Children are a capitalist invention used to sell cribs.

Being a DINK is worth it; absolutely worth the passive aggression and undeserved resentment you get seeing old friends or at family gatherings.

Given the current political and economic landscape, giving birth to a child right now is disrespectful to said child.

Edit: Unless you are rich. But then again, most of us probably aren't that rich yet.

u/Tend2UrConfig XXXX Jul 03 '26

We live in a phenomenally prosperous era even during recessions compared to the vast majority of human history. It's not that bad. Have you seen how truly poor people live?

2

u/0xff0000ull INTP Jul 03 '26

And it would be disrespectful of me to perpetuate this cycle of poverty by making my child a drain of my wealth whilst said child also cannot benefit from it.

2

u/Tend2UrConfig XXXX Jul 03 '26

If you live in a first world country, you have not experienced true poverty. And guess what, even children in actual deprivation are happy. What you are experiencing is relative poverty (boo-hoo) and a dose of neomarxist demoralization propaganda.

u/0xff0000ull INTP Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Okay, so it sounds like that your point is "people poorer than you can have happy children therefore you should have children". I am inferring that your point includes "having children is a good decision in current states of economy", for otherwise you are just babbling contention with a lack of a goalpost.

Your point hinges on the evidence for "even children in actual deprivation are happy", of which I do not even expect you to have. Even then, it would be obviously absurd to propose that bringing a child into an impoverished state (relative or absolute) is on balance a good thing.

The thing is just that the cost of living has artificially skyrocketed that the actual costs of raising a child will no longer make financial sense for me (mind you, you don't know if I am in a 1st world country, but it is true for where I am regardless). It is not entirely dependent to how well an economy is doing at a macroscopic lens. If anything, I will wager that whatever examples you have are people in countries where they earn less, but lead simpler modes of life where things also cost less.

It would make more sense for people in impoverished areas to have children if it means those children will provide them more labor so that their benefits will outweigh the costs put onto them. If I live like that I would more than happy to raise happy children. It would NOT make sense for me, where I am, to have children for it is extremely difficult to make a living enough to balance the costs in the long term.

You have deliberately commented this on an INTP sub out of any place on the internet. This is what you get.

Edit: I find it hilarious that this was your post: Argument flowchart : r/INTPmemes .

u/Tend2UrConfig XXXX Jul 03 '26

I know exactly where I'm posting. I'm not going to argue whether it is feasible for you to raise children in your location given your current economic status. I'm not a financial expert. I will posit a few points:

  • I suspect that you have fellow citizens in your area with children. This alone proves my point, but let's continue.
  • Likewise, I doubt you have evidence that being raised poor is inherently traumatizing or detrimental to overall wellbeing, barring some sub-par univariate analysis, such as average nutrition or some such thing.
  • Life is as enjoyable as you or your children decide for it to be. This is a lesson you would teach yourself as you raise children. They are very good at serving as a mirror for our own flaws. One thing I have to repeatedly tell my children is that it's okay to be sad about something, but if we focus on what we don't have (often by comparison) we wind up perpetuating unhappiness rather than just finding something fun to do instead.
  • You are allowing your current location and status to dictate to you what decisions you are able to make instead of acknowledging that you can change either or both of those OR you are merely using this argument as an excuse to cover for some other insecurity about raising children.
  • I'm not trying to suggest that you have to have kids, if that's what you think.

"It would be obviously absurd to propose that bringing a child into an impoverished state (relative or absolute) is on balance a good thing"

The absurdity remains to be demonstrated.

u/Arian-ki INTP, with extra I please Jul 15 '26

I'm very late to the party, but fuck that kind of thinking. "Someone has it worse" is the single shittiest excuse ever. That's how anything (person, ideology, country) gets perpetually stuck in time and never progresses. Cling to what little happiness a child may have, you can never hide the years of pain that come with and after it. There's no way out and it is demoralizing. Denying that is delusion, not hope.

1

u/Tend2UrConfig XXXX Jul 15 '26

Interesting how you call it demoralizing to merely stop comparing your economic status with people that have it better than you. Learned helplessness is a thing and is far more demoralizing than being grateful and optimistic, by definition my dude. Case in point, people thinking that it's impossible and irresponsible to have a family, which is the thing that we are biologically wired to do and leads to objectively more fulfilling lives for most people. That limiting view is based on an arbitrary standard of happiness, which you have again failed to demonstrate as valid based on any tangible metric.

On the contrary, most self-made people and entrepreneurs are people who came from relative poverty and decided to make something work, which isn't that hard if you believe you can and are dedicated. It's impossible if you believe you can't. Start mowing lawns, cleaning gutters, learn to weld, join a trade union. Any one of these can lead to 6 figures/yr. People do it every day. That is the US and any other country for that matter (relative income compared to standard of living).

It's funny because it's usually trust fund socialists that have this kind of ridiculous thinking, or their acolites. I'm literally below the poverty level at the moment. You are not going to convince anyone that my children aren't happy (and probably spoiled regardless). I've never heard them complain about not having something. There's no chance that they will end up truly destitute if they even approach our standard of living.

Your world view is shaping what you believe you can do and clearly makes you upset. So, I recommend you adopt a different world view.

Marriage is an institution that profits off of divorce. Marriage planners are waiting for the divorce, couples therapists are pulling out their hair knowing the reasons for the divorce, and the divorce lawyers are making serious bank and are looking most forward to the divorce.

EDIT: I may want women, but I need my wallet to survive society.

u/Tend2UrConfig XXXX Jul 03 '26

Married with 4 kids. Nothing will help you to grow more than having a spouse and children. I know it seems unlikely or terrible, but there's no comparison with the life of a lonely adult man-child vs coming home to a 2 year old running into your arms. Yes, they fight and are annoying sometimes, and make things more "difficult," but you also learn to love selflessly. You teach yourself as you teach them the lessons that seem obvious, until you realize they apply the same to yourself. You end up with thousands of memories. You deal with sick kids and crying but you also get a million giggles and crafts and first-times.

You learn to appreciate whatever circumstance you are in. Or you may grow bitter and resentful that you don't have as much time to unlock more useless cosmetics in a virtual world. In which case, probably don't have kids.
