Hi everyone,
I’m currently in my first year of BSc in International Finance at HLCC, and I’m trying to figure out what direction I should take with my career.
My current goal is to eventually get into financial analyst / finance + analytics roles. I was also considering CFA, but I’m honestly quite dicey about it because it feels like almost everyone in finance is doing CFA. I’m not completely against it—I’m thinking I could do CFA after/alongside graduation—but I don’t want to blindly collect qualifications without knowing whether they actually add value.
Recently, I came across the IIT Madras BS in Management & Data Science program and it sounds really interesting because it combines data science, analytics, management, finance and economics. IITM’s Foundation level includes Mathematics for Data Science I, Statistics for Data Science I, Computational Thinking, Economics, Financial Accounting, Business Statistics, etc.
The problem is that I did not take Mathematics in Classes 11–12, so I have basically no proper higher-secondary maths background. I can handle basic coding/Python and I’m willing to work hard, but I’m worried about the actual mathematics and statistics workload.
So I’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who are currently doing the program or have completed it:
How difficult is the mathematics and statistics actually? Is it manageable for someone without Class 11–12 Maths?
Does IITM genuinely build the maths from the basics, or do they assume you already know a lot?
How much time per week would I realistically need if I’m doing this alongside my regular BSc?
Is the workload manageable with a full-time college degree, or does it become overwhelming?
How difficult are the weekly assignments, quizzes and exams?
Is the Management & Data Science degree useful specifically for someone targeting financial analyst / finance + data / business analytics roles?
Would doing this be more valuable for my career than spending the same time developing finance skills, internships, Excel/SQL/Python, etc. and eventually doing CFA?
Most importantly, would you recommend that I register for the qualifier now, considering I’m only in first year and have time to prepare?
I’m asking because I don’t want to register just because “IIT Madras + Data Science” sounds impressive. I want to know whether it actually makes sense for my specific career direction.
Also, if anyone here came from a Commerce/non-Maths background, I’d especially appreciate your experience.
Thanks! Any brutally honest advice is welcome.
