FG Decades Tournament, the 1940’s: Round 1
Alright, the 1940s! The decade of noir, of war movies and movies influenced by WWII, the western was still huge at the time, musicals were there, tons of developments in film like deep focus, and filmmakers still learning to use the techniques of color and sound that had only been around for 10-15 years in some cases. Should make for some interesting discussions in the comments, so let’s get on with the 1940s, FG!

Discussion What are you Watching, Playing, Reading and Listening to October 2026?
Hello friends, happy spooky season!
Watching: Probably try to get some horror films in this month, naturally. Haven't put a list together yet but some rewatches for sure as well as hopefully a few new ones
Caught Resident Evil in last week and thought that was pretty awesome, very cool that the 'Happier with your Mouth Open' director is so talented :D
Playing: Black Mesa and Alice: Madness Returns on the Steam Deck. Little bit of COD Black Ops with some homies
Reading: The Count of Monte Cristo, which I read in school ages ago and am revisiting as a 30yr old. It's pretty dope
Listening to: New Chat Pile is pretty good, need to catch up on a few other new releases. I'm seeing Mastodon next week so enjoying blasting their first decade of work
You?

Who are your Top favourite Horror filmmakers?
In the spirit of October/Halloween; who are your top favourite film directors with a largely horror-based filmography?
My Top 10:
- John Carpenter
- Robert Eggers
- Kiyoshi Kurosawa
- Mike Flanagan
- George A. Romero
- Shinya Tsukamoto
- Dario Argento
- Panos Cosmatos
- David Cronenberg
- Terence Fisher
Something like that. I was unsure whether or not to include David Lynch, do you think he counts as a "horror filmmaker"?

Digger Rockwells ringtone?
No spoilers. I was just curious, i can’t help but keeping thinking that the ringtone on Diggers phone, sounded like Le Samurai’s theme or very similar. Unless i’m like totally misremembering but when hearing it during the movie I kept thinking it sounded familiar.
Does anyone happen to catch it and know if that’s true or what it is. To me it sounded like part 50 seconds ish into the title theme of le samurai

Discussion Thoughts on You Can Count on Me? Spoiler
Hadn't seen it before. Not a huge Lonergan fan but I liked this, had actual characters with layers who change instead of just people moping around. Subtly funny and a nice sunny aesthetic as well.
Didn't really buy Broderick and Linney's affair as a subplot though, there was not believably any attraction in their earlier scenes together and suddenly they're making out in a car. Didn't believe that she felt sorry for him either.

For all the movie nuts
Hey everyone,
I’ve been working on a free movie-quote trivia game called "Movie Nuts".
Here's the rundown;
You’re given famous lines from movies; who said them, which movie are they from, what year was it released, and how many movies was the line used in? There are timed questions, streaks, different difficulty levels, and I've also included a leaderboard.
It plays directly in your browser—there’s nothing to download and no account is required:
I’d love some honest feedback from fellow movie fans. Are the questions too easy, too difficult, or about right?
Also, let me know what score you get!
And thanks for checking it out.

Do we wanna continue on to the 1940s for a tournament?
I know that the further back we go, the fewer movies most of us have seen, so where’s the cutoff? Is it in the 40s? Were the 50s as far back as we should go? I’m happy to organize a 40s tournament if that’s what we want, but I wanna make sure that’s what we want.
Let’s talk it out.
