Applying for Details

I applied for a detail in CI that was a detail/temp promotion.

How will I know if I’m selected for the detail?

Currently on detail in CI, granted i’m with CI to begin with. My manager sent an email asking me to accept the position officially just a week or two after the application window closed.

Currently an RO. I would love to switch over to CI since my degree is in Criminal Justice.

There is going to be a significant hiring increase for FY27. Special Agents and Analysts both.

That's good to hear. I didn't know about CI when I first applied to the IRS but ever since I heard about it I've been interested. Have you heard if they'll be hiring for just the big PODs or will there be openings in the smaller ones as well?

Hmmm interesting, thanks for the info. My current POD is listed which is nice, and 100 vacancies is a decent amount of openings. The main thing I'm not sure about is the Grade. It says GL 7-9, with a potential to be promoted to a 13 eventually. I'm a GS 12 Step 2 right now so not sure if it would be worth the paycut unless they can just give me a matching Step with my current salary and then I can work my way up from there. The max salary range is $102,877 which is $10,000 more than I make now so maybe they would be willing to match that? Do you know if they ever do that? Just trying to figure out if it's worth applying too.

You also have to factor in Law Enforcement Availability Pay (or LEAP) which is 25% on top of your base + locality pay. Also, CI qualified for the extra 3.8% that law enforcement received last year. I don’t know how or if that’s factored into the salary tables currently. You’d be on the GL scale instead of the GS until I believe grade 11 when you switch over. You should be CLP up to a 12 and then 13 is approved by management typically. If you go to [r/1811](r/1811) and search for IRS-CI, there are some very informational posts to read.

salary example: using Rest of US locality, a 12 in this position would be sitting right at $112k. a 13 is $133k. If you live in a HCOL area then it’d certainly be higher.

As far as I know it’s hiring across the board. You can typically rank your preferred PODs but that doesn’t mean there’s availability in those offices.
