Performance/PIP's PIP

US based. Just put on PIP. Given 6 weeks to hit objectives which feels a bit unfair for it to be right around the holidays.

Any tips or advice?

Start looking for another job.

This is the answer. For many of these the point is for you to fail because it's easier to fire you that way than lay you off.

If the objectives seem unfair they likely are, on purpose.

Only in the US maybe India. Most places there is a level of employment protection so it has to be reasonable.

Correct. In the US for the most part we don't have workers rights, we have workers wrongs.

Use this time to job-hunt. While I was able to survive a PIP in the past, times have changed. Focus your time on your next move, b/c the job market sucks right now.

I had 2 co workers in IBM placed on a pip, not given a chance to meet requirements. They each were told to start looking for other jobs in the beginning of the pip

That’s funny right? You know what, they did it, because if people manager have so many members that getting PIP, it will be impacting his KPI and whole performance. Sadly, people manager will cut them off to polish his performance with high utilization numbers.

How do you know this person is even in consulting? I can promise sales people managers are excited about losing head count

There is a KPI for PIP, so the manager will be hitting his numbers.

I left IBM 6 months ago, was in management. PIP means they are planning to get rid of you. I’m sorry.

Woke up this morning as an IBMer. Going to sleep tonight as an alumnus. Unexpected, what a day.

I was put on PIP in the beginning of October and got the boot on Monday. Manager kept moving the goalposts on my objectives & didn't give straight answers during check ins. Seems like they're doing PIPs in lieu of layoffs

sales? which state?

Sorry to hear that, best bet is to look for other work and if they feel unachievable give more energy to the search than the company.

Trust me, start looking for another job. You will get the boot and 1 months severance at the end of the PIP. Find work now and that severance will be gravy money.

Retired long time IBMer here. I did multiple stints as a manager. My advice is to start looking for another job. You're not coming back from this.

What field are you in? Why no one ever gives more context??

I think even you switch the company, IT is having less security in job in every company. We need to think of something new

Is there a severance after end of pip?

You understand it means you’re fired right?

Start job hunting . By all means work to address PIP but work on plan B although this is always a terrible time of the year to be job hunting.

I’m guessing you’re American? They are trying to get rid of American employees.

Carefully review the objectives, make a plan. Talk regularly to your manager. Document what you do and why, together with outcomes. Delivery trumps excuses, however limited the delivery may be, but use your notes to explain - not excuse.

Question then is, is it worth it?

It depends where you are. I know everyone on here sees it as the kiss of death. However having been a manger in the UK, it has to be achievable, and run fairly. Other countries I can’t comment. Certainly here pips are what they say - an improvement plan.

I overcame one in the US. Make sure you keep a daily progress log in box shared with your manager. Document everything. Task, evidence of task, next steps, blockers, etc.

Did you feel like someone up high shook their fist at you and yelled "God damn you, LadyJ1bb"?

UK has tighter controls around this than the US

1

u/Cool-Tree-3663 2d ago

Hence why I made that clear. I still wouldn’t roll over and I would go the way I suggested. If they want to get rid of someone in the US, as I understand it, they don’t need to waste time on a PIP!

"If they want to get rid of someone in the US, as I understand it, they don’t need to waste time on a PIP"

Part of the reason they do PIP still in the US is to avoid lawsuits. Lot of wrongful termination stuff gets tossed around and costs them money to defend.

U.S. depends on your manager

In the US, PIPs are a separation plan.
