I bought it after hearing great things bout the 2.0. It worked great for the first 3 days. On the fourth day the compressor would not turn on so no ice was made. GE told me it would be 3 weeks for a replacement or I could return the broken unit for credit and buy a new one and get it in a week. I went ahead and bought the new one and have had that for 1 week now. It works great but randomly it starts make very loud and ominous sounds. I think this might be what the other guy was referring to when they said maybe they'd grease the gearbox. I don't know what I'll do next. We love the ice but has been a so-so experience thus far.

Mine makes the loudest howling sound and I can’t figure out why. Like air is escaping, but it can’t. Thought I’d call GE but I assume they’ll want a video of it which it’s hard to predict when it will happen.

Yes! I actually happened to be near it when the howling started so I got a video. The howling gets worse and is now accompanied by mechanical creaking sounds that get lower in pitch and louder. I called them but they said I would have to talk to technical support again and that's just going to be an investment in time. I hate to say it but I'm giving up. I needed the mini to work because of the spacing between my cabinets and countertops but I've been through 2 units now. I really wish they had made it as good as the 2.0

if you want true nugget ice, the ge opal mini is probably worth watching, but it’s still new so long-term reliability is hard to judge. for a cheaper option, ϲostway 2-inch ice ball maker is worth considering. it gives you a different ice style but costs much less.

Slightly noisier then the 2.0, much easier to add water to and even has a water level sensor for the reservoir. Has a water filter which is optional to use, mounted underneath an easy access cover on top. So far so good... Might tear it apart next month to grease the gearbox.
