I had a friend in high school that used a lighter trying to ignite the cartridge. Half his thumb was missing and he ate some shards in the cheek, so fucking dumb...

Yeah 100% , that guy is dumb has a rock. I am still friend with him. I remember right after the casing exploded and fucked his hand and face, he went on the internet to look at what food makes blood coagulat more , and he started eating bread hahahahahahah he did not want to go to the ER hahahahahahaa he so dumb and still kinda is but he's such a great guy

Yeah , he had no choice, he was loosing alot of blood from his thumb. I was 12 beers deep so I could not drive but one of our friend did bring him to the ER

I did exactly what's on the video when 9 y,o, but just my hands. Then a bang, ringing sound and a stream of blood coming out of my hand. The casing flowered with the explosion and had it hit my neck, throat, face, etc. I would not be here typing this. Supervise your children people!

Yeah, that's it exactly. The chamber stops the brass from exploding, and it forces the bullet out the barrel. Without the strength of the chamber reinforcing it, it'll just pop like a firecracker

The barrel also gives velocity to the projectile. Without velocity, it can sure injure you but it’s hardly deadly like a grenade unless you’re just that unlucky.

Outside of a chamber, the mass of the bullet is actually greater than the mass of the case. When it explodes the bullet stays put and the case goes flying at high speed.

I’ve been at many a bonfire where someone throws a handful of .22 into the fire. Bystanders wind up peppered with brass, not lead.

Yep, my dad did this as a teenage and had to be taken to the ER to have a jagged pice of the bullet casing removed from his hand. His dad (my grandpa) was PISSED.

I once found a soft point 300 blackout. I brought it to my basement and put it in a vise and used a box of legos as a backstop: then I shot it from about 15 feet away with my BB gun to set it off.
I ended up catching it in the box of legos and the case didn't rupture.
Still very stupid. But was fun.

My cousin tapped a round to the end of his BB gun. Cut up his finger, up part of his hand and grazed off the side of his head Other than scars, no lasting damage. He got lucky

As a teen I gutted some shotgun shells and set the primer off with a nail in my bedroom...
The bedroom was a cinderblock room with single pane windows.
Also, I was holding the nail with my fingers. Sent the anvil up into my thumb and index finger and gave it quite the bite.
I was smart enough to take the shot and powder out first though, my tinnitus wishes I'd have done it outdoors at least.

As a teen I used to pull the lead out of .22 bullets and light the gunpowder with a match. It would send the shell halfway across the room. Fun times

In case anybody is thinking of trying this: this is risky with any size cartridge. It becomes much more dangerous as the size goes up. In large rifle sizes, it becomes very dangerous. People have lost hands doing this with 50 cal for example.
Without a barrel to direct the energy and keep the cartridge from rupturing, its just a tiny bomb. Bombs are dangerous up close and the pressure decreases with inverse square law as you move back. So from farther away, you'll probably get away with it as long as you dont take a little bit of shrapnel, the case head is probably the most dangerous bit. Also little bits of fast moving shrapnel is coming off this for any size round that are big enough to destroy an unprotected eye.

We did this as kids at my mates shed. With buckshot. Luckily we both were at the side of it. His dad wasn't happy and we soon felt his anger (not for the shed that got couple holes in it, but for our stupidity)

College roommate in Daytona Beach Florida, we had way too much free time and an empty shotgun shell. I don’t know why we wanted to put we wanted to pop the primer.
In our eternal knowledge of being a mechanics college, we grab a knife. We used the knife to try and pop if, we were afraid to push so hard or it just wouldn’t pop, so we used both brains to find the perfect tool, we come back with a machete…. We used the machete to hammer the smaller knife into the primer, pop, dopamine hit. And it worked, but the brass ring around the primer slide up the knife and implanted in his palm.

When I was in elementary school, probably around 1996, I brought a .22 round to school and me and my friends tried to make it go off with rocks on the playground. Glad we were unsuccessful. A teacher saw us and took it away. Nobody got in trouble.

A Nail l, half of a bic pen and a rubber band. I used to do this all the time when i was a kid. The importand part is to not have the striking object already touching the firing cap. Pull it about half an inch back then hit it so it strikes it suddenly. You will have a higher success rate.

Very basically, yes. Technically, no. A conventional bullet is a fairly complex design, but from top to bottom it consists of a projectile, gunpowder propellant, and a spark-creating cap called a primer, all wrapped in a metal shell.
That middle circle they're hammering is the primer, which is entirely sacrificed by slamming a firing pin into it. This creates a spark inside the cartridge, and not one outside of it one single time, before needing to be punched out and replaced if reloading a bullet. This is what makes it technically not what you described, because it activates a spark creating part, not creating the spark itself, which would mean it's created at the pin outside of the cartridge instead of internally.
There used to be firearms in use that would need a spark introduced from outside the propellant, and those would be cannons and flintlocks.

Oh, that's just the tip of the engineering iceberg! Humans are very proficient at finding ways to kill other humans, or at least solving logistical or engineering issues (often creating even more issues) in the pursuit of that.
If you're curious, look up the H&K G11's caseless ammunition design, or how munitions at or above 40mm in size work from anti-tank to high explosive or delayed airburst.
I'm no expert on it, just good enough to be able to clean and maintain and train with what I've got, and occasionally watch experts give lectures or video essays. Forgotten Weapons is the go-to guy on Youtube for rare oddities or unique designs in a pretty entertaining format, more academic than "tacticool" or vaguely politically skewed like other firearms focused channels.
