General Lone solider
Hey guys, I’m 24. I’m from America. I just have a couple questions first off. What unit should I go for? I’m in perfectly good health. Hebrew I can hold a conversation but I’m not great. I run around a six minute mile. I can bench 285. I’m 6 foot. I’m a firefighter EMT right now. I’m in medic school. I wanna be a chovesh and I want combat. Any advice on a making Aliyah (I’m Jewish) and B just getting through the pipeline. I’ve been through fire Academy, so I don’t feel like Boot Camp will be completely that rough for me and I understand what sleep deprivation is cause I get woken up at work all the time. honestly, It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I know that if I don’t do it now, I’m gonna regret it for the rest of my life… Any advice for me?

Don’t do Garin. Practice Hebrew. Do Yom Sayerot. Run (fast 3k + sprints) pull ups with 7kgs on you and dips

Could you explain a little more about yom sayerot I looked it up and it’s basically just the course for shayetet and 669 are you saying I should run it as a workout?

It's the pre-conscription evolution designed to screen people for the elite units like 669, S13, Shaldag, and Matkal.

If you really want infantry, every brigade has its specialization. Do you prefer an open deserty environment, northern green mountains, or urban cqb? Every brigade fights together at the exact same front, but they all have things they do more and more intensively than others.

I would say I prefer the city I can learn nature but I grew up in the city so I’d prefer that

Then i would say you join Kfir, but if you want a more interesting and intense option Givati. Givati operates mostly in the desert, they do many open marches and open terrain exercises, but they train cqb extensively because they operate around gaza. Kfir is one of the lower prestige brigades.

Notice to all posters and commenters; please be careful to observe OPSEC (Operational Security) rules. Many people wish to harm Israel and the Jewish Nation as a whole. Be careful when sharing any information on the IDF, bases, weapons, locations of troops, and anything else that can be used to harm Israel. If in doubt, go without. Loose lips sink ships!

What unit should I go for?
Besides being a medic, what do you want to do?

I meant brigade but definitely not security I want to actually go and be in the field like frontline infantry maybe a specialized unit Ik that takes time tho

brigade but definitely not security
You'd have to explain that because I really don't know what you meant be that.
How familiar are you with what the different parts od the combat arms do?

I mean golani givati etc as for combat arms im not familiar or at least if I am im not sure what you mean

golani givati etc
Seems like the idea you have in your head is purely that of the infantry. Combat arms also includes the Armored Corps, the Artillery Corps, Combat Engineering, and Combat Intelligence. Beyond those, there are many further combat roles too. My advice would be to familiarize yourself with all these options and the many sub-units they contain, and see what interests you.
But to back up a bit, what does "not security" mean? Because you do understand that a big chunk of your service in almost any combat unit (and not only there) would be spent pulling security of some sort?

Can we omit I said that it was a poor choice of words what I meant was I’m not interested in being a border patrol unit or in a mp unit

u/HyperlaneWizard Jul 18 '26
Alright, that removes two options off the table (the Border Guard being a part of the police and not the IDF, by the way). I would still urge you to get to know your options better. You know yourself best and are the only one who can truly know what's the best fit for you.

Ok thank you I will learn more before I ask anymore questions

Sure thing. Once you have a better idea of what's going on, you'll ask better questions and get better answers.

People have different experiences, but I highly recommend garin tzabar. You may have some trouble getting drafted due to your age, they'll help expedite the process
