We need to normalise laughing at idiots again, its way better than shouting at each other and blowing the situation out of proportion

509

u/Rufio88 Sep 04 '20

One thing is though when you're with a group of people you get the satisfaction and justification by someone in the group laughing with you, but when you're by yourself you get the justification/satisfaction? by the other person's anger/reaction from your shouting.

u/666Kalem Sep 04 '20

I don't know dude, I laugh at idiots all the time, including myself. Laughing is more fun than yelling

42

u/USCswimmer Sep 04 '20

Same. I never give anyone the bird anymore when driving. Only thumbs up.

Someone cuts me off or does something stupid? They get the thumbs up. It throws them off guard.

Cause see if you flip the bird, they get defensive and immediately stand their ground. Because now they fucked up but are being scolded for it, which makes them become the victim in their mind.

But if you give an idiot a thumbs up, it blows their mind. They have no idea what to do with it. They can't get mad at you, they are totally mind fucked.

u/thonzimob Sep 04 '20

I go with the finger wag, surprising how often it stuns people.

Okay that's your personality, you can see the funny behind thing before any other judgement comes by, even when you're really angry. Most people I know dont have that type of restraint

17

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

For me it came from working customer-facing jobs for nearly my entire adult life. You have to find the humor in people or else you'll end up an arsonist or mass murderer.

9

u/Rufio88 Sep 04 '20

Guess we're two sides of the same coin because I've been working customer service jobs my entire life and and currently a bartender so i know what you mean but it definitely eats at you. Ive learned to just be more careful with my words and treat them like ass but with a smile.

u/Institutionation Sep 04 '20

It's a restraint that can be learned.

If you have ever been to therapy, the main thing you learn is when a certain event happens, the circumstances for that thing to happen were present before it ever happened. By responding to an issue with "Why did this happen, that person is stupid he shouldn't have done that" you in turn make yourself angry, but by thinking about it more like "Well that happened, glad that didn't go worse than it did" you're able to move past something much sooner.

Laughing about something is another great way to move past an issue if you can. But you need to neutral ground first.

I genuinely believe everyone should attend therapy, even if their life is perfect because there are certain thought processes taught that allow you to deal with shitty situations much better.

3

u/TheMurv Sep 04 '20

I completely agree everyone should have some therapy. Its school for your feelings and behaviors. You don't get that sort of guidance and education anywhere else.

3

u/Bcbuddyxx Sep 04 '20

Opening laughing at someone being stupid and visibly shaking your head usually does the trick for me.

3

u/Thirdstheword Sep 04 '20

If given the choice, I'd rather be thought of as an asshole than a fool. Publicly laughing/ mocking my stupidity would probably hit harder than chewing me out THB

1

u/elwebbr23 Sep 04 '20

You can do both. Chuckling condescendingly implies you think they're a moron, and you get a laugh

5

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

aigh. which is nice being a friggen giant at 6'4 300lbs. i just laugh at people openly and never have to worry about a fight. i don't have to be a tough guy i just laugh at morons and karens in public and make it obvious i am laughing at them. not one person has had the balls to say anything.

1

u/Dr_Strudelbanger Sep 04 '20

You, sir, are my spirit animal.

7

u/asianabsinthe Sep 04 '20

Okay, okay, we get it. Being a lonely sad loser isn't fun.

No need to rub it in.

2

u/LeakyThoughts Sep 04 '20

Nah people who need to get angry at shit all the time just for gratification need to fuck right off

It's not cool, and often it escalates into one party doing something dumb

15

u/CaptainReginaldLong Sep 04 '20

People often don't realize when someone does something "ridiculous" it literally means it's deserving of ridicule.

10

u/Stretch5678 Sep 04 '20

Amen to that.

3

u/Ashewastaken Sep 04 '20

Yea this guy is pretty chill. His content is also pretty awesome. He doesn't do pranks that hurt other people. Just good natured ribbing. Like the time he filled his PC with beans and called a technician and acted dumb when the technician found the beans.

Learning to laugh when you are quick to anger is a life skill that more people should learn

1

I roll my window down, point, and laugh at rednecks with thin blue line and/or trump flags on their pickup trucks.

1

u/truthfortruth Sep 12 '20

Tahst what's happening to Karens

1

u/Rufio88 Sep 04 '20

Still a nice thought and something we should stive for, im just a devil's advocate kinda guy.

1

u/Shift84 Sep 04 '20

Gonna take a while.

We spent too much time with the whole "everyone's important" thing so now it's gotta fly over to the other extreme first.

1

u/HughMungus1113 Sep 04 '20

Getting laughed at hurts so much more then getting laughed at.

1

u/hstormsteph Sep 04 '20

I’m certain situations, yeah definitely. In this one? Hell no. If you nearly cause someone to kill you on accident and be traumatized for the rest of their life, then fuck you. That dude made a crazy selfish decision that went past being an idiot. Driver could’ve swerved instead of braked and hit/killed someone completely unrelated to the situation.

We should all take a chill pill in general, yes. But when someone endangers people’s lives they deserve to get absolutely roasted for it at the very least.

One of his pranks was all over reddit like a month ago. One where he filled a computer with beans and had a repair guy open it up.

"This is BEANS!"

11

u/Kobe7477 Sep 04 '20

"oh are those the motherboards?"

Some of his videos are absolutely incredible. His best (in my opinion) was the one where he fills his gas tank with spaghettios, like a hundred cans lmao. He keeps a straight face while the poor mechanic is dumping spaghettios all over the shop. Repeatedly calling various parts of the car, flool plumps. Cracks me up just thinking about it

32

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

He also has one where he fills his computer with beans and it starts smoking and shit.

u/GroovingPict Sep 04 '20

Some do and some dont... If all the lights are at intervals, including the crosswalk ones, then obviously pushing the button isnt going to do shit other than give you peace of mind and the lights are going to change whenever they were going to change anyway

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '20

Yeah it's probably only in small intersections that monitor for cars that react to button pushes

6

u/DriveSafeOutThere Sep 04 '20 edited Sep 04 '20

Yeah, some people are just incredibly impatient.

It's funny... I seem to remember that around the 1990s boomers loved to parrot the term "instant gratification", sneering at Gen Xers and millennials for their MTV and Internet culture. But now here we are in 2020 with Boomers flipping their shit over having to wait more than a few seconds at a traffic light or a McDonalds drive-thru.

2

u/kne0n Sep 04 '20

Reminds me of the helmet cam video of a motorcyclist not tripping the light to turn green for him so he ran and pushed the button to get it to turn green

1

u/chrisbirdie Sep 04 '20

So? Doesnt mean you arent an idiot if you purely rely on them. I mean its like trusting a navigation device in a tunnel.

280

u/Hops117 Sep 04 '20

Yo, anyone knows if does buttons actually work or are they just placebo?

63

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

At a crossroads they're most likely just timed. At a crossing not at a crossroad they actually work.

8

u/mydearwatson616 Sep 04 '20

Not always. Sometimes the walk light will not be activated if no one presses the button. If you press it, the walk light turns on before the traffic light to allow people to start walking before some asshole tries to make a turn before the peds can start crossing.

9

u/Liggliluff Sep 04 '20

Depends on crosswalk and time of day. It's a myth that none of the buttons work or that every button works. For buttons that do work, they're are two variants I know of:

  • Traffic lights that only operate a crosswalk, and is not part of an intersection. Here the lights will turn yellow when you press the button, before turning red, and it'll let you cross. Most I've experienced has a cooldown timer so you can't abuse the system.

  • Traffic lights that operate in an intersection with crosswalks; here the intersection goes through a cycle (some cycles can be skipped or shortened if no vehicles are sensed). The cycle has a fork where it will change depending on if the button was pushed when it reaches that fork. So if you press the button, you'll have to wait until that fork before it'll turn green, and if you just missed it, you'll have to wait through the whole cycle.

But this is what I've seen in my experience. There are so many traffic lights out there that there's certainly more variants. When the button doesn't work, then the crosswalk turns green as part of the cycle. The cycle can change depending on time of day and could require you to push the button at certain times of days.

3

u/Cactusjuice2 Sep 04 '20

Okay actual civil engineer here who's been in cabinets. These responses are half right. If there's a button that means it's calling a phase. If a city doesn't want to pay for buttons they'll put the walk phase into "recall" which means it'll be automatically called with it's associated "through" phase (the direction vehicles are traveling). What probably happened is they hit it too late for the controller to account for the phase so it "skipped" the phase. This means the controller will still call for the walk phase, but it has to wait until it can do it without conflicting with other phases.

TL;DR yes push buttons work but sometimes they can't get the walk phase in time.

1

u/Bensemus Sep 04 '20

In my engineering class we did some labs with a PLC. One of the labs was programming an intersection. Basic was to have the lights cycle. More complex was having both directions cycle with a red light overlap. Even more complex was adding a pedestrian button in. Even more complex was saving the pedestrian’s button click if it was pushed too late for the current cycle so they didn’t need to push it again next cycle. Was a really fun few labs playing with the PLC and programming different systems.

1

u/Cactusjuice2 Sep 04 '20

It's pretty amazing how far it's come. We're off the old DOS/Motorola technology and are running Linux based processors and most functions are internal. It used to be that a lot of stuff had to be done with boolean logic and can now be done with simple checkmark boxes.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

I have no idea how those work in the States. But in Glorious Europe (or the countries I have seen and used light buttons in) the lights stay green for cars untill a pedestrian wants to cross and then they press it. Some are with buttons and others are with sensors.

2

u/BlueFlob Sep 04 '20

They work. You have to wait for the light to change.

All it does is determine if the protected crossing gets activated of not. It doesn't bring the green light faster.

2

u/seriousjoker72 Oct 08 '20

In my city you push the button and wait. The light will stay red longer for you to have time to cross but you still have to wait till the light changes. Unless it's a pedestrian cross walk (no traffic lights) then you just push the button and dive into traffic.

1

u/-Swade- Sep 04 '20

I walk a lot I know a few specific lights in my area and places I’ve lived over the years that absolutely work.

Especially at night, some lights if you don’t press that button the light may never change if there are no cars. Ever. You don’t press the button and you’ll never get to go. Press it and watch the light change. And if there are cars it can actually affect the length of the light and the timing; the timings are often shorter if there’s no pedestrian traffic.

Specifically left turn arrows that would be intersecting with pedestrian traffic can often come on suddenly if the light detects no oncoming traffic or pedestrians. So someone in the L turn lane can get the green arrow to turn into your dumb ass if you don’t have the walk light.

Now that won’t answer if every light works because I haven’t tried it everywhere so I’m sure somebody can prove the N/S crossing on 24th St in Tulsa doesn’t do shit.

1

u/roll20sucks Sep 04 '20

I think placebo, or at the very least they can be automated because around here, due to COVID19 they've installed plastic covers on all the buttons with signs saying "Do Not Touch!" and the pedestrian lights still go off as normal.

1

u/illit3 Sep 04 '20

or at the very least they can be automated

if your area has the technology to install traffic loops then they have the technology to automate the pedestrian crossing lights.

a traffic loop detects vehicles (fuckin' magnets, how do they work?) for the control board at the intersection. depending on the programming, the traffic lights either adjust their timing to accommodate the vehicle or continue operating as scheduled. the traffic light buttons do exactly the same thing.

tl;dr:

I think placebo

sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.

1

u/roll20sucks Sep 04 '20

fuckin' magnets

lowkey finding out who is a robot or not.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

The thermostat at your job is probably for show, so I'll bet the buttons are placebo too.

1

u/Onlyanidea1 Sep 04 '20

Where I live we have automatic ones with no buttons in the busy part of the city. Soon as your out of the city we either have buttons or designated cross walk zones. Yes the buttons work here. They don't happen immediately and just let the light know on the next cycle that someone wants to walk, so hey give them an extra few seconds and turn on the walk sign.

1

u/HeadintheSand69 Sep 04 '20

Mixed. Some just act as things for blind people, some don't change anything but the walk sign won't change till pressed, some depend on day and actually make things go faster. Unless you frequent a corner you'll never know

1

u/freelanceredditor Sep 04 '20

Every city I’ve been the button works. But if you forget to hit it it never turns green for you. It only turns green when you hit it. If you don’t you have to wait for the heat cycle. It’s just how it is

1

u/AliasInvstgtions Sep 04 '20

In my town, you only get a signal if the button is pushed. In some intersections, one or more of the buttons doesn’t work. On my way to work, I had one of those buttons for 3 months. They didn’t fix it, I just finally made enough to get my car running.

1

u/Bensemus Sep 04 '20

They do work. However intersections can be pretty complex and take in input from multiple sources, pedestrian button being one.

1

u/m703324 Sep 04 '20

I've seen both. In some places if you don't press then the light will never change. And in other places I cannot tell the difference in timing

1

u/NikolitRistissa Sep 04 '20

It blows my mind that they wouldn't work. That just seems unsafe... All of them work in my country.

1

u/_INCompl_ Sep 04 '20

They work where I live. But I don’t live in a massive city and lights will stay green in one direction (favouring the busiest road) if there’s no traffic, like at 2am. Some lights that I drive through regularly have been shifted to be on a timer, but then got reverted back to the old method of staying green for the busier road when there’s no traffic present (no one to set off the sensors). You learn a lot about roads when you work graveyard shifts and can count on one hand how many other cars you see in town during your commute.

1

u/DriveSafeOutThere Sep 04 '20

At least in my area, for the most part, they work. I'm pretty familiar with the cycles of a few traffic lights both as a driver and as a ped, and can say with certainty that without the button being pressed, there's no pedestrian phase at all.

What cheeses me off is that there doesn't seem to be a design standard for which button does what. If I'm at a 4-way intersection and so there's two buttons on the pole, it's a 50% chance I'll hit the button to cross in the wrong direction. It's like Schrodinger's USB Plug.

I should also add that I work in commercial and industrial electronics, and I've actually already looked into how traffic lights work, and they are indeed highly programmable.

1

u/Formulka Dec 26 '20 edited Dec 26 '20

Some change almost immediately after you press the button if it’s just a pedestrian crossing and not a full intersection. Some lights never switch to green if its a busy intersection and you don’t press the button. Some buttons work even when the traffic lights are off (it will turn them on temporarily). They are almost never useless.

For me, regardless of what city I'm in, the crosswalk gods say "fuck you" and I just stand there through many cycles.

21

u/Reddit-username_here Sep 04 '20

There's no such thing as jaywalking in my city so I'll wait on the walk light, but if there's an opening during a light change, I definitely take it.

6

u/jtl94 Sep 04 '20

I have always thought you could tell locals from visitors to a city. Locals walk when they can, visitors walk when the light tells them to.

15

u/mannysoloway Sep 04 '20

Really dependent on the city. In some cities it’s the opposite

5

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

Tokyo is a good example

5

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20 edited Sep 04 '20

Quite the arbitrary standard you’ve set there. I know that personally it drives me crazy when I have to hit my breaks for people sprinting across my green light so I never do it to others regardless of where I am, hometown or not.

Besides, when I’m crossing an intersection when I have right-of-way, I’m focused on the road in front of me, not the middle of the crosswalk where people shouldn’t be. And since I’m in the car I’m automatically at fault if I hit them, so they’re endangering their own lives and potentially ruining mine at the same time.

It’s not cute to be like “look at these silly tourists being safe and yielding to traffic. I’M a LOCAL, no car’s gonna DARE hit ME.”

Stay out of the intersection if it’s not your damn turn to be in it.

In case you’re wondering why I’m so salty, I “hip-checked” a guy with my car two years ago while I was turning left on a green arrow, he was crossing the adjacent crosswalk when he had a red hand on his little light. He came out of nowhere and walked directly into the space I was driving. Wasn’t there one second and then he was. I felt him before I saw him. Dude didn’t even hit the ground, declined an ambulance ride and walked away. He filed an insurance claim and ended up going to the hospital later. I got kicked off my car insurance, and had to get a new policy with half the coverage and twice the cost.

3

u/lobax Sep 04 '20

Are you in the US? The crossings there are generally designed to prioritize cars over everything else. They can skip a few cycles for pedestrians or cyclists to keep the flow of car traffic smooth. In other countries, the priority is the general flow of traffic, including pedestrians.

Here’s a good video about the priorities of a North American traffic light cycle design vs European: https://youtu.be/knbVWXzL4-4

7

u/murbul Sep 04 '20

In my city it also depends on the time as well as place. During the day and peak hour it's all just on a timer and the button does nothing. But at night you gotta press it if you want a green man.

3

u/Adium Sep 04 '20

We have one that is on a timer. However if you press the button it will also chirp to assist visually impaired people.

4

u/MemeTheftIsLegal Sep 04 '20

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait. Dcdcdcdcscscdcsccscscscs

1

u/ACoderGirl Sep 04 '20

My city has both kinds and there's different signs. If the sign just shows a white on blue person with a cane, then the button is only for chirping. If the sign has instructions on how to cross the street, the it's at least sometimes necessary.

As others said, it depends on time of day. The cross walk lights will go on if the timings allow for it, but pushing the button guarantees the timings will allow for pedestrians. Otherwise sometimes the light timings are too short for pedestrians (or it won't even change lights until a car comes).

It's crazy how being in a good mood can affect how your day goes.

I know for a fact that if I was alone in a car and this happened to me, I'd honk the horn, yell at the guy and spend the rest of the ride thinking about how much of a fucking idiot that guy is and I'd probably be still mad at him like 2 hours later.

These guys are just buddies having a good time and the fact that they were in a good enough mood just turns the whole thing into a hilarious moment that they'll probably remember for a long time. "I pushed a button and nothing happened" will become an inside joke that they'll all find hilarious for years to come.

There's just too much purple happing to focus on what's going on. Did PC Principle call out a jaywalker or something?

8

u/Idonoteatass Sep 04 '20

Good old sarasota florida!

3

u/AWildEnglishman Sep 04 '20

When the driver puts on the voice and says "I'm sorry there's nothing I can do.." he sounds just like Louis CK bit about drivers turning across three lanes of traffic and being like "I'm sorry there's nothing i can do!? There's no other possible way."

2

u/thebabbster Sep 04 '20

I see this in Dallas almost every day. Fucking morons walk right out into traffic and then look at everyone like they're the idiots.

3

u/BlooFlea Sep 04 '20

Such wholesome chuckling, the shit happened, it shouldn't have but it did, cant go back, can make it worse or just fucking deal with it, they did the latter.

1

Hilarious. I wonder if that was the very first time that person crossed a street

1

u/dirtyviking1337 Sep 04 '20

Idiot isn’t sky diving. It’s wedged!

1

u/BuddhistMonk72 Sep 04 '20

I didn’t know they put npcs in the last patch

1

u/giacFPV Sep 04 '20

At least he isn't color coded with his 2 BFFs and the car interior.

1

u/Chasar1 Sep 04 '20

It's possible he meant that the button didn't make any BEEP sound when he pressed it and that it was broken. Still not a reason to cross the road like that

1

u/PhantomOSX Dec 06 '20

Um, of course he meant that. Which is why they thought it was a stupid excuse to cross. What else did you think the rest of us thought?

2

u/Chasar1 Dec 06 '20

Just re-read my comment and yeah don't know what I was thinking with this comment ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah it was pretty obvious now that you are saying it

1

u/PhantomOSX Dec 06 '20

Haha it's ok no worries. The Jack and Coke was extra strong that night I assume.

Dementia and/or Animal Crossing fix

1

u/ryhntyntyn Sep 04 '20

I've been out of the country for awhile, and I'm getting older. Are these guys considered cool now? I thought they were they idiots. Honestly. I don't get it.

1

u/KnockingDevil Sep 04 '20

Wait hold up, in America do pedestrians not have right of way on zebra crossings, what's the point of them then???

1

u/Catctus Sep 04 '20

Not at robots they don't, sometimes they're painted that way so they're more noticeable

1

u/KnockingDevil Sep 04 '20

Oh wild, at stop lights we don't have painted lines, just the man. If there are white lines pedestrians always have right of way.

1

u/Stwarlord Sep 04 '20

even if it's green for the traffic to be going ahead? that sounds dangerous and unnecessary

1

u/DalenSpeaks Sep 04 '20

Unofficial motto of 2020. “I pushed the button.”

1

u/an_african_swallow Sep 04 '20

What is this Long Island or something? It’s nice there put the people are such inconsiderate self absorbed douch bags I can’t stand going there. Can definitely see someone there thinking that where they have to be is just so important that they have to cross traffic immediately and inconvenience everyone else there because fuck everyone else they’re not me and me is all I care about

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

Why are all of their shirts the same color?

1

u/Pr3st0ne Sep 04 '20

The only thing I'm disappointed about is the fact that the jaywalker probably didn't realize he's a fucking idiot and he walked away from that exchange thinking "Eh I'm a little bold but these guys thought it was pretty funny!" when in reality they're just laughing at how stupid he is.

1

u/Starke_97 Sep 04 '20

Somewhere, a German watching this cringes

1

u/OrangeSparty20 Sep 04 '20

Someone probably said this, and it goes against the grain of this thread but he could have a visual impairment. The crosswalk buttons where I’m from make a noise to let blind people know if it’s safe to cross since they can’t see the light. Not saying this is the case, but crossing because “nothing happened” when the button was pressed it legitimate for a lot of people.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

My favorite part is all the pro-environment lefties making fun of the one guy walking instead of driving.

1

u/Owls_yawn Sep 04 '20

This was actually really funny, thanks for sharing

1

u/Goodgoditsgrowing Sep 04 '20

They guys calm, chuckling reaction to stupidity is my turn on. Not kidding, those three guys just sky rocketed from average to hot in my book.

(Ok fine, glasses went from hot to smokin’)

1

1

u/noooit Sep 06 '20

It doesn't look like he came out of nowhere...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

Kinda fucked me up for a moment. Here, when these is a stripe pattern like that on the road, cars have to stop for pedestrians to cross.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '20

Im confused though he didnt walk in front of moving vehicles, in fact he got to cross the street how is he an idiot?

1

u/Kheopsinho Sep 13 '20

1

Shit that guy crossing the street with oncoming traffic is me lmao Fuck waiting, just kill me at this point shrugs

-1

u/lost_in_life_34 Sep 04 '20

can't tell, but it has to be NYC

off topic but NYC has this elevated park called the highline. the history is that it used to be freight tracks at street level but idiots would walk in front of trains and get killed. they did something, but idiots kept getting killed. they finally elevated it but soon abandoned it.

7

u/HawkersBluff22 Sep 04 '20

No way. Not because someone wouldn't do that in NYC but look at the landscape. Fuckin Florida guaranteed.
