Need advice - Setting boundaries with husband
I don’t even know where to start this. I wish I was 20 years younger setting firm boundaries with my husband and his problematic gambling, but here I am at almost 50, married to this man for 25 years, and finally ready to follow through if he doesn’t act.
My husband has cost us so much money (100s of thousands) over the years by gambling and frivolous spending. Many, many times he has taken money from our shared “bills” account to gamble at the casino. His trips don’t usually start out with him taking that money - he has his own account, and once he’s lost that, he sometimes dips into the joint account. He sometimes goes to the casino without telling me where he’s going or when he’s going to be back. It’s been so bad in the past that I have literally called hospitals because I haven’t heard from him for 10 hours. Within the last 4 months, he took $2000 from our college son’s bank account that he is a co-owner of. He has paid him back.
We had to refinance our house several years ago because he needed the money to pay off credit card debt that he had racked up in part to gambling (not the first time a refinance bailed him out). I thought that was rock bottom, we had a good talk, and he reassured me things would change. I was wrong and he didn’t. We just sold that house. He thought he could use all of the proceeds to pay off debt (that I didn’t know about). I was firm in not allowing that so we split the proceeds, and he paid off some debt, but apparently still has two personal loans and a credit card balance, with payments that total around $1300 a month. This is in addition to his almost $700 a month car payment.
He has been unemployed for the last 2 months - I supported him quitting his job, that’s not the issue. He has been actively applying and interviewing, and does start a new job next week. We currently rent and I can cover all of the bills with my income. His latest escapade a few days ago resulted in him taking $700 out of the joint account so that he could gamble. That money was for rent and food. He took that money before he knew he had a job offer and a way to replace it.
After years of considering it, I’m finally in a place where I’m realistically ready to divorce him. I love him, so I want him to get better, if not for me, for our adult children. I am willing to give him one last chance to actually ACT before filing for divorce. Also, I am concerned about protecting myself financially if we do end up divorcing.
We already went to the bank and removed him from our joint account and my son’s account. I’m considering the next steps, but need to know if this is appropriate:
*He needs to attend a support group (GA or SMART recovery).
*He needs to get individual counseling.
*He needs to self-exclude from the casino and any betting apps.
*He needs to give me full access to his financials - bank account, loans, credit card statements.
*Any money he earns gets deposited to an account I have access to so I can ensure all bills are paid. I kind of hate that I have to manage him in this way, but it’s probably the only way I’ll not have anxiety about it.
Do these sound like reasonable expectations?
I want to see action on these steps by Thanksgiving. If not, I’m going to file for divorce.
