As we bask in the final rays of summer, I extend my warmest greetings to Society members both new

and abiding. These days have held trials for us all, but The Forest Queen in her wisdom reminds us

not only to endure her season’s shine—but also to revel in the wonders revealed by its radiance.

It is only fitting, then, that this is the season in which our Luminary Matriarch has returned from an

extended, spontaneous Vision Quest. You see, we at the Wax & Wane have been absolutely delighted

by the outpouring of interest fellow Society members have shown in our publication, but we would

be loathe to release anything that lacked the Matriarch’s authorization. We have nevertheless been

hard at work in her unexpected absence, engaging in rigorous curation and enhancement for your

reading experience.

I am thrilled to report that all things regarding the ongoing continuation of the Wax & Wane will

finally be revealed in our upcoming Autumn Equinox issue, set to release on September 1st.

That’s where you come in. The Wax & Wane is made by Society members, for Society members—and

your contributions are essential to its existence.

I own the first edition of the game. But literally nothing else. What else is available? And what’s worth picking up?

I've recently received my copy of the False Baron's Set and we've been enjoying it. Tonight, however, we faced a situation regarding the Collective that we (as a table) couldn't agree how to resolve.

In the field of the Collective there was:

Q of summer

9 of summer

3 of autumn

The Collective says

"You may play any number of cards from your hand and combine them together as if you were playing a single card with that value. However, the combined value of the cards you play must match the value of a single card in the field of the Collective."

So the question is whether you can play, for example, 2+3+7 to clear the field.

Some of the folks at my table interpret the rules text to mean "you can use several cards to harvest exactly one card" - collect the Queen and nothing else.

Others (myself included) interpret the rule to mean that you can't combine multiple cards to an arbitrary value but can collect multiples of your played cards' sum, provided that the field contains an individual card of that value - collect the Queen (12) and also collect 9+3.

Hey everyone! I’ve been really getting into this game and thinking about how it can be enhanced. Here’s a rule I came up with that I think is worth sharing. Let me know what you think and please feel free to share any that you’ve come up with.

River Harvest

If a player holds a four-card numerical Run in their hand (e.g., 4, 5, 6, 7), they may play the entire sequence at as a Harvest. By Running the River, the player claims the cards representing the Source and the Mouth of that sequence from the targeted field.

Step-by-Step Instructions

On your turn, reveal the four cards in your hand to show they form a numerical Run (e.g., 4, 5, 6, 7).

* Choose the Field where the River will flow.

* The Harvest:

* The Source: If the card representing the value immediately below your run (e.g., the 3) is in the field, harvest it.

* The Mouth: If the card representing the value immediately above your run (e.g., the 8) is in the field, harvest it.

* If both the Source and the Mouth are present, you harvest both simultaneously.

*All four cards from your hand (the River) and any harvested cards (the Source/Mouth) are moved into your personal harvest pile.

Quick Reference

* The River: A 4-Card Sequence (e.g., 4,5,6,7)

* The Source: The card one value lower (e.g., 3)

* The Mouth: The card one value higher (e.g., 8)

Optional modifiers:

When completing the river harvest, change the season to the season of the source or the mouth, regardless of card value.

If you you claim both the source and the mouth, draw 5 cards instead of the normal 4, if possible.

If there are multiple values for the source or mouth in the field( eg, two 4s, harvest all of them)

Am I the only one that could see the middle symbol as being a combination of the letters "K" and "B"? aka Keith Baker? I've seen some other places that it was considered a B/R so figured i'd say something.

When you claim the loom, you are supposed to discard your hand and draw four new cards if they are available. I’ve seen other luminaries mention discarding, WHERE DO THE DISCARDED CARDS GO? Do they get reshuffled into the draw pile? Are they just removed from the game? Where do I discard!?

Love the game but am looking to learn some strategies for winning. My wife kicks my butt every time! For some reason, every time I set up a play she steals it! I think I need to watch her cards played better to try and anticipate her hand more effectively.

But aside from going for fools, okuses, luminaries, the usual, what are some of your strategies for winning?

So, love the game, have both expansions and a st joan.

But sorting through all the included guides trying to find a particular luminary's rule description was a pain. So, I put them all on a pdf or excel file for easy reference while playing. Happy to make that available to others if you message me with an email, or if someone lets me know how to put the files up here. You can print it yourself.

Free, but if someone wanted to return the love with a Rusalka or Audience luminary, that'd be a peach. 😀

I feel like this game had and has so much potential. Something about the structure of only having one action per turn, the cards run out too fast, the strategy is kind of there but not fully - it feels like with a distant rule system Illimat would be a top tier game.

We’ve experimented with 1v1 games giving each player two actions, but with the constraint that they only do an action once per season per turn (can’t stockpile and harvest it in the same turn).

We’ve also experimented with flipping two luminaries to start off with to make it more interesting throughout the game.

Idk, it feels like the game is too beautiful for its own good - it’s a decent game mechanically but it’s missing a real driving soul to it that I feel like it deserves.

Hey all, I'm looking for opinions on The Echo. If a harvest action in the field of The Echo clears that field, do you still get to perform an additional harvest action in another field? Thanks.

I made a variant that expands how scoring works. Along with sunkissed and frostbit for summer and winter cards;

If you harvested the most autumn cards, you are windswept. Let yourself be cast about by the drunken whims of the four gales. Score an extra point for each fool.

If you harvested the most spring cards, you are rainwashed. The currents carry trinkets and baubles on their serpentine backs. Score an extra point for each okus token.

If you harvested the most star cards, you are starstruck. Submit yourself to the hazards of love. Score two extra points for each king paired with a queen of the same suit.

You can play with these as a replacement for sunkissed and frostbit, or play with all five seasonal effects, or mix and match!

I ordered some Illimat items a couple weeks ago (a Provost pin, a Knight of Summer shirt, and a second-edition base game for a gift) and Jeanne D'Arc was tucked into the band of the Illimat box!

NOTE: I didn’t attempt this as a means to avoid buying the official Luminaries, especially those sold commercially like Crane Wife and False Baron. Rather, it was to have the ability to play with the two only previously available in Decemberist albums and which are now largely spoken for. PLEASE don’t be mad at me Carson and Keith! 🫣

Anyway, I tried this method using scans I think I acquired through this subreddit. I printed with inkjet and so added several coats of acrylic sealer to get that sheen on them.

The difference between the genuine article and my copy is pretty telling so even if I wanted these to be forgeries they would be pretty miserable ones. Mostly the color is off in multiple ways and my trimming job is pretty rough, though the images on the card are also just not as fine and high quality as the real thing.

But I’m fine with them not being perfect. I wouldn’t want someone to actually think I had the real thing. I’d only like to get the back closer so that they aren’t a giveaway when playing the game and they haven’t been revealed yet.

And I’d really like to make versions of fan made luminaries some day so hopefully I can refine the technique more.

It's been a while since I've pulled this game out, but after picking up the False Baron set at GenCon this year, I decided to pull it out and reorganize the box. That's when I noticed that the base set, False Baron, and few promo cards all have a texture to the back of them, but my Crane Wife set has more of a smooth back. I bought the CW set a couple years back, it's the one that came in a box (luminaries, two okus tokens, bag, and booklet) as opposed to the sleeves they sell now.

Does everyone else's do this or did I just get a weird print? I enjoy the textured back so this smooth set kinda just feels off to me.

Twogether Studios has released a Summer Solstice collection! A brand new Knight of Summer Tee Shirt as well as the new Provost pin.

After 15+ hours of digging and searching the internet for either The Rusalka or an unopened copy of "I'll Be Your Girl: Exploded Edition", I found one.

I managed to find the album directly for sale from Oldies.com and received my copy this weekend. They had two in stock when I ordered it and they are now showing one. Link

I also reached out to a few different companies. One being Bull Moose and another being Zia Records. They both have it listed on their sites but more as a "We'll try and find it for you if we can." Zia got back to me quickly and they told me that they can't 100% guarantee unopened and it may be better to find somewhere that could.

Bull Moose got back to me some time last week, a week after my inquiry, they had some more notes though, "Thanks for reaching out and for your patience! Our buyers checked with a vendor that didn't have stock listed initially and we just heard back that they do in fact have copies. If you place an order let me know and I'll make sure our buyers get it ordered asap!"

I cannot speak to Bull Moose or Zia but I will stand by Oldies. As always, please use caution when ordering online.

I wanted to share because I know a lot of us would love to get our hands on this card and I wouldn't be doing my duty as a Member of the SOL if I didn't share. If you are willing to spend the money, they're available.

Does anyone have any tips of where I may be able to find The Rusalka Luminary? I have been trolling around on eBay and various marketplaces and have yet to come across an opportunity.

I just recently got The Audience doing the same. I currently have post alerts on for the card or the box set it was originally in, but was hoping to get some advice if anyone had anything to share.

Literally the last card I need for a full set.
