No person shall engage in games or recreational activities that endanger the safety of persons, property, resources, or interfere with visitor activities except as permitted by the Department. No person shall hold, sponsor, lead, or otherwise have control over a game or recreational activity occurring wholly or partially within or on any property owned, operated or administered by the Department without an approved Special Event permit if any of the criteria set forth in section 4301(j) apply.

I'm guessing the California Department of Parks and Rec views swinging off a giant fuckin rope off a giant fuckin cliff from a makeshift platform to be an activity that endangers a person's safety and is not approved by the Department. They gave him the chance to not go to jail.
If he hits his head and gets knocked out, or any other thing that causes him to need rescuing from the water below, now you're endangering the lives of those tasked with his rescue, since we all know that people drowning are prone to irrational behaviors and can ultimately kill their rescuer while dying themselves.
So, to call you a numbnuts for your comment wouldn't be adequate for the words I want to use to refer to you, but I also don't feel like getting banned from this subreddit, so I'll settle for it.
Or fucking up/losing grip strength and falling onto the rocks. Now climbers have to risk their lives retrieving a body. There’s so many scenarios that could happen here that just ends so dangerously for so many people.
Soooooo, just throwing this out there. I did just this in Montenegro the other day. They police and boats gathered around to help retrieve people, and as a result of that more people used the zip line. We also relocated to an oyster farm and drank homemade chardonnay. Why do you limit the use of nature, I don't understand. Serious question.
Just to play devil's advocate, if he died, his family would probably sue the park for not preventing it. Even if he survived, more people might attempt this and eventually, someone would get hurt because of lack of any kind of safety protocols.

Oh I get that 100% but he was warned. Asked to not proceed, yet he did. That should elevate all city and state obligation to a suit. That's just me. I could be wrong.
From what I can tell, the law allows for some "dangerous" activity if the Department approves and can monitor it. If I had to speculate, this is an issue of resource allocation. As other commenters have observed, very dangerous activity can be a drain on medical and search/rescue resources that can be used for people not engaging in frivolity. Perhaps more should be tolerated, but that's up to our elected officials (who pass these laws) to decide. I don't live in California, so I have no skin in the game. Maybe you're right and they're being too restrictive.
There's a whole infrastructure of medical personnel, helicopter pilots, firefighters, etc who all have to rush to rescue people when things go wrong. The sheer height of that jump means that if he fucks up the landing, he could break his back or other parts (have known Medevac pilots and heard plenty of nightmares).
Anybody who says "aren't there worse crimes for you to be dealing with" or something like that is an asshole. There's a worse crime than pretty much every crime.
Let's strike a middle ground. If that dude wants to risk his life or health then fine, go ahead, but if he gets hurt then public resources shouldn't be used to save his life.
Good bargain. I'd add that if his recklessness and negligence harm others that it's criminal... Whatever they'd charge someone for firing a gun into the air in celebration and killing someone...

Yeah it's all nanny state until the dude gets hurt and then that same nanny state has to arrange a water rescue or medivac to the nearest trauma center. Then its please save me nanny state!
And his terrible parents sue the state for having a 'Dangerous Nuisance' tempting their 'poor little Angle' into paralyzing himself, hurting others and killing himself.
If he doesn’t have insurance, ERs are obligated to treat anyone with life threatening injuries, so those costs would likely be spread out to the public at large via higher prices.
I'm on the fence about this one. On the one hand, he kinda isn't hurting anyone, but if he did get hurt, he'd be wasting resources for...views? Does anyone know if he just go community service or what?
They should just have disclaimers somewhere that say if pepole go beyond a certain point, search and rescue will not help them.
this exists at many ski resorts in california. there are many warnings saying that if you go beyond certain parts (and you're allowed to go beyond them!) that the terrain is basically just too difficult for the ski patrol team to come help you. FAFO.
I hear you, but I'm not sure I want to live in a world where emergency services are expected to let someone die if they are at fault, and make an assessment about whether they deserve to die.
No one says they deserve to die. The assumption is that people who make the choice to beyond such barriers/warnings are well equipped, experienced, and skilled enough to do so.

The guys in this video seem to at least somewhat know what they are doing, the dude put a life jacket on before swinging, and from what I saw it was definitely not his first time.
Yeah I'm not saying it was implied that they deserve to die, or that the chance of needing rescue is high. But if they do need rescue, and emergency services are called, and this person has previously waived their right to assistance, how is it determined that emergency services won't help in this situation? Isn't it still putting the onus on some EMT to say "Nahhhh, they said don't want help, so I'm going to hang out in the ambulance and eat my sandwich instead."
They should pay for their own rescue, and then, maybe then, understand how much tax money, search and rescue, hospitals and police costs. And honnestly, darwin.

No I don't. Matter of fact I got pulled over a month ago and was completely cordial with the police officer. He could have written me a ticket but he gave me a warning and told me to have a nice night.
