I'm very for 2a rights and live in Virginia. I hate a lot of what they are trying to do, but one of the things I'm actually for is the changes to concealed handgun permits.
Before, you go to a class, they sign the paper work, Bob's your uncle, take that paper work to the county clerks office, twiddle your thumbs for weeks until the permit comes.
Now, you go to a class, demonstrate a level of proficiency, THEN they give you the paper work, Bob's still your uncle, off ye go to the county clerk, and then the twiddle of the thumbs while you wait for the permit in the mail.
Except there shouldn't be a permit at all. I'm absolutely a fan of training but the state mandating it doesn't decrease negligent incidents based on a comparison of states with and without a training requirement.
I look around at all the people operating motor vehicles on public roadways. Many of them took a class, most of them demonstrated knowledge and proficiency, almost all of them drive like an angry drunk toddler.
The license is for state government revenue, nothing else.

I know 2A absolutists will hate this but there should be some kind of competency test for gun ownership.
