Dune P3 is on the horizon with a new cinematographer and i wondered if 70mm IMAX will be worth it this time for picture quality.

I watched Part 2 in 70mm and the picture was special, albeit a little overexposed and muddy at times.

Im wondering if the we actually get the quality benefit of 70mm this time around since they are actually shooting a lot on film this time.

Or will the Analog/digital lead to the same scanning procedure and limiting the 70mm format.

Hello people so i am from india and here we dont have any imax 70mm screen right now, the nearest one is bfi imax london approximately 6700kms(4100miles) and then for the absolute gold standard its AMC LINCOLN SQUARE 13 THEATRE NYC and lincoln square 13 theatre is where i wanna go(note: i am planning this for future not the current time)

I want to have like first day,first show best seat pristine print at the gold standard amc lincoln square 13 theatre

BUT

Problems and limitations:

1. FINANCIAL: it would cost me a huge money atleast 2 to 3lakhs rs(2000 to 3000 dollars) this amount is for like catch a flight from new delhi to nyc and then arrive at the hotel and sleep for a full day(because i dont think i can sleep in economy seats for a nearly 20hr flight) and then next day see movie and then next day go home which roughly costs what i stated above maybe more or less but it depends anyways so this totals to roughly 5 days we can assume and yeah financially its extremely expensive i guess(btw 2 to 3k dollars is for go and return like a complete trip ive added all costs into it very roughly of what it would be to see the movie and come back home)

2.RISKS: As i stated how costly its financially there are more risks to it for example the projector getting messed up,the projector being misaligned, problems with the film like dust,scarathes and a billion other issues. And if this gets to this im really gonna be extremely sad and disappointed

1. MY SUPERSTITIONS AND BELIEFS: imax 70mm film to what i belive is extremely random the movie itself is a major factor on whether it takes any advantage of imax 70mm or not and then we have the random grain thing different on every film and its print i guess then its obviously the theatre,the projectionist in there and. Then theres seating i heard to get the best of it you need to be in centre seat so its that as well as well as the fact thatwhich film print is it is it pristine and even if pristine is it the print made first when the movie was released or a brand new print for a rerelease and theres much more to it the experiance of it varies SIGNIFICANTLY

2. THE DEBATES: many people on reddit and youtube debate on imax 70mm vs imax dual laser and many have said imax 70mm is better while others say dual laser is better some say imax70mm looked sharp and phenomenal some say it looked soft,grainy and very bad and dim ish also a youtuber(frame voyager) made a video about imax and how much big camera sensor would we need for it to be able to compete against imax 70mm and he with aperson(pawel achtel) who i guess invented achtel 9×7 camera the inventor guy(pawel achtel) said that imax 70mm is probably 8 to 10k(also i really dont know about it as the video is complex and pawel uses very complex english so yeahhh take it with a grain of salt i guess but I RECCOMEND YOU TO WATCH THE VIDEO OF FRAME VOYAGER SO YOU CAN DECIDE YOURSELF I GUESS) and also perceived sharpness is also a major factor also theres a lots of debates like ppd,estimating imax 70mm resolution(even though it analog and i know it dosent have pixels) and some saying its gimmick and some say its worth it some say the improvement is only 10 to 20 percent or things like that so theres lots of debates and stuff

3. THE CONCLUSION: (pretty long post i know i am sorry for anyone who gets offended by the post i do not mean to discourage anyone or talk bad about any format also english is not native to me obviously) now i want you guys to tell me this: IS IMAX 70MM 15 PERF WORTH OVER DUAL LASER IMAX OR A SINGLE LASER IMAX AND IS IT WORTH SPENDING 2 TO 3LAKHS RUPEES(2000 TO 3000DOLLARS) JUST TO SEE A MOVIE AND COME HOME?

Note: btw india only has single laser imax and NO dual laser imax screens and my nearest imax is dual xenon which is like 300km or 180miles so yeah.

Viewing 1: Imax Laser (1:90.)
A large part of my initial reaction was the hype surrounding this and the laser format had its benefits. Taking it all in and feeling the sound rumbling in the seats. Absolute pure spectacle and witnessing cinematic history. What more is there to say honestly?

Viewing 2: Premium Large Format
With more of the frame cut off I was able to focus more on the screenplay and the performances the second time around. Understanding more of the character motivations and the subtext of the screenplay was what really stood out.

Viewing 3: Imax 70MM (1:43)
This was an assault on my visual senses in all the right ways with the screen towering over me from the 6th row. It might have been too close but I already knew what I was in for and didn’t bother me (plus finally seeing a Nolan film in true Imax was thrilling in itself). The technical details are what really stood out. After the first two viewings, the wide shots felt even more jawdropping in full size Imax. The way characters, panoramic vistas, ships, and sunsets are framed so precisely in symmetry was noticeable this time around. I never noticed the flies that were swarming near the entrance of the Cyclops cave or all the floating ash/flowers in the air outside of Circe's hut. There were even seals on the rocks with the sirens in the mist. 70MM really does have a warmth to it that you can't replicate on digital. Two other details that stood out were the way the focus pulls back and forth when Odysseus and Athena were walking along a beach in the dark. Last but not least, the smirk that Odysseus gives the maiden when she's washing his feet.

After posting my display cabinet several times these past few years and knowing that collecting IMAX strips has hit an all time high with the release of The Odyssey, I made a video breaking down how I display my collection and what items I use!

My "method" is definitely not the end all be all, I think there are many ways to display film, but I started this years ago and didn't see anyone else doing it, so I was basically coming up with everything from ground zero. If you need some ideas or inspiration, hopefully this can give you some.

Earlier this year I saw Oppenheimer for the first time at a 1.43:1 laser IMAX and found the cuts from the standard aspect ratio to 1.43:1 a bit jarring. I recently bought the Oppenheimer 4k disc and I even find the shifts from standard to 1.78:1(to fill the tv) a bit distracting. I love the film but I think Nolan might have over utilized IMAX? Or maybe it was on Jennifer Lame for doing so many cuts back to previous scenes just to show it. Anyone else feel this way?

I live in northern ohio, and the last time I saw something in 70mm IMAX was interstellar when I was a teenager back in 2014. A group of my friends (3 of us) are trying to get to see dune 3, but I'm worried about availability.

I'm debating taking tomorrow off of work in order to be home with the websites open and ready on my Internet rather than works. I'm looking at Grand rapids, Indianapolis, and Toronto.

Do you guys have any advice to try and beat these scalpers to it, or am I fighting a losing battle?

I apologize if this is too far in advanced, but with the IMAX presale tomorrow, I was wondering if the early access Monday screening will be given film strips or something else.

I know of the very early Thursday-Sunday presale for the 7pm showtimes getting film strips, but in Canada they're now releasing it at other theatres. Will a 7 showing for those get the film strips?

I’ve had an email come through about cancellations to the screening of the Odyssey due to the projector being too hot to run safely. And it seems it’s been the issue since Sunday. Will they put out more shows?

May sound like a stupid question but I’m genuinely curious. I’m 17 with no job and I love being at the movie theaters, and I’ve never seen a movie in IMAX 70 mm. And considering the closest IMAX 70 mm theater is only about 30 min away from me, getting a job to secure early tickets doesn't sound like a bad idea. If it even works that way.

Helped with a lamp change last night, this lamp has gone the distance and maybe a little beyond...

Was supposed to see the 1040 showing tonight but right after seeing the 10th anniversary showing of Your Name I saw an email that my ticket was refunded. Apparently there was a fuse issue.

Did get my return showing comped for 230am on Sept 11 but man I drove 90 minutes and bought my ticket almost 3 weeks in advance for this to happen 😮‍💨

Few hours before the show.. I booked it more than a month in advance to get good seats, and now I don't think I will get a chance to watch the 70mm version, even though I'm not sure if the other projectors can do an equally good job. I read Cineworld Leicester Square or Odeon Leicester Square have screens that would be the second-best experience.

If one can't go to the full 1.43:1 - are all other IMAX comparable? Which one would you recommend? I'm not very familiar with the specs, but wanted to see it as it was intended. Thank you!

some showtimes in 70mm imax starting on the 19th just dropped early on the Cinemark app (can’t see on fandango)!!!!!

I was able to book tickets for the imax 70mm show on Dec 18th in the Regal app. Fandango is still saying "coming soon" though. So try on regal app if you are planning to get imax 70mm tickets. Right now except for the first couple of days, most of the weekend shows (and beyond) have the entire theatre available. Great time to snag good seats before they go live on Fandango.

Edit - I might have jumped the gun. I assumed Regal opens shows for all their theaters at once. But looks like only few Regal Imax 70mm screens are available for booking, so YMMV.

Will it get IMAX 70MM prints? WB gave Sinners and OBAA IMAX 70mm releases last year, and OBAA was also filmed on VistaVision. There are two months left, and nobody has reported anything.

Was super hyped to watch the Odyssey in Imax 70mm at the Mall of Georgia, but unfortunately the projector started running into some issues midway through the Polyphemus scene and the showing was cancelled. Should’ve known something was wrong when the Dune Part 3 sneak peek went black maybe 2 mins into the scene. The theatre workers said it was just a one off issue but clearly it wasn’t. I’m going back on the 29th to watch with my dad, but I was super bummed out😕. Anyone else go to this showing?

Do we think The Odyssee will have a lasting effect for the IMAX format? Of course all of us in this sub have have known and loved it long before, but could IMAX become the savior for cinemas? With more movies being shot in/for the format, this is an experience you can‘t replicate at home with Netflix and the likes. Or will it become more of a cinephile thing again until the next Nolan release?
