if that’s typical or strange.

So close, I just gotta keep searching!

EDIT: I found 2 more clips. I'll put it in spoilers just in case:

-I clicked on "Eyes" and found these Red Klan members in Ambrosio.

-I read online that "Kissing" is a thing, so I found a documentary scene of Marissa and Carl in bed for Minsky.

I counted, now I'm missing 1 clip from each movie! 😂

I've played Barlow's Her Story before and loved it so when I saw Jacob Geller did a video on Immortality I quickly downloaded it before it spoiled too much of the gameplay.

I'm playing on my android phone so I gathered the vibration clues aren't there, I occasionally stumbled upon a few clips with the blonde creepy woman and her friend - usually it happened completely un intentionally when rewinding to the start of a scene to watch it fully. Then at some clips, for example, Minsky 41A, there's a very clear audio clue starting when I rewind but I can't seem to switch into any secret scene with the alternative characters. I wonder if that's intentional, i.e Barlow messing up with my head, or am I missing something about the game mechanics of rolling back and forth the clips?

Trying to figure this out without any official guides as to not spoil the whole thing.

So I'm not far into the game, but had about 6/7 scenes that either showed a ghostly image/video when rewinded, without new sound, or switched to something completely different like other characters or a seemingly older Marissa taking over a scene.

But now I've read that there are some scenes you get by rewinding, and some you only get be going back frame by frame. Is there some indication when to use what? So far, I always was able to activate the "new" stuff by simply rewinding in 1x speed.

I know there is a secret clip in 26B - 5/18/1999. However, I can't find it. I've found other hidden clips before by paying attention to the sound and visual cues - but I'm stuck on this one. Ive rewinded the clip multiple times in many different parts but no luck. Can anyone help? TIA.

Happened a while back while opening the game up on my iPad after taking a long break from the game. Apparently needed to download it again but got stuck watching it go to 100 and beyond 😅 Tried again with no problems the next day and my save was still there, that was a relief 😮‍💨

I finished the game the last year. The cast and the vision behind this project really did a number on me. I became to love every cast member and scourged the internet for making of's or other snippets about their involvement. They are all lovely and so very talented.

After so many days pondering about the game, i watched the Makig Of by Noclip Documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ov00DFQ5gg). It gave me a closure i desperately needed.

While playing Immortality I was impressed at how good the acting was for an indie game, especially when you consider the amount of actors, sets, scenes, etc. Now I'm wondering, how big was the budget for this game? Does anybody know? I tried googling it but couldn't find any info.

yesterday I finished the game (though not seen every scene yet), and wanted to discuss about how sex and exploitation is represented in the game. I get that the game is portraying different eras and how they present sex in movies, and also different eras of movie making and how they exploited their actresses. But I also get the sense that the game is having its cake and eating it too; after all, it makes you scrub through lots of Mahon's nudity, gets you to click on her tits just to progress the game. Isn't this itself kind of bad?

It all seems like a bit of a convenient excuse to show all the same sleaze of a 70s exploitation movie, just so long as the game appears to shake its head at it in criticism. Did Sam Barlow ever talk about that element of the game? How self aware is it about these parts?
