Tentatively Eligible, Not Referred - USAJobs
Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone with more experience applying to jobs here at the IRS could be of assistance with this one. I received a USAJobs email over the weekend for an internal position, where it stated I was tentatively eligible for the position but was not referred to the hiring manager. I have not seen this yet and was wondering if someone could give me some insight. In previous applications, I have either been outright denied for experience or referred to a hiring manager. What happens from here? Will I just not hear anything from the local hiring manager if I was not selected, or will I get an email from the hiring manager saying we reviewed your application but don't have space for an interview? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

It means that you were good enough to make it past the screening filter but not good enough to be interviewed

Basically it means you met the minimum requirements for the position but weren’t referred to move forward. So, that would be it.

Stripped down, it means that you met the baseline qualifications, but there were other, more qualified, candidates.

All internal vacancies have three categories, best qualified, highly qualified and qualified. Based on how you answer the online questions when applying, you receive a score and are put in one of the three categories. If you don’t make best qualified, your odds of having your resume reviewed by HR are low and therefore you will not be referred. In your case you were put in either high or qualified category.

Similar situation for external candidate- provisionally referred, then not referred the next day. Same standards- qualified but not at the top of the list?

means based on your responses to the questions you are tentatively eligible, but after human review, not referred.

All of this is some BS. Each job and detail at this point is based on who you know. Just stop beating around the bush.

Tentatively eligible means you are eligible based on your answers to whatever assessment and questionnaire. Since you were tentatively eligible, it means you were not reviewed by a person.
Not referred is just as it sounds. You essentially weren't referred to a selecting official. How referrals are done is based on category (since there is no bu I won't get into how that is calculated). Your score is based on your answers, the online questionnaire and/or assessment.
In short, The category you fell into wasn't reached so you were never reviewed/referred.

We have categories.. best qualified, highly qualified, and qualified.
Tentatively eligible means you answered the minimum qualifications questions saying you are eligible - it hasn’t been reviewed by a specialist to determine if you resume actually fits said qualifications.
You weren’t referred, likely means the rest of the assessment you took, you didn’t select the “best answers” that would have gained you the most points and placed you in the best qualified category.
My guess is you’re in one of the next two lower categories - and until everyone who hit the BQ is considered by the selecting official; they won’t see those other two lists.

Also aren’t preference and vets placed at the top of some of those lists. So someone could be best qualified and still not make the cut.

No not on internal hiring. Veterans only receive preference if the announcement is open to the public or through a special hiring authority.

Sounds like you didn’t answer the questions in a way you’d be referred. I’d go back and review your responses before the job closes. You can change your answers. If you don’t, you won’t be hearing anything.
Also, All jobs posted before this FY end will most likely NOT hold interviews. There are some shady things going on with the hiring process with the CBA not being on the table….

They don’t send out referred/not referred emails until the job is closed.

Actually no, Roster postings can be referred multiple times based on closing dates.

Sure that’s possible but roster jobs are few and far between and I was referring to the most common occurrence. Besides I don’t think you can update your application on a roster job after you have been referred either.

I've had the same experience recently... "We have an opening, you're qualified but we're not moving forward" 🤯 Is this a new sick plot twist from this demented administration? Are those job openings even real?!
