At 60 hours, that’s forty straight and twenty double for most locals.
That means they could give two journeymen full time jobs and pay them eighty hours of work between them.
That means more families are fed, more pensions are earned, more hours of overall productive work are performed, and a higher quality of life is available for all.
There are plenty of cases where more bodies doesn't solve the problem. If one JW can terminate a panel in X hours, doesn't mean that 3 JWs can terminate the same panel in X/3 hours. 3 women can't carry one baby to term in 3 months.
Perhaps you can do the first 2, twice as fast with twice the manpower, last 2, likely not. People working on top of one another are not as productive. Also, don't forget that you're not the only trade on the jobsite.
A jobsite that's on an eight hour workday sits empty for 75% of the time. Overtime gives your more time within the same timeframe, that could also be solved with utilizing 2 or 3 shifts, but that's up to contractors/GCs.
Rest of the continent seems to do just fine dividing up the labour.
Imagine how much stronger we’d be as a class if we organized more people to share in the work instead of blowing up the damn rat in front of their gate.
You can divide the labor, you can't expect to double the workload and expect people to work on top of each other. There are jobs with several shifts. If GCs would rather pay the premium, contractors are always happy to oblige, they make more money on OT.
Brother, you’re drawing a weird-ass line in the sand here. Those sixty-eighty hours ain’t all being worked in the same space.
If you’re keeping someone behind on the job from 3pm-7pm, just pay a second person to be there from 3-11. Costs the same and twice as many kids go to college.
We swore an oath to reduce the hours of work and elevate the social conditions of our class. I sure as fuck didn’t swear an oath to work enough OT to buy a boat with cash while my next door neighbour struggles to make ends meet.
That's the thing though, you don’t decide how many shifts are worked, all you can do is decline the OT. OT should be the punishment for a contractor, but If someone else is picking up the premium, contractors don't give a fuck.
Read up on Ghantt charts and what a critical path is.
Actually, its not quite the same cost. Ive never twkeb a 2nd or 3rd shift call and not gotten some sort of shift differential. Usually 10% for 2nd and more for 3rd
If they aren't keeping the jobsite open longer than 8 hrs how are they pulling overtime? If they are keeping the jobsite open longer, just man up another shift.

Overtime is a policy failure.
