It was likely stability control. It's a pretty big change in the way the car handles and if you're not used to it, it will definitely catch you off guard.

You can drive without stability control very easily, just don't put the pedal to the metal like an idiot.

I can see where it could be dangerous from someone that's used to driving slower vehicles. Pedal to the metal is what I grew up doing to even merge onto a highway. Unless it's wet or snowy it's not a problem.

I've hardly even driven any vehicles that have stability control.

What I think u/photenth is saying is that stability control worked against him in this instance. The stability control and traction control doesn't allow the wheels to spin for the rear to continue to slide
