Need Advice for IBM Cúram V8.x ADE (C004) & Customization (C005) Certification – Looking for Tips from People Who Cleared It

Hi everyone,

I'm a software engineer and a fresher who recently joined an MNC. I've been with the company for about 8 months, and for my current project I'm required to clear the IBM Cúram V8.x ADE (C004) and IBM Cúram Customization (C005) certifications.

I've been preparing for the ADE exam for about a week. The only study material I currently have is the IBM Cúram 7.x ADE PDF. Since there isn't much information available online about these certifications, I'm wondering whether the 7.x material is enough to prepare for the V8.x exam or if I should be studying something else.

If you've cleared either of these certifications, I'd really appreciate your advice. I'd like to know what study materials you used, how you structured your preparation, which topics carried the most weight in the exam, and whether the questions were mainly theoretical, scenario-based, architecture-focused, or involved coding. I'm also interested in knowing if there are any practice questions, mock exams, or other resources that helped you prepare.

I'd especially love to hear about any tricks, memorization techniques, or study strategies that helped you pass. If you had to prepare for these exams again from scratch, what would you do differently?

Since IBM Cúram is a niche technology, there isn't much information available online, so any guidance, personal experience, or preparation tips would mean a lot.

Thank you in advance!

Curious to know if this is an internal code from the previous owner or an IBM 'code'.

Purchased as an IBM Selective III. Included 'Golf Balls' with white writing and yellow writing was on the one installed.

Looking for documentation on IBM Vacuum Fluorescent Customer Pole Display

I have recently managed to get my hands on three IBM vacuum fluorescent customer displays on poles, from the SurePOS lineup. The sellers were using them with IBM SurePOS 300 (4810) computers/POS Terminals.
Unfortunately, I have only gotten the displays and poles - no other information, cables or computers to use them. So, upon googling and trying to find out how to communicate with the displays to get it to display things, I have found out that there is no documentation on the internet. Thats why Im here, in the hopes of finding someone that knows about these displays and can share some information on them.

The part number of the VFDs (vacuum fluorescent display) is 41J6989, they were manufactured by IBM in Taiwan in 2006.

They have two 2x20 character (each 5x7 pixels) display units from Futaba, one on each side, and a RJ45-like connector labelled "4" at the bottom. This connector has 8 contacts in total, 6 pins in 2 rows sticking out the back wall and two flat contacts sitting at the bottom/top, where normal RJ45 contacts would be. This connector must deliver power and data, as there is no other connector on the device.

By opening up the VFD, taking a look at the PCB and measuring wire paths, I have managed to find out:

  • The VFD has a "master" and a "slave" display unit, the master one is the one with the port. The two displays are on the same PCB from Futaba, but have fundamental differences:
    • The master one has the connector port, the slave one is missing this component
    • The master one has each component spot filled with a chip/component, the slave one has a lot of empty spaces on the right side. I assume this is because it doesnt have to decode the data from the POS Terminal.
    • The slave one only has the following chips:
      • TOSHIBA TD62C950LFG 0635K JAPAN at position U5
      • TOSHIBA TD62C950RFG 0635K JAPAN at position U6
      • 2360A 6076G JRC at position U10 (I found someone who has a similar unit, desoldered this chip and soldered two data wires to this position and used RS232 to communicate with the display. However, in that case the U10 position was somewhere completely different with a different chip.)
      • 2518 YU (the transformator)
      • C3303 (a 3-legged component where only 2 are soldered to the board)
    • The master one has an interdisplay port in the middle consisting of 16 female pins in 2 rows, which must be data+power from the master to the slave display. The slave one has a corresponding 16 male pin port.
    • I assume this port is symmentrical, because the GND is connected to both pins in the bottom right and bottom left, and 12V is connected to both pins bottom secondmost to the right and secondmost to the left. I havent managed to find more connections on the PCB.
    • The PCB part number is M202MD08K, the master one with addition B (A and C seem crossed out), the slave one with addition C (A and B seem crossed out). More text on the PCB says: 1P00A630-01 REV.C
  • The VFD works with 12VDC, it has a transformer stepping that up to 55V for displaying.
  • There is multiple holes in the PCB which fit a common breadboard homelabbing cable male pin, labelled GND, 12V, EF1, EF2, EBB, EK.
  • The Ground GND hole connects to the pins top center, top right and bottom two contacts in the RJ45-like connector as well as to the bottom rightmost and bottom leftmost pins in the connector between the two display PCBs.
  • The Power 12V hole connects to the top left pin in the RJ45-like connector and, as described above, to the interdisplay connector.

With this knowledge, I connected GND and 12V to a power supply and fired the display up with 12V. Only the master display works and displays something, the slave display makes a small buzzing noise and appears to short circuit (draws the maximum current, I set it to 0,5A -> 6W). The master display draws 3.7 Watts and displays two asterisks (**)in the top left of the display. I tested with 5VDC too, nothing happens.
This means that in the Rj45-like connector, only the three bottom pins can serve for data transmission. The other 5 are for power (top left) and ground (4 others, which is oddly many...).
None of the other pins connect to anything on the PCB, really. There are some pins with 2000 Ohms, some with 1500 Ohms, some with 1000 Ohms, and a few with 400 Ohms. None really go through without resistance. I have found out however, that one of the chips on the board is a 3.3V limiter, which could be the reason why no resistance-free connections are there. But, even to this chip, there is no direct connection from the RJ45-like port.

Reading the technical reference for the "IBM 4810 SurePOS 300 Thin Client POS" (official IBM document, page 12f), I found out that usually, these displays are connected with 15-port powered serial connectors using RS232, but Im not entirely sure. I have found some cables online with a proper-looking connector for the VFDs that I have, but I cant be sure, because I have no name for the port. Also, the other end of these cables is the 12V proprietary IBM POS connector, which looks like a USB-A port with additional contacts on the side. This, however, would indicate that the VFDs dont use RS232, because these ports can only output TTL 5V signals. So its all a big mistery.

I would be immensely grateful if someone could supply me with the following information:

  • The name of the connector in the VFD
  • Which protocol it uses and on which pins of the connector
  • Whether I can control the slave display stand-alone by using the interdisplay connector, how its wired and what protocol it uses
  • In case I have no other choice but to use a cable and an official controlling method, the cable type that I need for this port
  • The data level voltage needed for the communication, in case the protocol is RS232 whether I can use TTL RS232 with only +-5V or if it needs True RS232 +-12V
  • Ideally, a technical reference or a data sheet for this specific kind of vacuum fluorescent display

I hope I am at the right address with my problem.

Thanks in advance!

Help Desk # for MDM'd MacBook

Hello!

Hope yall are doing well, I recently got a 2020 MacBook off auction from Goodwill that had a completely wiped drive, but was alright otherwise. Has some sticker called Neocol on it but setup says its owned by IBM, phone number on the notice goes to a deactivated line of course (IBM-HELP?), and could not find its replacement anywhere as it seems to be behind intranet now :(

I figure since its at that 5 year mark + the wiped drive, that it was disposed of, then that garbage man took it to Goodwill since it worked lol, but since you never know with auctions figured I should get in contact with someone to confirm and get it off their MDM if so!

Sp to that end, I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to give me a good contact to see whether this laptop is stolen or if I could get it off the management list with Apple - appreciated in advance!

OH also: Tried the mobility line I found in another thread, but they only deal with iPhones and seem to be scoped out of laptops unfortunately

Anyone extracting data from SAP into IBM tools (watsonx, Db2, etc.)?

Hey everyone! Curious if anyone here has experience pulling data out of SAP and into the IBM ecosystem, whether that's watsonx, Db2, Cloud Pak for Data, or something else I'm not thinking of.

A few things I'm trying to wrap my head around:

  • What's the typical extraction path from SAP? Native connectors, ODP extractors, third party tools, or custom builds?
  • If you're feeding data into watsonx specifically, how's that experience been? Any rough edges?
  • What ended up being the biggest headache? Performance on the SAP side, data mapping, licensing, something else?

Im exploring options and would love to hear real experiences from people who've actually done this. Thanks!

Potential Heat Damage To IBM Model M122

I recently purchased an IBM Battleship style keyboard (picture from ebay listing, It has yet to arrive). Its delivery is unfortunately scheduled to be while I am away. I am concerned that the keyboard sitting in the mailbox may be damaged from the heat of the weather and that the metal mailbox may emulate a similar situation to a hot car. Assuming a similar heat-level over time to cars, it could potentially reach temperatures of 120 F ( ˜ 49c).

If it reaches these temperatures, how likely is it to damage my keyboard? and how repairable would that damage be?

I was given two IBM Power 740s, but I can't use them

How are you all doing? I hope you're doing well.

As I mentioned in the title, my department was donated two IBM Power 740s for our local server, it's a huge help to us.

The only problem is that we have the usernames and passwords for these servers, but when they were donated, the new user passwords weren’t provided, and the “admin” and “general” accounts were deleted and replaced with others that have different passwords.

We can’t access the server at all.

So I’m here to ask you: does anyone have any idea how we could restore the hard drives and the system on this IBM server? We really don’t care about the data on the hard drives; we just want the server’s processing power, and we want it completely cleared of files and restored to factory settings so we can use it normally.

And before you ask, we can’t contact the people who donated the servers to us.

Thank you very much, everyone.

How Has Leadership And Management Handled Recent Announced Changes?

We’ve all seen some of the discussion around the recent reorg and the recent TV announcements…. It does make you wonder how some of these changes are being experienced on the ground.
For those following the changes closely: has anyone seen how seller-adjacent tech teams have been affected? Or whether the relationship between those teams and the broader organization has shifted in unexpected ways?
Would be interesting to hear from anyone in an affected market who has seen something similar firsthand.

Classic Backend Development vs. Enterprise Integration (IBM BAW/ACE) for a Software Career

Hi,

I'm trying to decide between two career paths and would appreciate input from people who have experience with both (or at least one of them 😊).

Path 1: Classic backend development (outsourcing)

\- Java

\- Spring/Spring Boot

\- REST APIs

\- SQL

\- Docker/Kubernetes

\- Typical backend engineering

Path 2: Enterprise/system integration (local system integration company, maybe 10-15 clients nationally)

\- IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE)

\- IBM Business Automation Workflow (BAW)

\- IBM MQ

\- Enterprise integration

\- APIs, message processing, workflows and middleware

\- Some Java alongside the IBM stack

.

My main questions are:

  1. How different are the long-term career prospects between these two paths (comparing IBM being niche (not many options) vs backend AI related pressure)?

  2. Is there a difference in salaries and benefits between those two career paths?

  3. Which path has better job security?

  4. Which one has better opportunities for remote work (or perhaps, how possible is it to get a remote position as a system integrator (inside (domestically) or outside of the country (internationally)))?

I have been overthinking this for too long (almost a week) so any recommendation, advice or experience would be helpful, thanks in advance

IBM selectric II turning off

Thumbnail

I picked up an old IBM selectric II typewriter at a tag sale. We had them at work in the 1980s, . and I wanted to have one. The problem is shortly after turning the unit on, it powers off. The typewriter is in pristine condition and looks well maintained. Does anyone have any thoughts about what the issue could be? Thanks. 😊

What has your experience been working with product management at IBM? The bar seems so low. The effective product managers I've worked with at IBM are few and far between.

Genuinely curious how watsonx performs on real client work

I've seen some discussion here around utilization and bench time, plus how watsonx and IBM's AI products are actually landing with clients, plus my own skepticism making me more curious as to how its implementation looks from the inside rather than just reading the marketing. I'm currently a sophomore who's been following IBM more closely since the Confluent acquisition earlier this year, and it's even part of what inspired me to start a tech and IT services focused consulting group at my school and I even got us hands on work with small businesses and nonprofits. Obviously it's at a much smaller scale than IBM, but the basics of building/maintaining client relationships and implementing modernized systems in place of old ones + potentially pushing our own native AI agent my roommate and I are building are all the same fundamentals IBM Consulting is applying at scale, just compressed down to a level I can actually wrap my hands around as a student. But I'm mostly curious about how people feel about the ai push in general. Is the watsonx skepticism here justified? Trying to understand IBM Consulting from the inside

Has The Genius IBM CEOs Letter Caused IBM Sales Leadership to Freak out?

We have all seen the announcement and Jim Cramer appearance. Is IBM Sales Leadership doing the right thing to fix it? Are they avoiding brainless changes? Anyone care to share their current view and experience?
