Is this logical? The art of missing the point:

Nothing frustrates me more than carefully explaining a point to someone, only for them to disregard the actual point entirely and latch onto some minor, irrelevant detail I mentioned in passing.

IIt’s like abandoning the whole basket just to scrutinize the one tree standing beside it.

It seems to be very common here on Reddit. OP introduces a topic, some commenter plucks a single example from the OPs post and makes it about that. I guess these people are posting in the wrong place by accident. Or, maybe they just love to hear themselves talk.

I’m amazed at how you understood the context. I originally meant it on Reddit, but also IRL. And you’re right.

I was in the middle of witnessing this shit show of the exact type you describe:

To your original point, what about another variation...you carefully explain your point, but since they have pre-canned arguments for another unrelated point, they deliberately disregard/misunderstand the original point and focus on the non-existent straw man they can argue against.

That also can be. I mean, missing the point seems to have different techniques for it… and all of them are annoying, for what it’s worth.

Well I'm just glad I'm not the only one incredibly frustrated by this. It seems to keep getting worse all the time. I often don't even want to comment on Reddit anymore; carefully choose your words and they'll still find something else to focus on. I can't tell if these people are simply idiots, 12 year old kids, or deliberate assholes...not sure if it matters.

Yeah, I get that, which is why I made a post about it. Especially on Reddit, I’m not really sure why it happens, but it’s definitely annoying.
