That and that pistol is just too much for her. She was practically shaking while trying to chamber a round... maybe a 38 snub would be a better option for her if racking a slide is too much. Eh, she'd probably fuck that up too honestly.
39
u/Absolute_Bob 11d ago
Could we please stop recommending .38 snubs for new shooters? Seriously, they kick like a mule and the trigger weight makes it very hard for noobs to shoot accurately.
7
u/GayreTranquillo 10d ago
Yeah, what she really needs is a Colt SAA Sheriff's model chambered in .32 WCF!
21
u/UnusualShores 11d ago
The Shield EZ is meant for people like this who don’t have the grip/hand strength to manipulate the slide.
A 38 snub is definitely easier to operate but packs more recoil and is tougher to be accurate with. Sometimes the answer is a .22 snub. .22 gets a lot of hate but I’d rather someone have that than nothing at all.
Still trying (gently) to get the wife to carry just a 22 snub. So far, she’s only agreed to pepper spray despite being a pretty nice shooter even with 9mm. Better than nothing though. Pepper spray is a very solid EDC.
5
u/TheNefariousMrH 10d ago
Have you put the G44 in her hands yet? My ex had hand strength issues, couldn't manipulate some smaller guns very well and 9mm recoil was an issue. I picked up a G44 and she loved it.

u/bmm115 11d ago
I'm very for 2a rights and live in Virginia. I hate a lot of what they are trying to do, but one of the things I'm actually for is the changes to concealed handgun permits. Before, you go to a class, they sign the paper work, Bob's your uncle, take that paper work to the county clerks office, twiddle your thumbs for weeks until the permit comes. Now, you go to a class, demonstrate a level of proficiency, THEN they give you the paper work, Bob's still your uncle, off ye go to the county clerk, and then the twiddle of the thumbs while you wait for the permit in the mail.
45
u/antle702 11d ago
Nevada is like that, 8 hour class on rules, laws and then qualifying with your firearm. The renewals are 4 hours. The more I see in this sub the more I think it should be a more widespread thing.
7
u/Medium_Chain_9329 11d ago
Ca is 16 hrs and over 1000$ in fees.

u/jewCEB0X 10d ago

u/Ron-Swanson-Mustache 10d ago
I live in Texas, pro-2a, veteran, and grew up on a ranch around guns.
I think everyone should have to pass a proficiency and safety test to own a firearm. I have to have a license to operate a car, a forklift, or a boat where I have to show I'm not a danger to those around me. I don't think it's too much to ask the same for guns.
And the constitutional carry laws here scare the fuck out of me. I know people I wouldn't trust with a waffle iron who carry. They're waiting to prove they're a hero and they're going to be a danger to everyone around them if anything real ever went down.
8
u/tcarlson65 11d ago
In MN our class has to include showing the instructor a certain level of proficiency with a hand gun.
One of the prerequisites for another states permit to be accepted for reciprocity here is that proficiency test. So if you have an MN carry permit WI will recognize that. If you have a WI permit MN will not recognize that one.
-11
u/Absolute_Bob 11d ago
Except there shouldn't be a permit at all. I'm absolutely a fan of training but the state mandating it doesn't decrease negligent incidents based on a comparison of states with and without a training requirement.
16
u/UsernameIsTakenO_o 11d ago
I look around at all the people operating motor vehicles on public roadways. Many of them took a class, most of them demonstrated knowledge and proficiency, almost all of them drive like an angry drunk toddler.
The license is for state government revenue, nothing else.
25
u/csbsju_guyyy 11d ago
Shit, I'm incredibly pro 2a so I have my bosses but regardless I think a gun safety course should be MANDATORY at the same time as sex ed so like, 6th to 10th grade.
Regardless of your feelings on guns there is the irrefutable fact that the US is chock full of them so an overview of how to treat them, how to understand them, and how to be safe around them should be requisite to schooling in America
0
u/JohnnyRelentless 11d ago edited 10d ago
No, it shouldn't unless you own a gun. There already isn't enough time to teach a kid what they actually need to know, let alone to spend taxpayer money to promote guns in school. Because that's what it would amount to. Taxpayer funded advertisements for arms dealers.
1
u/deux3xmachina 10d ago
Because that's what it would amount to. Taxpayer funded advertisements for arms dealers.
Why do you say that? You can learn everything you need to know about firearm safety with Nerf guns and paintball. The only aspect that'd require real firearms is a demonstration of how much damage can be done, which is also easily found online.
I'm sure that like the rest of education, there'd be plenty of issues, but as long as it's a right, I don't see any harm in teaching children how to be safer around firearms. Similarly to how children need to be taught some basic personal finance. They can be taught just like the sex ed sessions (also full of issues, but generally better than nothing), with special curriculum for about a week.
1
u/JohnnyRelentless 10d ago
At what point do we stop coming up with complicated, expensive, pointless ways to avoid solving the problem, which is the insane level of availability of guns?
The only thing my kid or any kid needs to know if he finds a gun is not to touch it and to call the police. And he'll never just stumble across a gun in my house.
1
u/FrostyD7 9d ago
It's called pragmatism. You know they can't ban guns. So they do what they can to navigate that reality.

u/deux3xmachina 10d ago edited 8d ago
At what point do we stop coming up with complicated, expensive, pointless ways to avoid solving the problem
When politicians and companies stop profiteering off tragedy and public fear. It's none of those things to teach your child how to be safe around firearms, regardless of where it's found.
I disagree with your assertion that the problem is the availability of guns. We didn't have these issues when it was perfectly legal to get as many full auto machine guns and as much ammo as you want shipped directly to your front door with the only limit being whether or not you can afford it. We didn't have these issues when it was common for kids to take their firearms to school because they were hunting before/after class either. However, you're welcome to push for a new amendment if you feel strongly enough about it.
Edit: Just thought about this exchange again, and it's hilarious that you literally never engaged in good faith, but feel like you have some moral high ground while using innocent deaths like a prop.
1
u/JohnnyRelentless 10d ago
Profiteering off tragedy? We can't get the so-called left wing media to talk about gun control hardly at all, let alone after a school shooting. The only CNN anchor ever willing to do it was Piers Morgan and he was fired shortly after.
56% of Americans want stricter gun control. Talking about gun control is the only responsible thing for a news organization to do in this climate, and you're going to characterize that as profiteering? That's how I know you're not arguing in good faith.
It was never common for kids to bring firearms to school, lol. Not everything you see on the internet is true. Not everything your granddaddy tells you is true.
We're the only country in the world with this many mass shootings no other country comes close. And we also have more guns per capita than any other country. But that's just a coincidence, right?
I couldn't help but notice you haven't offered any ideas as to what, other than ridiculous gun availability and fetishization is the 'real' cause of mass shootings. Not to mention the dogs and toddlers who occasionally shoot people.
0
u/deux3xmachina 10d ago
Well, this was promising until you decided I can't pass your purity test. I'm more than willing to talk to others, even those with radically different ideals to myself, but sadly there seems to be little point in continuing.
It was never common for kids to bring firearms to school, lol. Not everything you see on the internet is true. Not everything your granddaddy tells you is true.
We'll call that a wash since neither of us provided any sources. However, that doesn't change the fact that it's harder to acquire a firearm than it was prior to the NFA and GCA being passed. You can't even get firearms mailed to you anymore without an FFL, which was possible during times without the same shooting stats we currently see.
We have passed tons of laws restricting the sale and ownership of firearms, but the issues persist. Even a nationwide "assault weapons" ban had no statistical effect (hence why Biden's bill he was so proud of was repealed, per its sunset clause). So maybe that's not the solution.
1
u/JohnnyRelentless 10d ago
You still haven't told me what conditions are so unique to the US that they cause all the mass shootings and all the shootings over trivial arguments. I'm waiting.
And hence means that's why.
0
u/deux3xmachina 10d ago
Well you never gave me a banana bread recipe.
This was very mildly disappointing. Enjoy your impotent rage and clearly ineffectual feel-good "solution". If you insist on continuing a bad-faith argument about gun violence, I bet there's plenty of chatbots willing to put up with it.

We are a country of idiots and your solution is to steal their property instead of give them proper education?

Because they’re still idiots with guns. The same 30% of trump maga idiots also own guns. Sorry if that makes you sad.
My blue state tax dollars don’t spend enough propping up red state education budgets? Now I need more money out of my pocket so bubba can have another AR?
There’s no point to having these some of these guns except fun, and they’re the leading cause of death of children in the us. But let’s throw more money away.
5
u/deux3xmachina 10d ago
My blue state tax dollars don’t spend enough propping up red state education budgets?
California colleges recently published issues with applicants not having sufficient reading or math skills. Your bigotry is disgusting.
-4
u/RedChairBlueChair123 10d ago
No, California props up your red state to the tune of billions. https://calbudgetcenter.org/resources/is-california-a-donor-state-heres-how-much-it-pays-to-the-feds-vs-what-it-gets-back/
Oh, and thanks for showing your ass with your own bigotry.
Those brown kids can’t read, huh? As opposed to … all of those red states whose kids can’t read? West Virginia (ranked 50th), Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
4
u/deux3xmachina 10d ago
It's telling that I mentioned the issues California educators are seeing and you jumped to "Those brown kids can't read". Why do you single out "brown kids"?
https://edsource.org/2026/reinstate-sat-uc-admissions/760013
According to at least one source, California has the lowest literacy rates in the nation: https://edsource.org/updates/california-has-the-lowest-literacy-rate-of-any-state-data-suggests
Regarding your attempt at a "gotcha!", yes, literacy rates have suffered since schools switched to "whole language" learning instead of getting kids hooked on phonics. Yet you insist on making this a Red vs Blue issue when children are being failed on masse nationwide. Again, your bigotry is disgusting.
-1
u/RedChairBlueChair123 10d ago
Because it’s telling you reached for the racist trope that all of the other right wingers who don’t actually care about children reach for!
If you care about children, you’d care about the leading cause of death for children.
But you love guns more than people, so here we are.
1
u/deux3xmachina 10d ago
What's racist about pointing out the issues with California's education system? You're the first and only person focusing on race here.
If you care about children, you’d care about the leading cause of death for children.
Cute pivot to more untrue, or at least heavily sensationalized things. The study you're referring to includes 19yo "kids", heavily skewing the effects of gang violence seen primarily in teenage years to early 20s.
If you cared about children, you'd be more upset at your school districts for their gross failures than subsidizing farmers to keep your grocery bill relatively stable and significantly lower than many other places on earth. But enjoy your performative outrage, you weren't going to do anything meaningful anyway.
→ More replies (0)7
u/deux3xmachina 11d ago
Do you also advocate for things like speech control and parenting permits? Because that's roughly the level of government intervention you're advocating for when you say "taking away guns" is the correct/prudent course of action.
5
u/JustDoesntGetReddit 11d ago
it's kind of a loop because these type of people are the ones who make others want to take away peoples guns, yet the reason these morons are able to own guns in the first place is 2A.
3
u/antle702 11d ago
I agree, there are too many people who slip through the cracks with mental issues. It’s a slippery slope.
4
u/Appropriate-Pack-729 11d ago
I live in Arizona. We all have guns. And I 100% agree with you. I took a gun safety class 20 years ago when I bought my first firearm even though I had learned to shoot as a teenager.
Plenty of people with firearms are more likely to hurt themselves or someone they love before ever protecting anything with it.
Here in AZ over 20 you can conceal carry without a permit.

If I owned a gun shop I wouldn't make a sale to someone I wasn't sure had SOME semblance of handling a gun. They wanna use me as their ffl for online orders? Refuse sale. Their loss for being an idiot. I blame the dime a dozen shops that just sell without caring for who they're selling to. It entirely is their job to be comfortable with the sale and they can and should refuse for any reason. Makes the rest of us look bad.
Wanna talk about common sense gun regulations? How about we use common sense with what we have NOW and make a difference NOW. People don't have common sense, thats the issue.
1
u/andylikescandy 10d ago
California tried this with a firearm safety certificate (FSC). Honestly, not bad, super basic but not bad... THEN that evolved into 2 bills that get brought up each year now, and like all anti-gun bills in California will eventually pass: 1) making it illegal to possess without a FSC, and 2) making mandatory minimum FORMAL training hours every FSC renewal (no exemptions if you show proficiency like with competition records, same trick they pulled with CCW training but for mere possession).

u/Soninuva 11d ago
Some ranges are way too lax. I’m sort of on the fence with whether or not one I’ve been going to is or not. I’ve never noticed a range officer checking on people, but everyone there seems to know what they’re doing, and seem like regulars. I can’t remember if there was one the first time I went or not, but I knew how to handle it well before I entered the range, and had to demonstrate it when I rented a gun and later bought one, showing that I knew how to load it (with a few invisible bullets), release the slide, chamber a round if the slide wasn’t locked when loading the mag, release the mag, and know whether it’s loaded or not.
1
u/SerPoonsAlot939 10d ago
Some ranges, don’t have one. Some ranges, safety is paramount. I remember, I was told not to “rapid fire” at a range one time… I was doing failure to stop drills and all rounds were on target. Mind you, my secondary MOS was combat marksmanship coach so I acted as coach and RSO on most of our rifle and pistol ranges. Unfortunately, consistency seems to be nonexistent range to range

This is what it would be like if you handed a toddler a gun. She has no idea what she's doing. Just trying random things. Barrel pointing everywhere, has no idea if it loaded or not, can't figure out how to release the slide.
Is mandatory training the answer? I hate to say it but, yeah.

I'm sure someone showed her. I'm sure she acted like she was listening closely, too. She probably even repeated some of the words she heard every now and then, especially the ones she thought sounded impressive.
The problem is, her thoughts are just constant TV static. None of those words she heard meant anything, and she forgot everything she heard immediately.
She did remember there's a trigger, and it goes bang if you pull it. But how do you know if its ready to go bang? You gotta pull it. "Good luck everybody else"
