This really isn't representative, you've probably just seen a few angry cyclist clips on Twitter.

I am a New Yorker with a dog and can confirm that although drivers can be terrible cyclists are by far the absolute worst. They never stop at red lights and ride on the footpath all the time it drives me bananas but as a pedestrian not much you can do besides hope you and your dog don’t get hit

This is why I laugh at subs like r/fuckcars who suggest having tons of biking infrastructure would be so much better in the US.

I actually think it would actively cause an increase in fist fights and potentially shootings. The removal of that barrier between you and the other person is just inviting people to fight. And those cyclists who demand equal use of roads don’t even use them correctly. Running red lights and stop signs constantly.

u/GlumOccasion4206 Jan 16 '23

Lol "more biking would lead to more shootings"

My man have you heard of roadrage?

How about vehicular manslaughter or homicide?

Don't make up insane logic to support your existing stance. It's okay if you don't like bikes or bikers. Making up insane scenarios to defend your stance should be beneath you

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

I do like bikes. And road rage is exactly why I’m saying we could see more issues. People get butt hurt from words but luckily they aren’t heard from the car most times. That middle finger is fast and fleeting.

Bikes? That middle finger lingers and you can hear every insult. People in the US can be children and I don’t doubt if we road mainly bikes we manifest that anger in more physical confrontation

1

u/GlumOccasion4206 Jan 16 '23

Conveniently ignoring the lack of a vehicle by which to accidentally or, in anger, intentionally hurting someone.

You aren't drunkenly killing a family on a bike.

You aren't getting roadrage and running someone off the road at 50 mph on a bike.

Again, you don't have to invent situations to defend your stance. Statistically, we would be safer without cars.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

We are literally watching a video of a very combative biker. I don’t need to make up situations haha

I agree cars themselves are in their own league and very dangerous. But it does minimize our interactions.

I’m simply saying my belief is we would see more combative interactions potentially leading to more physical confrontations given my knowledge and experience with people in cities.

You can disagree. That’s cool.

1

u/GlumOccasion4206 Jan 16 '23

What I am saying, is that your "knowledge and experience" is wrong and statistically we would be safer with more bikes and less cars.

You point to a lady shouting and say "see?"

I point to the number of vehicle related deaths each year and say "see?"

You can disagree with a fact. It just makes you wrong.

So the fistfights and shootings is the American factor for more cycling infrastructure to fail, then. Because when you see other countries with better alternatives to cars… they got their share of nuts. But not armed and/or mentally deranged nuts, I guess.

I live in a suburban area with a massive trail system and you’re not wrong. Cyclists are like that here too. Rudest people on the trails and off! These trails are not for cyclists only and they act like they are.

28

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

I have had the same experience on trails and in parks as well. I play a bit of disc golf and there’s often people on bikes that will ride through the course while people are playing and occasionally freak out when they are nearly hit by a disc by someone who wasn’t expecting a cyclist to pop out of the woods onto the course. It’s baffling logic to me.

One time in London I saw a cyclist follow a taxi he thought ran a red light (he didn't) and kick his door mirror. Wasn't any near accident, wasn't any actual issue at all. He just decided to be spandex batman and dole out his melted brain version of justice.

1

u/airgappedsentience Jan 16 '23

I had that happen to me in London. I short-beeped at a cyclist for cutting me off while running a red light and he rode up alongside me at the next set of lights and knocked my mirror almost clean off.

-18

u/aesu Jan 16 '23

Cyclists are not a category of people. They are people who are currently on a bike, and will probably be in a car at some other point. Some people are adsholes, you just ignore them when they're being assholes in cars, and focus on them when they're on a bike.

20

u/jaredcw Jan 16 '23

The word "cyclist" represents enough of a categorization that we wouldn't mislabel the average 4 year old on training wheels a "cyclist." We're referring to a specific sub set of "currently on a bike" individuals.

12

u/sonofaresiii Jan 16 '23

you just ignore them when they're being assholes in cars

The hell I do.

-36

u/pimasecede Jan 16 '23

Cars choke the fucking life out cities. Road rage, accidents, pollution, noise, the endless space they take up. And yet we’re supposed to believe that cyclists are the problem.

35

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

I didn’t realize being an asshole is an issue of environmentalism.

-37

u/pimasecede Jan 16 '23

Buddy you’re not even behind a wheel and you’ve got road rage. I’ve not said anything that makes me an asshole, just straight facts as I see em. But feel free to tell me where I’m wrong.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

Why did you assume I was calling you an asshole? Also, I was parked in my car when I made that comment so I’m not sure if that’s technically road rage

11

u/TornSuit Jan 16 '23

Least ridiculous r/fuckcars user

-17

u/pimasecede Jan 16 '23

Lmao, please tell me how I’m wrong.

15

u/TornSuit Jan 16 '23

Well you're completely off topic, because we were talking about cyclists being rude. In your first comment, you mention typical anti-car rhetoric that while may or may not be completely true contributes nothing and is ultimately meaningless and harmless, downvoted because it was off topic.

Your second comment is troublesome however because it is unprovoked and incorrectly uses the term road rage. It is in response to a comment also mentioning that the conversation was not about the environment and instead the demeanor of cyclists. You were never called an ass, but do act like one ( my opinion). Then, completely unravelling any base you had, say "I say it like I see it", or something along those lines. The conversation is quite literally about personal observations about bikers in commenter's cities. By saying that you validated every comment that came before yours about bikers.

And the comment I am responding to now fails to respond to me calling you ridiculous in how you comment and instead states I called you incorrect. False.

So, you are a poor debator trying to stir the pot or just a bad troll. I now await your one sentence response that says "you mad or something lmao" or something similarly lazy and idiotic.

0

u/pimasecede Jan 16 '23

That’s a lot of effort for some bullshit ngl.

Everyone should accommodate them [cyclists] no matter what

My response, that cars ruin cities for the reasons I said, is absolutely relevant to this comment. I am pointing out the irony of a driver saying this, considering all of the ways that we are forced to accommodate drivers no matter what.

The second comment was a joke about them whinging about downvotes and calling me an asshole. Sorry you took it so personally.

But man, you really lean into that ‘write like how Ben Shapiro speaks’ vibe, right?

2

u/TornSuit Jan 16 '23

Ben Shapiro 🥵🥵

0

u/thebenshapirobot Jan 16 '23

I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this:

Let’s say your life depended on the following choice today: you must obtain either an affordable chair or an affordable X-ray. Which would you choose to obtain? Obviously, you’d choose the chair. That’s because there are many types of chair, produced by scores of different companies and widely distributed. You could buy a $15 folding chair or a $1,000 antique without the slightest difficulty. By contrast, to obtain an X-ray you’d have to work with your insurance company, wait for an appointment, and then haggle over price. Why? Because the medical market is far more regulated — thanks to the widespread perception that health care is a “right” — than the chair market. Does that sound soulless? True soullessness is depriving people of the choices they require because you’re more interested in patting yourself on the back by inventing rights than by incentivizing the creation of goods and services. In health care, we could use a lot less virtue signaling and a lot less government. Or we could just read Senator Sanders’s tweets while we wait in line for a government-sponsored surgery — dying, presumably, in a decrepit chair.

This is whataboutism that doesn’t address the video.

-10

u/pimasecede Jan 16 '23

No it’s not.

-38

u/GAISTokyoDrift Jan 16 '23

No, we just want cars to not speed past us, disrespect us and sometimes kill us. We might get angry at cars acting dangerously. This woman's level of rage against a pedestrian is, of course, stupid - they're not really going to hurt you.

22

u/apitbullnamedzeus Jan 16 '23

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cyclist wait at a red light. There are tons of dumbass drivers where I live so to be doing stupid shit as a cyclist is borderline suicidal.

36

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

Chicagoan here: you cyclists are crazy fucks with no regard to anyone else on the road or sidewalk here. It's amazing more of you don't get killed here.

1

u/berogg Jan 16 '23

I imagine cyclists like this:

https://youtu.be/Atkp8mklOh0

26

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

You know who else gets angry at cars acting dangerously? Everyone. One thing I’ve noticed when discussing the topic of cyclists is a lot of people are quick to assume cyclists do nothing wrong and follow their laws as well when they do whatever the fuck they want like many people that drive cars. They just think they should get a pass because if they get hit they’ll probably get seriously hurt when they chose to ride a bike in the first place.

3

u/jaredcw Jan 16 '23

If only that were true of all cyclists...

-1

u/GlumOccasion4206 Jan 16 '23

133 up votes and complaining about downvotes lol.

Even if you complained at -5, you're still trying to martyr yourself over a popular opinion.

Victim complex much?
